Whoops. Sorry to you and @gurn. I had a brain fart while posting about WW2 mustard gas. I accidentally typed WW2 instead of WW1. What I was trying to infer without actually pointing it out, was that the Allied powers had already committed a war crime by having and producing the gas 20 years after it was banned by treaty. They were fully ready and prepared to use it on the Axis soldiers as well.
Imagine if Germany had used it to stop the soldiers on Normandy on D-Day when they began to break the German lines. The US would have had to nuke Germany instead of, or right along with, Japan.
But for the grace of God, WW2 could have been much more horrific than it actually was.

I'm no historian, but I was just reading up on Otto Ambros, heard of him?

Also don't forget that Hitler went temporarily blind after getting gassed in WW1. He knew first hand that a chemical war would have returned to him soldiers that would be handicapped for life. The Nazi's preferred to murder the vulnerable parts of their population rather than help them. The practice of Eugenics is a b*tch that way.
With the technological leaps that the Nazis made in such a short time, I think they would have used something much worse and much more thorough and effective than mustard gas, especially if they had decided to plan it before the war. Don't forget that they had already invented and used things like Zyklon B as a pesticide. That came about as a byproduct of their chemical warfare studies from the WW1 days.
It's the Allies that would have initially had to count on thigh quantities of mustard gas and then nuclear bombs if Germany had ever gotten the upper hand.
