  1. Let's change their name next year to Toronto Plays No "D".
  2. It's a valid point. Nicholas Roy is probably in the same mold as Sutter, with good speed, size and faceoff ability. Having him to match up against Tuch's line would probably help since this VGK 3rd line has some offensive ability. Gaudette on the wing could probably provide the offensive output and enable him to play on the 2nd PP without giving up EV puck possession. Maybe Coach sees some upside in Gaudette still? IDK
  3. Yeah I think it would be Bozak and Alex Steen to be moved (they had him on 4th line role despite his big price tag).
  4. No Game on Thursday without him and his goal and assist.
  5. Agreed with the above, it's probably the best we can ask for in terms of a Marky deal. While he's been the MVP without question, there's only 1 crease to guard and if Demko can do so with the same effectiveness for stretches, and at a fraction of the price, then it should be no question that the team should be looking to whittle down say a million dollars and a couple years off of the next contract, since goalies tend to get supplanted pretty quickly to fulfill holes in other positions (e.g. Bob replaced by Korpisalo, Holtby by Samsonov, Rinne by Saros, even Murray by Jarry despite Matt being young and not that expensive). If the team wants to solidify their back end with their cap space I could see them possibly walk from both Toffoli and Marky and run with Demko, and spend on better defensemen. Not saying I don't appreciate Marky's play and growth but it's the nature of the business esp. if he won't budge on his asking price.
  6. I think players of his build normally do last pretty long as minute munchers, even if the offense fades a bit (could see him being a Ryan Suter/ Shea Weber/ Drew Doughty instead of an offense first guy like Erik Karlsson and so warrant the contract, as long as it's like 5-7 years and not like 10; also since he's got offense unlike Seabrook who's defense first, he probably wouldn't tail off and so could be worth it?).
  7. I'd dump Jordie to sign Bogosian for $1.5 million, esp. if the team can acquire a pick and gain cap space. Liked the quick move he made in this playoff against Boston. Also, if Tanev and or Stecher go, I'd go for Hamonic/ Gudas (if Chris goes) and Kevan Miller at the same $2.5 million (if Stecher goes for $3). No thanks to any of the wingers in the OP though, we'd filled to the brim with wings.
  8. Title should be "Green is smart not to use the backup goalie". Who in their right mind would not start a red-hot, All-Star goalie who's made the most saves this post-season and is essentially the duct tape holding an at occasionally leaking defense together? It's exactly in the playoffs that any team or athlete puts their best guys forward. We also don't have the luxury of a champion like Marc Andre Fleury as our backup to spot Lehner for a night. Lastly, surprised you see that any of those last 3 goals were his fault (tipped off Motte's stick, hit Pacioretty's skate in a fluke play and close-in jam play due to Myers' missed assignment). Even the first two couldn't entirely be faulted against him if you choose to do so (missed block by Motte which goes five hole as Markstrom saw it last minute, and odd man rush where Stephenson roofs it off a perfect pass past a lunging Markstrom).
  9. Yeah some do but I'm not close to being on that list of bashers. Also, being tight on cap space still sucks when there's a chance key free agents are lost or walk for nothing if there's not enough money.
  10. https://www.tsn.ca/13-nhl-teams-will-carry-salary-cap-overages-into-next-season-1.1517304 Yes, Vancouver is one of these at $1.7 million ($850k for each of Quinn and Pete, though it could go up to $3.7 million if they go all the way and Pete wins the Hart). I'm honestly not the most familiar with this (it also sounds new given how Covid shortened the season according to the article), but I gather that the Canucks are down to $15.38 million in cap space? ($81.5 - $64.42 - $1.7). Correct me if I'm wrong but if this is the case it's a tough time for this to happen given the RFA's and big 3 UFA's (could defer to the season after but that's when the big bucks are handed out to EP and Quinn... looks like possible tough choices ahead for any of the 12 teams with cap issues?)
  11. Honestly part of me is wary that we become like the Sharks, e.g. if Markstrom becomes a mere mortal again or gets injured after his contract such that the team falters, when we know that he's the guy keeping us in this playoffs' games. Losing that 1st might get us pretty screwed if the guns stop firing or the back end doesn't hold up as it should, plus agreed with others' comments about good teams retaining their 1st's to keep stocked up on youth.
