I already admitted my mistake where I thought Rutta was left-handed. And yet, you want to take this right-handed defenseman and put him on the left side anyways with Myers. Pittsburgh wants two-way forwards. Maybe Beau looked like one back in 2020 but that is clearly not the case anymore. Now he's just an overpaid winger who's lost quite a bit of trade value.

Like the above posters mentioned, it's one thing to sign a winger to a $4M AAV contract knowing he will play third line. It's another thing to trade for that type of player. It's a WHOLE other thing to actually trade up for that. You're suggesting Beauvillier can fetch a top 6 D-man plus tax. That's just way too unrealistic.

(SPECULATION) Nux interested in UFA D Matt Dumba
Miss Korea Bob.Loblaw replied to RWJC's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Do you know how many people here have an outdated impression of Dumba? There are some who still think he is some kind off offensive PP specialist. He didn't play a single minute on the power play but he did kill a lot of penalties. CDC just remembers Bubble Dumba. Apparently Woo played really well when all his teammates were getting called up. I still think that's a long cry from actually making the main roster. If you cut Wolanin, Woo and Juulsen on the same day in early October, there will be 30 other teams putting skaters on the waiver wire. Good odds they all clear. -

If you can get Dumba for cheap, it does shake things up. Not a perfect fit by any means (he'll get cooked in transition plays) but at least you don't force Myers on the PK anymore. Hughes - Dumba Cole - Hronek Soucy - Myers Irwin/Breezy - Juulsen -
Sorry - no idea why I thought he was right-handed. I think I've seen him feature on the left side. With proposals like these and others talking about Dumba, it's clear that we think the team needs one more NHL-level RHD. Rutta did hold his own playing top minutes with Hedman. Right now he's a meat-and-potatoes defensive D-man. He's big, he blocks, he hits, and he clears. Irwin actually does fill those boxes, but he's left-handed. As for Beauvillier? He's an overpaid middle-six shoot-first winger who needs help generating scoring chances and can't kill penalties. Why would Pittsburgh pay anything for that? Their GM just got fired for this reason. As you mentioned, they're about to buy out a middle-six pass-first centre who needs help generating scoring chances and can't kill penalties. Remember who's in charge of Pittsburgh now. Beau's analytics are poor. It's not a good match.

This is a cap dump. It doesn't make sense for Pittsburgh to give up the higher value pick and the cheaper player. As for Jan Rutta... he's another left-handed D-man who can play both sides. There's nothing he brings to the table that Matt Irwin doesn't already provide - and we don't even know if Irwin is good enough to crack the roster.

It's getting late in the offseason. Tatar is the last big domino that hasn't yet fallen. Apart from guys like Suter/Dumba, the only free agents left are primarily old guys and minimum wage players (like the ones I had in my OP). To that end, I doubt Suter and Dumba will get anything more than a cheap 1-year deal. As for the kids... I don't know if any of the defensemen are ready for the big jump. Maybe Hirose. We have some notable forwards to use - Aman, Podkolzin, and Hoglander. But come preseason, every team brings try-out skaters. It's not out of the ordinary for a try-out or two to outperform the prospects and make the team. If that happens, I want them to be useful players like ZAR or Heinen, and not guys like Hamonic and Chiasson (who we signed after try-outs).

Juulsen is 26 - even Hronek is younger than him. But for me years of pro experience is more important. This is Juulsen's seventh year in pro - not everyone suddenly blossoms like Chatfield. Not on the same team, at least. But the only RHD we have that are waiver eligible are Juulsen and Woo. Both of them improved their game last year but there's no way a team tries to claim either one in October. I also don't think Woo will crack the roster, so that leaves you with... maybe Cole McWard? Of course, you can just shove any of our LHD onto the right side. Soucy, Cole, Irwin... they've all done it. In that case, you better hope Hirose is ready to play that third pairing. -

We essentially have two open positions: our 6th and 7th defensemen. Our waiver eligible guys are Rathbone, Brisebois, Irwin, Juulsen, Woo, and Wolanin. Our exempt players are McWard, Hirose, and Johansson. What I see is a long list of 7th options but not a single player who could be a 6th D-man on a playoff team. -

Bad at 5v5. Didn't play power play at all. Played a lot of penalty kill and was decent at it. Doesn't necessarily mean he'd be a good fit (although I think he could). But let's get one huge myth out of the way. He wasn't used like an offensive D-man/power play specialist last year. Not even remotely. He's small, but he hits and he blocks. -

Right... only... Dumba didn't play on the powerplay last year. At all. But he did play extensive minutes on the PK. He blocked a ton of shots, and his shorthanded metrics were actually pretty good last year. I mentioned it in my earlier post - if penalty killing is all you want, Dumba is actually an upgrade to someone like Myers. -

Then offer him a contract that befits his current ability. Something close to $1.5M, one year. Take it or leave it. I'd be okay with that deal as a fan. Had Dumbs become a UFA next year, some team would've offered him 3 x $3.5M. He obviously wants to pick his next team wisely so that dream can become a lucrative reality. -

Here we go again. What are you basing this off? Dumba isn't an offensive D-man anymore and he knows it. He's lost his speed which makes him susceptible to rushes but he blocks a ton of shots and is still good at killing penalties. Look it up. If Vancouver was shorthanded all game long, Dumba would be a perfect 2nd pair option. -

No doubt Dumba isn't good. He kept getting 2nd pair minutes when he had clearly declined. But at this point, I'll take a pylon over nothing. A couple of (inevitable) injuries on the blueline and we have to use college kids again. I do think Dumbs will end up playing decent hockey on whatever third pairing he ends up in. God help him if he needs to play more minutes again. -

Not unlike OEL, nobody would've complained if Myers was earning less than $2M. Dumba is right-handed - that's pretty much what we need. There are no other RHD UFAs out there, unless you count Cal Foote (who nobody wants) or Ethan Bear (who nobody wants). Our depth chart for right handed D-men goes Hronek, Myers, Juulsen... and then who? McWard? Woo? -
[Signing] Sabres sign Zach Benson
Miss Korea Bob.Loblaw replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
100% he would've been selected by Jet Black Jim. -
Again - you've put Hogs and Podz too far down the depth chart. If you want to put Podkolzin in the press box or on the fourth line, better to just send him back down to Abbotsford. For Hoglander, probably better to trade him away (not sure if he's still waiver-exempt). Garland is a criminally underrated playmaker. In 5v5 situations, he's probably our second-best playmaking forward (behind Pettersson). Wherever he plays, he will definitely bolster the scoring on that line. The problem is when Boeser/Beauvillier fall into the bottom six. They are not good at passing or creating scoring chances, leaving the third/fourth line without any real identity. Podkolzin has a lot to focus on. We worked very hard this past season on developing his two-way game. I'm not opposed to him getting sent back down for the first half of the year.
