Yes, yes it was. The difference was that teams weren't as familiar with the Canucks breakout (or lack there of) so the Canucks spent more time in the O zone. Now with the mini-series schedule teams have more time to make adjustments and they've all got the book on the Canucks as Green has been doing the EXACT same thing every game for 4 years. Now you're noticing the poor defensive system more because the team is playing the whole game in their own end.

Leivo wasn't even good enough to break the lineup when he played for TO. He is a glorified AHL'er. If he was on the ice tonight it would have made no difference in the outcome. Zero. Toffolli played what, 12 games for us last year? Did he really become the heart and soul of this team in 12 games? They just can't win without him? Stech was a less skilled version of Hughes. He likes to pinch and get in on the offense but wasn't great defensively. When Hughes came along he became redundant. The Canucks ARE missing Tanev and Markstrom. Tanev for his responsible play in his own end and shot blocks. Markstrom because he had the ability to steal games and kept us in it every night. Demko clearly isn't ready and Holtby looks average so far at best. What this team needs to do now is make adjustments to their system to compensate. They need to abandon their passive 5 man box defensive structure and be more aggressive to limit the scoring chances on their average goal tenders. Will Green do it? Sadly, no. If you want to see this team win again that will require a new coaching staff with fresh insights.

Nah, they just need a new coach. Coaches have a shelf life and Greens gone stale. His systems don't work against aggressive teams and the leauge has figured it out. We'll continue to be basement dwellers until Green et al are replaced. I just hope it happens before Petterson, Hughes, Miller, and Boeser decide to walk.

Travis Green’s future (& coaching system)

Hi Franny, Its me Trevor. I told you to fire Green years ago and instead you fired me! Hate to say I told you so! If I was still President of Hockey Operations we'd have a Cup by now. Big mistake bud. -
Keep dreaming bud. I can already hear the post game; "I thought we played well. They're a heavy team. We just didn't get the bounces. Its hockey, thats how it goes sometimes." He didn't make any changes during the VGK series last year when our system completely failed against their aggressive forechecking so you can rest assured he won't be changing anything up against MTL tomorrow. Just keep doing the same thing and expect different results seems to be his motto.

Sure. It took me about 30 seconds to find an example. Jan 23, 2016 the Canucks played in Pittsburgh, flew all the way back to play 1 game in Vancouver, then reboarded the plane and flew back east to Columbus. Multiply that by 32 teams with similar schedules and that's a whole lot of unnecessary travel.

Personally I like the new format of less travel and playing mini-series against the same teams. I actually suggested something along the same lines years ago, long before COVID, to help combat climate change. Flying 5,000kms to play 1 game then flying all the way back is just silly. Its hard on the players, a waste of money, and has a terrible environmental impact.

I agree. I'm not even sure where Jake entered the conversation as this is a PGT and he wasn't even in the line up. I was responding to the assertion that he wasn't developed right and that's why he is where he is today. He's 24 now. Its time for him to figure it out, or not. People have to deal with all sorts of adversity in life. Broken homes, abuse, neglect. Some rise to the occasion, overcome their trauma, and go on to be successful while others use it as an excuse and fall into a downward spiral. Its about attitude, mental strength, and perseverance. You either have it or you don't. I've been an ardent JV supporter since day 1 and would love to see him blossom into the power forward he could be. Maybe he'll be a late bloomer like Alex Burrows or maybe it won't ever happen at all, but I wish him all the best either way.

Virtanen is 24 years old. His time of being coddled is over. He's his own man now and it's time for him to sink or swim. It appears to me that he lacks the inner drive to take his game to the next level (unlike a much younger Petterson or Hughes) and that isn't something that you can coach into a player. He either has it or he doesn't. What a delight Hoglander has been to watch. He is yet another great draft pick for our club. If he continues playing with the same veracity all year he could be in the running for the Calder. We're shaping up to be one hell of a team, all we're missing now is a coaching staff that is capable of driving us to the next level.

Green and his assistants - not the men for this job

Exactly. In a post game after a win Scotty Bowman would say something like "we did some things right but there are still some things we need to work on." Otoh, Green after a 5 game losing streak; " I thought we played well." Big difference between a HOF coach and someone who lacks the fortitude to take a team to the next level. -

Ultimately, that falls on the shoulders of the head coach. He's the "head" coach. If his subordinates aren't up to snuff he needs to fix that. -

Hockey is a game of probability. The more shots you give up the higher the chance you will be scored on. Not all goals are from Grade A chances in the slot. Often shots from the outside ricochet and end up in the back of the net. Thats why the age old mantra that its never a bad idea to throw it at the net is still a colloquial saying. When you give up 30-40 shots per game you will be scored on more often than you score. Its just math. The law of averages. -

Same system as the last 4 seasons. Despite all the personnel turnover over that span all the same fundamental issues are still there. Remember when folks were saying Gudbranson and Pouliot were the problem? Well they're gone now and we still have the same issues. Personnel isn't the issue. Its the system they're playing. We could have 1980s Paul Coffee and Al Mcinnis and still get out shot and hemmed in our own end every night playing Greens system. -

Lol. I hope you're trolling because this comment is absurd. Five or six 30 goal scorers and playing .500 hockey is Green working miracles? 31 other teams in the league would kill for that much offensive talent in the line up and do much more with much less by playing a sound team game based on solid O and D systems. -

I've been saying this for 3 seasons now. The only reason Green has anywhere near a .500 record as head coach is due to the amazing draft picks Benning has brought in and the excellent work of Markstrom between the pipes. With an "average " lineup Green's coaching skills would see us dwelling in the basement every season.