  12. I hope we can Patrick White/ Christian Ehrhoff them. News reports project the Lightning needing to fork up around $5 million per for each of Cirelli, Sergachev and Cernak (they have $76.16 million committed, cap is $81.5). Wonder if we could package Stecher's rights (say his next contract lands at around $3 million per, which still shaves off a couple million dollars) and a lesser pick? Troy's a legit top-6 D-man, whereas who knows if Cernak pulls a William Nylander and refuses to sign for cheap? All the other Lightning stars earn like $8 to $9 million and even role players make $4 to $5 so maybe he feels justified to not get discounted. That or we flip Stecher elsewhere, then use that asset and e.g. Lind to get Erik (we'll survive given our RW depth)
  13. Disagree, especially in the modern league we'll need guys like him. Depending on how things go with Stecher and Tanev, Benn may have to bump to right-side to play bottom pair? He's looked solid enough this playoffs and if we don't trade him he's costing enough to warrant consideration for more regular ice time given the flat cap and a slight money crunch. Teams will also always look for sh*t disturbers like him though, guys to throw opponents off their game with speed and physicality esp. in the playoffs. Also wouldn't expect Rathbone to come in to the big leagues so quickly, and even if he does, they'd still need big guys beside him, Quinn and Olli (also have to see how durable Juolevi will be after so many injuries - maybe they go 1/2 games him against more skilled guys, 1/2 games Boro against more physical opponents).
  14. Rather not have him as a full-time top 4 D-man... also could just have him replace Fantenberg who's UFA anyways
  15. Sign and trade? Start a bidding war between the Oil and Leafs (Bouchard + 1st from the Oil, Hyman/ Hallander/ 1st from Leafs) *whoever gets him ends up with the 1st overall anyways
  16. Great. Now they can't afford Pete or Hughes then
  17. Bean/ Forsling/ McKeown? Playoffs has expanded roster (and they might next season depending on Covid)
  18. Good luck with that. Reimer did well as the backup, and don't they have a guy in the minors? Meanwhile, Bean's a 1st rounder, Slavin and Pesce were two of the more underrated D, and they got Skjei for a 1st, and he's a part of their top 4, no?
  19. OP must be a leafs fan. Doesn't help the other two teams at all like @mll said.
  20. Interesting discussion. Off the top of my head I think Chara. Marleau's probably the first to go given how his contract has reached albatross status (had to be dumped to Carolina with a sweetener and I think that's pretty indicative of a fading career). Thornton is pretty durable and could probably go the Spezza route, playing lower down in the lineup and could probably be a PP assist specialist (set him up in Buffalo and I think he'd be good to go since they have all their talent that they could stack around him, maybe he could even help Skinner stay consistent like he did with Cheechoo that one year) but Chara's sheer intimidation as the biggest player ever in the league and the fact that he knows when to pick his spots would help him retain a shutdown and leadership role. He still skated more than 20 minutes this season on Boston's top pair.
  21. What other movies of his are good? I only heard of 42 before (not a big movie person)
  22. Can't believe you forgot Marky Mark, and did you already say Markstrom? FR though, agreed with other posters, ride the hot hand til he gets tired or loses focus (e.g. in the Wild game when he was letting in bad-angled shots) then play Demko. If Thatcher then goes on to earn starts and steals games then all the more better, we might have another #1 goalie on our hands. Til then, it's still Marky's team.
  23. Then hopefully Carolina sells them back on defensive ace Jake Gardiner, that'll be the day
  24. I think this team is in the early stages of acquiring a Blackhawks-type critical mass, both in roster guys and young guns on ELC's. Eventually, just like Chicago's been doing, it'll revolve around Hughes ($8-10), Pete ($8-$10), Bo ($5.5) and I'd also include Miller ($5.25) and Markstrom ($6 mil) (or Demko if they're so trusting in him in the near future, as the expansion could change things and as he matures). That's equivalent to Keith, Kane, Toews, Saad and Crawford in the current regime. As mentioned, it'll be flipping luxury veteran wings and secondary guys out for picks, developing top end guys on ELC's and inserting them into the lineup (eventually, hopefully Hoglander/ Podkolzin/ Lind/ Juolevi/ Gadjovich? for Pearson/ Toffoli/ Roussel/ Edler/ Loui). For shipping out vets like Sutter, Loui, Roussel, Beagle and Sven, would probably take some combination of sweeteners and finding teams that need to patch gaps (e.g. Loui to Ottawa to help cheapo Melnyk reach the cap, and maybe Sutter and Virtanen to Buffalo to provide two-way depth for someone like Colin Miller). Regardless of how it happens, I just trust Benning that he can make it happen, and it should be exciting times ahead.
