100% Bear might not have been a great fit for this team, especially with Hronek on board. The two biggest things preventing Juulsen from being a permanent fixture is health and his puck movement. I think this past year was the first year without any significant injuries, which is concerning for a big bruiser like him (or promising, depending on how you look at it). His playdriving ability really needs work. Hopefully he did so during the summer. Until then, he is a pure shutdown D-man and I don’t think he can move up and down the lineup. -

I think it's universally accepted around the hockey community that the only reason Bear is still a free agent is because of his surgery. Less accepted that he would've re-signed here - although I think it was definitely a possibility. RHDs are a market of their own. You and I would've got signed somewhere if we just said we were right-handed D-men. Bear is a sombre lesson to those wanting to play the World Championships without a contract extension. Maybe he wasn't fitting our needs but to suggest he wasn't a good defenceman is simply not true. He skates well, hits well, handles well and defends well. Indeed his special teams play sucks. The stats back it up. The analytics back it up. His aggressive style of play makes some of his mistakes stand out, so I understand why you might've preferred Juulsen (a very safe, low-event type of player). But I really haven't seen anyone suggest starting Juulsen over a healthy Bear. That's a unique take. -

I think Ethan Bear was quietly a solid player for us. He moved the puck well and defended well. There wasn't ever an instance where he really stood out, and that was a good thing. His PK metrics were poor, but had we offered him 2x$2M, I would've been totally fine with it. -
Unable to wait for @Patrick Kane and his entourage, Special Assistant to the GM Amanda Kessel has deferred the Pittsburgh Penguins draft selection process to GMs @Primal Optimist/@Gator. They have my shortlist and either member will make my selection to help speed things up. Hurry up, you lazy Chicago Blackhawks!

You're sidestepping the question. Why are you complaining about size when we added a bunch of large blueliners this July? -
[Report] QMJHL Bans Fighting
Miss Korea Bob.Loblaw replied to Drive-By Body Pierce's topic in General Hockey Discussion
So right now, the CHL is currently the only development league that still permits fighting. If you fight in any other junior league in the world, you are automatically ejected/suspended. USHL bans it. NCAA bans it. European leagues ban it. Even the CJHL bans it. Where have all the draftees been coming from lately? That's right - less and less from the CHL and more from everywhere else. -

Our lineup is balanced by a fairly large blueline. The players we added? Cole? Soucy? Irwin? They're all big. What's your point about comparing our blueline to Vegas? This team has gone in the exact direction you've wanted them to go. Why are you complaining? As for Suter's linemates last year, where did you come up with Bertuzzi? The data is all here: https://www.naturalstattrick.com/playerreport.php?fromseason=20222023&thruseason=20222023&stype=2&sit=all&stdoi=oi&rate=n&v=t&playerid=8480459 -

Hypothetically, do you think a pairing of Hughes and Spurgeon won't work? Of course it would work. Our third line just got its centre - this is going to work. You are mistaken to believe Myers was great defensively when he first arrived, or even in WPG. He was signed by Benning because he was big and could move the puck. Myers has always needed someone to overcome his deficiencies, you're 100% right about that. But that partner doesn't have to be big or strong. Just like Myer's failures have nothing to do with size, his partner's size won't dicate what works well or not. He just has to play well. Pius Suter plays his role incredibly well, and this is why fans are sold on him. But you're dismissing him just because he and his linemates are short. You're not even giving them a chance to prove themselves. When all those guys get roughed up and end up on the injured reserve, you can say "I told you so". Until then, I'm looking forward to our third line playing tight hockey, midget or otherwise. @hammertime That is a cup-winning team. We are not even close to being there (although our blueline did get bigger/stronger). All we should be aiming for is getting 100 points in the regular season - a goal which hockey media doesn't think we can achieve. -

Using your logic... If size matters to an overall line, then size absolutely should matter to the individual. Just looking at our defencemen... who is our best player and who is our worst? Hmm? We paid someone $6 million annually because he was the tallest player in the NHL. How has that turned out for us? -

You need to stop thinking of their heights as a weakness. Jared Spurgeon is 5'9 and he is a fantastic two-way defenceman for Minnesota. He hits. He blocks shots. He eats minutes like an ox. Pius Suter is an excellent defensive forward and that isn't going to change just because his linemates are shorter. The number of sub-6' players has been increasing every single year. Things are going to be okay. -

Probably the biggest story of that single cup run. Came out of nowhere, and then suddenly gone after two months. Being undersized obviously lends itself towards those players developing a fast, skill-based offensive game. No doubt about that. But if they choose to be aggressive forechecking defenders as well, there's nothing stopping them. -

Height does not directly correlate to defensive prowess. There are too many exceptions for that argument to work. Lehkonen, Gourde, Spurgeon, and of course Suter are all excellent two-way players who have made names for themselves by being aggressive defenders, despite their somewhat short stature. Indeed, other than Suter the three other names I mentioned were all key contributors last year and helped their teams make the playoffs. -

Hard to call Hoglander a "regular", no? Size doesn't matter for us right now. We just need to win games and show everyone (including themselves and us fans) that this is a playoff team. From there improvements can be made. In any case, our blueline has enough size to keep opponents honest. -
