  1. Looks pretty tough to tell; while his upper body looked like it was bracing to hit the boards his right foot did come up a couple seconds before, overall it looks like it was part of a pivoting motion as his foot naturally also turned in the air as he tried to both turn to chase Mark, and catch himself on the boards at the same time. If it was intentional though I doubt Matt would've skated over as they were bringing Mark to the bench, and not sure if villains would have such a frustrated body language reaction like "eff this, let's just get it over with" as he just flipped his glove off and went to fight Wheeler. For all the hate he gets and the villainous reputation, I'm not sure this is one of those moments that warrants it.
  2. Tough to gauge what to want for this year. As much as it's a deep draft and there's a chance we end up with #1, I can't say I'm certain about how deep this draft actually is and whether there would be impact pieces available if we don't get that top pick (e.g. we'd probably luck out if we found another Boeser-level prospect in the mid-10's to 20's if we advance in the PO's, esp. with Brackett now gone). Definitely glass half full for current player development through the playoff grind, half full (full-full if we get #1), but if it's a mid-late 1st and BPA isn't that good I wonder if entertaining the option of flipping the pick to move Loui should be considered (that'd be a half-full for me).
  3. I agree with this list, except the Hawks gave us some problems (not so much because their offense is still that elite but our D-group was sloppy). The rest I think we stand a good chance against (as long as we don't get disorganized against more system-based teams like the Coyotes/ Wild)
  4. I for one don't mind if Captain Bo takes on the top defensive duties so Pete can get top offensive responsibility. Seems like most championship winning teams can have an offense-defense tandem for the top two centers (Kopitar/ Carter, Krejci/ Bergeron, Getzlaf/ Kesler, O'Reilly/ B. Schenn), as a workable alternative to two offense-first guys (Kuznetsov/ Backstrom, Sid/ Geno). Given Gaudette's development he can probably become an offensive 3rd line center to help Pete so I'm not too worried about this as a concept. Were there particular moments where Bo got beat last night tho?
  5. Probably gonna be trench warfare, and so all the more important to have the Roussels/ Ferlands/ MacEwens/ Horvats/ Millers driving to create offense in tight. Then again, if our defense is turnover prone again it could quickly come back to cost us.
  6. Ooh if the Jackets are down I'm down. Wennberg's draft comparable was a Marcus Kruger type, smart skilled two-way center. He's also decent at face-offs at 46% and can probably fit in well with the gritty wingers around him, esp. with his good play-making. Better to have a buy-low project with potential than a guy in definite decline in Loui. If we can get Demers for Sutter I'd take that too, can let Tanev walk since Jason's kinda underrated. Not sure what the Coyotes need or if they need Sutter but if they do that's a good hockey trade.
  7. Curious as to what you guys think, Which of the following factors do you think will have the biggest impact for this playoff? a) elimination of travel between cities between games (no more travel fatigue) b) elimination of home ice advantage (given effectively neutral game sites and no home crowd energy for each game) c) possible reduction of refs "putting away whistles" (feel like there would be more scrutiny and less tolerance for "turning a blind eye" from refs, since with no crowd ambiance and likely no home bias, any trips/ dives/ slashes may be viewed with more objectivity than in other years) d) something else? Interested to hear what you guys think about this, particularly about point (C) and how much you guys think it'll impact
  8. Seems plausible for a grind-heavy bottom-6 (think it's a given that the top-6 doesn't change much). Great also to see that coach basically has interchangeable toys (e.g. MacEwen, Virtanen, Loui) to play with in case his lineup needs tinkering in any way (e.g. added scoring depth = add Jake/ Zack, added defense = add Loui, maybe reunite the shutdown second line). If Gaudette doesn't do well in his draws though I could see the following for the 3rd line: Roussel/ Ferland - Sutter - Gaudette (heavy enough on the wing and up the middle, with Gaudette as the play-maker on the wing) As long as Motte and Beagle are on the 4th with another good-skating, responsible guy they should be good to go.
  9. For both him and Ferland I'm just hoping they stay healthy and make use of any playing time. Any strong performances would be gravy IMO as both would be depth (Olli behind Hughes and Edler, Ferland likely on a 3rd line role)
  10. I think Severson/ Dumba would be the most realistic (cap dump in NJ, family narrative in Minnesota). NYR doesn't really need/ can't really afford Brock (Strome/ DeAngelo and Georgiev are all RFA's to re-sign, plus Lundqvist is still on the books for a year). Pesce would be a pipe dream (wasn't he viewed as one of the most underrated defensive D-men in the league awhile ago?), and I'm not sure I buy into the Risto hype. He seems like another Myers, high reward offensively but also with defensive risk.
