[Proposal] Trade - Van/ Cal
Miss Korea Bob.Loblaw replied to kenhodgejr's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Noah Hanifin is a top-pairing defenceman (their #1 guy) and Coleman is still a very strong two-way game. Hanifin alone would fetch far more than Boeser + Rathbone. Boeser + Rathbone + 1st round pick maybe. Add Coleman and you need to send even more their way. -
Seattle can probably do better. They absolutely stockpiled their draft picks these first few years. 10 picks this past draft. 11 the year before. The Avalanche will always make the playoffs as long as their core is healthy. They qualified despite getting ravaged by injuries this year. They lost a ton of man-games. Doesn't matter if they crash out in first round - they're getting a spot. Flames are a coin flip. They're a strong team on paper but the dressing room seems like it's about to completely implode. They're one losing streak away from blowing it up. This is something I feel Canucks fans have forgotten over the years - you actually have to be a good regular season team before trying to be a good playoff team. Some of these teams aren't built for winning in April, but they'll win a lot of games over the course of six months. And that makes it harder for us to beath them. I'm not sure if Vancouver is a good enough regular season team to earn a seat at the playoff table.

The Pittsburgh Penguins announce Mikko Rantanen (literally the only player on the team) as the first captain of this young franchise. May he lead his team and the league in offensive WAR contributions.
-
@Patrick Kane The Chicago Blackhawks are on the clock (but not really)

The Pittsburgh Penguins organization would like to thank Gator and Master Mind for their excellent hospitality. We would also like to congratulate... no one. The analytics dynasty starts here. The Pittsburgh Penguins are proud to select... from TPS of the Finnish Elite League... Mikko Rantanen. Defensive stats be damned. Now don't wake me up until the second round!

[Buyout] Tony DeAngelo

Have you and I been following the same sport all these years? Hockey players being mature? Guys like the Sedins are exceptions to the rule. -
I knew someone here would know Heinen. He's probably chilling in Langley right now. Don't put too much stock into Aman's card. Last year he was basically a part-time rookie who subbed in wherever he was needed. All these numbers can get turned upside down depending on what kind of environment he plays in this year. Maybe he ends up in the same position but just improvements across the board. A couple of things do stand out, however. He did a solid job defending in his own end, while doing an even better job on the PK. And he was also a black hole offensively. Definitely needs to work on that this offseason if he wants a permanent spot on this team. If paired with two scoring wingers (like Boeser and Beauvillier), he won't have the ability to dish the puck. Which brings us back to those two wingers. Both have really struggled the last couple of years. What's concerning is that both of them used to have very strong analytics. That's why you can see how far they've dropped off in the progression chart. Flashback a couple of years and both of them had blue numbers across the board - true top six material where they belonged. Their potential is obviously high - no doubt about. Boeser in particular looked fantastic during the 19-20 season. But neither have played up to that potential for some time now, and thus most posters here would agree both are not worth their contracts. Here's something that might alarm you - some of Beauvillier's numbers actually dropped off after playing games here in Vancouver. Below is his card at the time of the trade (so just factoring his games for NYI). Compare it to the one I posted earlier. At least his scoring went up.

That's an interesting way to look at things, especially with how Detroit handle Hronek. Hmm. I feel like Hronek was put in a position to succeed, to help the team win. That we agree on. But I don't think was done purely to jack up his trade value. It was done to win games. It's hard to say why Detroit dumped him, especially when he could've helped with the rebuild. I'm certain had they been in a playoff position in February, they would've just kept Hronek and pushed ahead. I'm also not certain Detroit did a good job pumping up Hronek's value, as he started to really struggle in January and February. The obvious reason for this is because he went from playing with Olli Maatta to playing with.... Ben Chiarot. You don't jack up a player's value by pairing him with Ben ****ing Chiarot. That would've been like us trying to jack up Tyler Myer's value by pairing him with Ekman-Larsson. But to bring this back to Beauvillier, I'm just not sure where he fits on this team. Forcing him up the depth chart will only go so far for a player of his useful-but-limited skillset.
-
Oh, I agree with you that Beauvillier can't hold down a first line role on his own merit, so for that reason I don't think it's a great idea to put him in a position to fail. Look at it this way - you've already named potential replacements. Let's just say Höglander becomes the #1 LW option. It makes more sense just to have Hogs there to start the season, and not after 40 games. We need Pettersson and his linemates to help us win games, not pump up trade value. Horvat did that last year and it was a wasted season within two months.
-
Did he succeed here, though? He was off to a hot start playing on the first line, made more notable with him outperforming Horvat. But that didn't last long. His scoring dried up, and eventually fell to the third line by April. If Vancouver wants to win games, the best strategy is for our top lines to consist of players who earned that position, not trade assets you're trying to overinflate before dealing away. Beauvillier hasn't shown anything yet to earn the top LW position. If he does turn things around and earns that spot, we should just keep him.

(SPECULATION) Nux interested in UFA D Matt Dumba
Miss Korea Bob.Loblaw replied to RWJC's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
You must be referring to this graphic - I think this was his last big year before a very slow decline. Even near the end he was one of the best defensive forwards in the NHL. Steen was a truly underrated player throughout his whole career, marred by very inconsistent finishing. Think about it - this guy went on absolute scoring tears and then just nothing the next 10 games. A lot like Thomas Vanek, but the difference was that Steen played a very hard-nosed defensive game. As for why Kane's model seems to betray his playmaking ability, it's seemingly because of his passing style. He's a flashy passer and has the vision to back it up, and so when he makes that cross-crease play, his linemate shoots into an empty net, even if it only works 25% of the time. Just look at this heat map - he never passes into the slot (technically making him ineffective on paper) and tries to thread the needle instead. It's crazy stuff. He's probably the reason why all young American hockey players aged 15-25 fell in love with the game. One thing is clear, though - he hasn't been able to backcheck for many years now. Analytically the worst defensive forward in the NHL. This is a very sensible assessment of Dumba. Despite his size, he plays a very physical defensive game, hitting a lot and blocking a lot. He didn't have any powerplay minutes this year but killed a ton of penalties (and he wasn't half bad it either). BUT... that physicality is actually my biggest concern. His body has already started to break down, which is why he didn't live up to his contract. Even if we paid him peanuts, the concern is that he won't be able to stay healthy all season long. It's risky to sign a player expecting him to get injured at some point - messes with team chemistry. Now if we can expect him to play 72+ games with a similar performance as this year (while getting paid under $2M), he's not a terrible option to put beside Hughes. -
Linden and the Stanley Cup Finals Game 6 phantom menace
Miss Korea Bob.Loblaw replied to Slegr's topic in Canucks Talk
That's just Don Cherry brand rock em sock em hockey. It took 100 years for hockey to take elbows and headshots out of the game. Regarding the first hit on Linden, I wonder if he actually remembers anything from game 6. -

Not much. He's just not making the intelligent play. I know it's pointless comparing him to a future Hall of Famer but Chára actually drew a lot of penalties because of the way he played. Big Z retaliated a lot during his career but if he was going to go to the box he made sure to take his opponent with him.
