  1. Yeah that's why I didn't disqualify the fact that big guys are needed too, but it's also true that it's not the Canucks as a whole. There are some thicker built and tough guys on this team too who will push back. We might not be loaded with Mayfield/ Dobson/ Pulock/ Pelech but the team isn't as far from being capable in that regard as we might think. Admittedly Schmidt should be paired with a heavy defensive D-man like Larsson and Hamonic needs to come back, and the 3rd C needs to be sturdy and line up with grit and some size, but I think the whole argument (and its discounting of smaller but game-breaking talent) is overdone and some heavier guys are already here. We need to strike a balance so that we're not solely slow plodding teams that would get skated out of the rink of we played the Avalanche or Lightning.
  2. Like the old adage says it's not about the size of the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog. Guys like Clutterbuck (5'11", 215 lb.) Cizikas (5'11", 195 lb.) Pageau (5'10", 180 lb.) and Greene (5'11", 180 lb.) on NYI aren't the biggest but paired with bigger players they can make an impact as part of a gritty team. Meanwhile, guys like Roussel (5'11", 199 lb.) and Virtanen (6'1", 226 lb.) don't make as much of an impact due to their laziness and lack of a constant motor that the other guys seem to have, while guys like Horvat (6', 215 lb.), Miller (6'1", 218 lb.) and Myers (6'8", 229 lb.) certainly aren't small and can contribute to an overall tough team identity if they get buy-in from others and, admittedly, add some weight especially at 3rd C, bring back Hamonic and replace Edler. Wouldn't say that they're too much of a featherweight though, since they gave Vegas all they could handle last year and dethroned the Wild and Blues, both of whom are in the top-10 in heavyweights this year.
  3. So if we sign Hall AND Perry... we get the first overall AND a final 4 appearance?
  4. Basically I doubt there's anyway they let any of them go (Makar probably anywhere from $6.5 to $8, whatever Hughes gets; Landeskog probably $7 to $8? Rantanen got $9.25 and not everyone is taking a Mackinnon discount; Grubauer probably earns $4.5-$5 after the season he had).
  5. They have to lose someone for nothing, and especially if they do protect 4 forwards, 4 defensemen and 1 goalie then they probably do move Graves. Even if they do 7-3-1 they still lose some good players (can't protect Kadri/ Toews/ Graves if they protect the following 10) Mackinnon, Rantanen, Landeskog, Burakovsky, Jost, Donskoi, Nischushkin; Makar, Johnson (NMC), Girard So if they don't want to lose a key guy it might make sense to flip him and at least retain something.
  6. He's saying we steal him from Colorado much like how we stole Schmidt from Vegas for a 3rd. If Vancouver could get him for a later pick (rather not move Costmar after last year's Juniors) that would be a solid addition, and would be great to have that top-4 solidified so Hughes is the only exclusively offensive one (presuming we re-sign Hamonic). Great idea to poach Graves.
  7. Lol so how would OP explain 2011 SCF for us (too soon?)? We had both a 2nd and 3rd overall pick... then again so did Boston (Seguin and Horton).
  8. Agreed with Wennberg (hopefully around $2 million?) and Savard (probably closer to $4-$5 million) but I want to see what we have in Podkolzin before shopping for a wing (which is probably the easiest position to get depth -- heck we even tried Highmore in the top-6/ top 9 last season so we're pretty stocked with depth there).
  9. Agreed with this, the title of the thread is basically referring to two-way D-men (for categorizing I think there's a couple main ones: players like Quinn Hughes in this stage of his career are offensive D-men, best suited to carry the offensive load; Hedman and Cernak are realistically two-way D-men; and guys like Kris Russell in Edmonton would be defensive D-men, focusing on elements of the game like shot-blocking and minding his own zone first). I can't think of any really defensive guys who also racked up points but who I'd label as a defensive D-man (Willie Mitchell fit the bill with his big shot though?)
  10. Islanders because I like a plucky underdog story (people don't always appreciate a primarily grinding, defensive style but I like that about them). Tampa's also exciting to watch though with their speed, and I was hoping for TB - COL final. The other two are good but not really cheering for them.
  11. Probably true, unless Simmons on the 76ers could individually lock down Durant and then someone else takes Kyrie. Kawhi and PG vs. KD and Kyrie would be something to witness.
  12. Anyone see a viable candidate from the West that could challenge Brooklyn? Even without Harden, KD and Kyrie are cooking and they'll probably make it out from the East (barring Milwaukee really stepping it up, or PHI/ ATL having elite defense and shot making). Maybe if it was the Clippers and they put one of Kawhi or George on the Nets' stars, but even so it'll be tough to shutdown KD's near automatic scoring (Suns at least have some wings and a healthy Paul and Booker would help for sure, and Ayton could help on the inside if the Nets slash; Denver and Utah probably can't offer much resistance).
  13. This, trade an outright problem for a project who might help in the future if he has a clean bill of health.
  14. First of all, your math is off. The first line of players you listed in bold is close to $39 million ($38.81 million). With that they already have $4 million less than you are projecting for them. With that, I do agree that if Seattle takes the prospect then they are screwed, but seeing how Vancouver acquired Nate Schmidt from Vegas for only a 3rd as they wanted to sign Pietrangelo, there's no way that we pay so much. Also, it's the media that's projecting that TBL will go 4-4-1 but even if they go 7-3-1 and their big ticket guys are left, depending on the salary structure of their trades they could still bury one or more of them instead if they refuse to leave (and I'd be fairly confident that near-contenders would come knocking at the firesale that will be this sell-off). The team could also keep Cernak and Cirelli off the table even if they don't want to move them or bundle assets to move the pricier vets. It's not optimal but ultimately it's management's decision if they decide to sell these two studs in their early-20's, though I just don't see it being their first option if they protect them in the ED.