  11. Hoping either move Eriksson with him and still get back a substantial asset (some Jersey fans proposed it on their fan site https://pucksandpitchforks.com/2020/07/11/new-jersey-devils-three-trade-packages-brock-boeser/ -- Bahl, 1st and 4th was the return), OR trade straight up for that defender (Severson and 1st isn't half bad, can maybe flip the first with Eriksson if it's a middle first). Given the market narrative (build around centers, defenders and a goalie) though, I don't see how a near-elite winger can get a defender of matching value (some might relate it back to Hall only getting Larsson). Either way I trust Benning's judgment.
  12. Wonder if the off-ice stuff, coupled with the fact that Zack and Micheal have been having resurgences, has been getting into his head. It certainly doesn't help when his bread and butter is labelled negatively by the captain of all people, when Ferland (for doing the same thing) is said to have had a positive camp. Agreed, what's a guy to do when there's this inconsistency? Guess he might just have to suck it up and play through the criticism and earn his spot back, since character is built after a long time but wrecked in a short time.
  13. Count it as a small win, but IMO one of the indirect aesthetic positives of face-masks is it draws so much more attention to the eyes, and many people definitely have a pretty pair of peepers.

  14. Unless 1) young top RHD comes back, 2) 1st is part of the return or 3) Loui's contract gets moved with it, I'd rather keep Brock and the extra $3 to $3.5 he's paid. Depending on his game shape it could be a big drop-off from Brock to Jake, and we can always move other assets to ship out e.g. a Roussel/ Sutter to keep Brock.
  15. Zack's breakaway speed and decision making looked pretty good in the goal against Marky esp. when being chased by a guy with good wheels in Chatfield. Thinking comparatively with how Jake got snuffed out last time by Juolevi (who's a smooth skater himself), I wonder if there's any observation/ comment to be made? Of course one may chalk it up to scrimmage but Zack definitely passes the eye test while Jake's been kinda hit and miss (didn't see Jake's powerplay goal in the highlights)
  16. True that, Karlsson/ Reilly Smith went from under-performers to become top-6 guys Imagine if Ron Francis took Loui in the Ex Draft and became the guy we all anticipated him to be and he's a steal at $6 million...
  17. I don't know about that, there has to be a reason as to why they kept Zack around so much and kept saying they liked what they saw. Maybe it's the same as the hustle and skill package that he's shown, while Jake's invisibility at times surely doesn't help his case.
  18. I'm personally in the camp of dumping him for cap space, wonder if Ottawa needs him on the wing. Brady/ Duclair/ Connor Brown look to be their only established wings though guys like Formenton/ Batherson are probably knocking hard on the door and can displace him again unless he smartens up. Also agree that Sutter can be kept and then sold as a pending UFA, along with hopefully Baertschi. I could also see us having a use for Roussel if/ when Ferland gets injured again.
  19. Zack's good in the cycle and has good chemistry with Roussel and Gaudette (small sample size given) He's up to 20 lbs heavier than Zack but Zack's not afraid to drop the mitts and play tough He might not have breakaway speed but he can get away and can also finish (RIP Francouz) If Jake has trade value and the team's sold on Zack, then to the airport it is for Jake
  20. I'm curious as to how he'll react if guys like Miller and Bo poked at him like they did with Boeser with the "heard you're getting traded" comments. While that was clearly in jest with Brock maybe that's what would be needed to light the fire under his arse again. Sure lining up with the black aces and getting outplayed by an undrafted MacEwen should be enough for him to pick things up, but I sure hope it doesn't take much more than that. Otherwise he could be an odd man out, if he isn't one already.
  21. haha always beneficial to hear a girl's $0.02 in matters like this or on clothing choices lol.
  22. Didn't know he was so skilled, watched some videos just now of his brilliant stick-work, and he's always in the right place and right time to either feather a pass for a tap-in or hammer home a puck himself. Wonder if he's got enough recognition compared with the other guys to win it though
  23. Man, what's it going to take for him to up his game/ compete level/ maturity Sure hope it's something that just a bit of time and patience will fix
  24. Crazy how good his +/- was this season (+36 and 3rd in league scoring, tied with Pastrnak), though not having seen much of him I wonder how much of that is due to his individual brilliance?
