  1. Chicoutimi wins Game 2 in double overtime! Zhukenov with the assist on the winner by Nicolas Roy, his third assist on three goals tonight, 3-2 the final... that was a great game. The series is tied up 1-1, and Zhukenov's up to 5-14-19 in 13 playoff games now. Game 3 is Tuesday at 4:30 pst. Great bounce back effort from the Sagueneens after they were dominated in Game 1. Zhukenov's line with Roy and Ratelle got a ton of ice time in both overtimes... there was a shift late in the first OT where they were cycling in the offensive zone, forced a faceoff, and stayed out for the draw even though they'd already been on the ice for ~45 seconds. Billia (Chicoutimi's goalie) was outstanding, took a stick to the throat area and kept playing, turning aside chance after chance. The winner was a nifty pass by Zhukenov from the left circle down to Roy in front of the net who managed to get room in front and pivot to his forehand for the goal. Side note, Veleno is an absolute horse. Gonna be real interesting to see where he takes his game in his draft year next season.
  2. Charlottetown loses 5-4 in Game 2, their first playoff loss, and the series is tied 1-1. No points for Brisebois in the loss.
  3. Third period... Lapalme from Chicoutimi also gets tossed from the game after a heavy hit from behind on Bourque, that makes two ejections for the Sagueneens now. The likelihood of this turning into a short series is definitely going to grow if they get a couple of suspensions out of this, plus Rubtsov is already out with an injury so they can't afford to weaken their depth even further. Chabot with a slick end to end rush that nearly ends with a goal. He's one hell of a prospect. Now a spirited scrap... Noel (the Saint John player) starts amping up the crowd with his free hand in the middle of the fight and then goes back to throwing punches. He gets tossed from the game as well. 9:30 left but this one feels pretty much over, not a lot happening in the way of chances. 1:20 left and Zhukenov gets hit from behind along the boards by Ward, but thankfully bounces right back up, no penalty on the play. That's it, 4-1 the final. Chicoutimi never really threatened at all in the game; Zhukenov had two shots on goal but wasn't especially noticeable or dangerous. The same could be said for the whole Sagueneens team as Saint John absolutely stifled them all game long. Game 2 is tomorrow at 3:00 pst.
  4. Charlottetown wins 3-0 in Game 1 and leads their third round series 1-0 over Blainsville-Boisbriand; no points for Brisebois in the win. Game 2 is tomorrow at 3:00 pst.
  5. Second period... Chicoutimi got a fourth powerplay early in the first, and it was easily their best so far. Zhukenov pulled back to play the left point and did a good job of distributing the puck for a couple of scoring chances, most notably to Klima at the left circle for some one timers, but with no luck. Then Bourque (the penalized player) got sprung for a breakaway out of the box to open the scoring for Saint John. 1-0. Saint John goes up 2-0 after a review... the referee clearly blew the whistle before the puck went in but somehow it gets called a good goal. I mean, it was definitely a clean goal (the puck was loose) but usually the intent to blow the whistle means it stays waved off. Bad break for the Sagueneens. Now 3-0. Highmore and Mathieu Joseph with the give and go that allows Joseph to sneak away from coverage and shoot it top corner for the goal. The better team is pulling away now. Ratelle just absolutely blindsided Joseph with a dirty hit to the head, popped his helmet off and everything. A scrum ensues, Zhukenov getting into it with Highmore... Luckily Joseph appears to be okay, but this could turn into an ugly game. Chicoutimi dodges a bullet as Saint John can't score on the powerplay after; Brendan Hamelin takes Ratelle's spot on Zhukenov's line. Roy scores to make it 3-1! Allard takes the point shot with Zhukenov and Roy screening in front and Roy manages to scoop in the rebound on his backhand. Super important goal against the run of play with the period winding down. Scratch that. Julien Gauthier scores to make it 4-1 with 16 seconds left with a soft floater from near the left point. That's the end of the second, shots are 32-14 for Saint John and this one looks out of reach for Chicoutimi.
  6. No score at the end of the first, although Saint John dominated the period. Chicoutimi had three powerplays, the first two of which were absolutely terrible and reminded me of watching the Canucks. Saint John has a real aggressive penalty kill and kept forcing Chicoutimi to fumble pucks and make bad passes to nobody; the third one was alright though, and they managed to get set up and have some decent puck control. Zhukenov sets up as the right shot at the left circle; on his line with Roy and Ratelle he plays the role of the smaller skill guy who waits near the battles for the puck to come loose as Roy and Ratelle muck it out. Roy in particular looks like a giant compared to all the skinny junior kids around him. Thomas Chabot was everywhere for Saint John and looks dominant; he took an inadvertent hit to the head from Roy but returned shortly after. Joe Veleno has also been noticeable. I don't see this series lasting very long just based on the sheer depth that Saint John has but its still even, for now at least.