  15. Fair point. My opinion though is that, after the top-6 F and top-4 D are signed, 3rd C is also an important depth piece to acquire, and having the right guy is important (so it'll come at a price). As mentioned in my other reply, I doubt Cirelli becomes available so in the context of this discussion Gourde became (and is) the suitable candidate since he's their incumbent 3rd C. Not saying that he's affordable at north of $5 million, but once our cap situation is optimized (and hopefully as our ELC's need re-signing the cap has gone up by then), Gourde's cap percentage probably becomes palatable.
  16. The bolded point I agree with for sure, Seattle could screw Tampa over by outright taking a prospect and then have TB pay them to take another big contract. Problem is, Cirelli's value for the Lightning is probably just behind Kucherov, Point and Stamkos as another of their shutdown centers, and while Killorn/ Palat also have value, I doubt it's enough to unseat Cirelli in their pecking order, so TB doing them dirty doesn't change who they'll protect (in the 4 I mentioned). They're not going to sell on Cirelli when they're already planning to protect him from Seattle and they could (and will have to) ship out more expensive depth in the other guys. It also doesn't mean that Vancouver can't sweep in to steal Killorn or Gourde (the two that I'd want) but again I doubt Cirelli becomes available when he's younger than both and cheaper than Gourde, while also playing a more important position in center.
  17. I'd like Cirelli and Cernak too but BriseBois seems to have those two as part of his 4-4-1 protection scheme per many predictions. I'd be happy poaching Gourde for cheaper (in terms of pick being traded out) and then shop for an RD elsewhere.
  18. I'm slightly confused -- you want them to retool when the return will be pennies on the dollar for 3 guys who are all 28 and under, then you say that you want to at least give them a chance at the playoffs and get reps? Thing is, the player or asset (high pick) in return may not necessarily gel with the other members of the Lotto Line or fit the role of 2nd line center, and that's especially true given the crapshoot that the upcoming and maybe even next draft after that could be since this batch of kids has all missed time in their development due to COVID. I also think Schmidt is not bad, just that situationally if fans don't see him as a suitable guy for a shutdown role then he could be moved to reshuffle the deck, but until that happens he still should have a top-2 (top-4 at worst) player's ability in him. With that said, I think I'm the opposite of you in that I'd prefer to keep the top-6 intact and maybe find a more defensive player to replace Schmidt through trade or FA (agreed no lottery tickets, e.g. just high pick in return).
  19. Centers and top defensemen are the toughest to get, and we drafted one (after stealing the pick from NJ) and acquired the other in a cap move from TBL... now why would we sell two of them when both are leaders on the team? We'd lose so much grit and leadership. I'd agree if either of them has been a problem to the team but there's really no indication that they have been. If Vancouver doesn't re-sign Edler but signs Hamonic to a similar deal and signs an RHD like Larsson to play next to Schmidt, then the D will look really good, so it's probably best to exercise patience. Re: OP, have to say I'll pass as Ghost doesn't fit our team needs -- if Laughton was available then I'd strongly consider him and Justin Braun for Schmidt and a pick but he just re-signed so probably wouldn't be moved.
  20. But that's ONLY after Petey and Hughes (and Hamonic) have re-signed, then we have money to play around with still. After buying out Jake (or mutual termination due to the lawsuit charges), burying Roussel/ Loui, LTIR Beagle/ Ferland and letting someone like Holtby (hopefully!) go to Seattle, we could probably pull off another Nate Schmidt-type deal, and it'd be awesome to poach someone like Yanni Gourde (he's got a big contract for sure but his speed and two-way ability would really help the 3rd line). [P.S. I didn't check to see how much cap space they would actually have after all the dead weight moves, so if there's enough money to go for a big RHD to pair with Schmidt e.g. Larsson then that would be the big-minute D pair]. Miller - Pettersson - Boeser Pearson - Horvat - Podkolzin (strong, imposing two-way unit) Motte - Gourde - Hoglander (smaller but feisty, fast and talented 3rd line) Highmore/ Hawryluk - Lind/ Boyd - Lockwood/ MacEwen Hughes - Hamonic Rathbone - Schmidt (could be the tough-minutes pair depending on Jack's progress, or sub in Juolevi) Juolevi - Myers
  21. Lol wonder if this starts a precedent for players arguing things as toe-picks. Oh they'll have examples/ reasons to point out alright.
  22. Unless he really takes off after getting traded in this situation, I could see Olli being even more stuck at the bottom of the roster than he would be here. One of the Rangers' top LD, Ryan Lindgren just signed a big extension, and another in K'Andre Miller already showed his value as a rookie and he stands at 6'5" and plays a shutdown game, so unless Olli takes a big step forward (in which case I'd want to keep him for big minutes) he might just be a depth player. If the Rangers would make the trade and Vancouver likes what we see in Schneider (I don't know much about him) and is willing to move down the 6 spots then yeah that would be a good move, esp. if Mason McTavish is still there (that's the guy that I'd want them to target).
  23. Sucks that AD got injured early, they didn't look the same.