  7. Zhukenov and Chicoutimi are underway vs the league-best Saint John Sea Dogs in Game 1... His linemates on the top unit are Nicolas Roy (Carolina prospect) and Joey Ratelle, an overager. No score early in the first but Saint John certainly looks like the better, deeper team so far.
  8. Interestingly, the player who scored the OT winner (Olivier Galipeau) was an invite to development camp and Young Stars last season. He's seen a bump in his totals from last year and seems to be on the scoresheet every time I check the Chicoutimi boxscores... I wonder if he might be a guy the Canucks look at inviting again this year. We're pretty well stocked with middling defense prospects though.
  9. I wish the OHL kept track of time on ice, it seemed like Juolevi was out there almost every second shift in the third period and overtime. Would be curious to see what his final total was.
  10. Ah well. The way this one was going, you kinda knew it was coming... good on Parsons to keep the Knights in it for that long.
  11. Chicoutimi completes the comeback and wins the series! Zhukenov dishes to Galipeau for the winner in overtime, 4-3 the final in the game and the series. 5-11-16 in 11 playoff games so far for Zhukenov. Chicoutimi will advance to play the undefeated Saint John Sea Dogs in the league semifinals.
  12. Juolevi's not the only Canucks prospect going to overtime in Game 7... Chicoutimi and Rouyn-Noranda are tied 3-3 after Chicoutimi was down 3-1 in the third period.
  13. Actually, I remember seeing similar things in the last few months this year in the NHL... The Knights definitely remind me of the Canucks in this one, just getting swarmed and not able to push back very much against a superior team. They're amazingly lucky to be in this game at all.
  14. Good goal, this one's going to OT all tied up at 4-4 despite the vast difference in play... somehow, the Knights just keep surviving. Juolevi grabs an assist on the tying goal, his second of the game. Shots are 56-27 for Erie.
  15. Knights appeared to have tied it, looks like Stephens chipped it in off of a scramble in front... being reviewed though. Fingers crossed.
  16. Juolevi gets belted face first into the boards behind his own net, and thankfully appears to be okay... Knights getting a PP with 1:25 left. Way to take one for the team?
  17. Debrincat with a snipe off the faceoff makes it 4-3 Erie with 3:30 to play in third...
  18. Cirelli ties the game 3-3 on a 2-on-1 after Juolevi had the puck cleared past him at the Erie blueline and got caught. Just under 15 minutes to go.
  19. He definitely looks legit, which is lucky for them since they passed on Demko for Mason McDonald. I can only imagine the frustration around here if the reverse had happened...
  20. Still 3-2 for London after two periods - the Knights got absolutely dominated that period but Parsons has been a sponge in goal, just absorbing everything the Otters threw at him in that period. The shots are 39-21 for Erie so far and they were 21-9 in that frame... Erie is clearly the superior team but goaltending has been the difference in this series and tonight is no different, with the Knights being opportunistic enough to keep pace.
  21. Darren Raddysh scores with 0.2 seconds left in the first period with a laser from the right faceoff circle... what a shot. The Otters won a puck battle behind the net and Raddysh got the puck without a lot of space to shoot, I think it was Macdonald who was right in front of him. 3-2 at the end of the first.
  22. The Knights are up 3-1 in the first period right now with 5:31 to play and have chased Timpano out of the Otters' net. Juolevi has an assist on the first goal, a powerplay marker where he passed it down to Cliff Pu at the side who fed it out to Kuokkanen in front of the net for the goal. He did get a minus on the Erie goal, but it was more Mete's fault than his; Juolevi had his man covered near the left side of the ice and Mete came over to help, leaving Lodnia wide open in front of the net to score when the puck squeaked out to him.
  23. Chicoutimi's heading to a Game 7 after getting blown out 9-2 in Game 6 today. No points for Zhukenov in the loss, Game 7 is tomorrow at 4:00 pst.
  24. Its amazing how deep they are, year after year... even losing that entire dynamic first line from last year they still have a chance to go to the conference finals. Parsons is outstanding. (And then out here, we have the Giants... )
  25. Knights win it in OT and force a Game 7! 2-1, Stephens with the winner. Game 7 goes Tuesday at 4:00 pst.
