  1. The asking price around the deadline was the equivalent of 3 first-round picks. I don't think the OP would be willing to give up 3 first rounders for Karlsson. But a contender might be willing to do 2 firsts plus other stuff.
  2. Is anyone courageous enough to try and open up another thread on the LGBTQ+ situation?  Last one took 2 days to get locked

If all it takes is 1 person to derail such a thread, it's just going to happen again. As nice as it would be to be able to discuss such things in a stable and productive manner, CDC just isn't going to be that kind of platform that can do that.

@Master Mind @The Lock It's become a pretty important issue in the the NHL, where every team and player decision is newsworthy.  So for a hockey forum to be unable to even talk about those things (without completely breaking down into homophobic slander) is disappointing.  The hockey subreddits have done a much better job approaching this topic.

All I'll say further is, if your goal is to tell people against the LGBTQ+ community that they're hiding under a rock, all that's going to do is make them even more against that community. I get the sentiment, I really do, but you have to go about it the right way. You need to win allies, and a forum without using the right tact... that's just going to have the opposite effect.

I agree that the homophobic slander is disappointing, but telling people it's wrong isn't going to make people on the opposite side actually see that it's wrong. You need to go to the core of why they think the way they do in the first place and figure out how to make them an ally.

Anyway, I'm not going to reply further on this. "Newsworthy" does not mean "forumworthy" and there are too many people on this forum who would likely blunder any possibility of talking to people of a differing opinion.

  3. This is well said about Kotkaniemi's role in Carolina. He is part of their core for years to come. It's why they offer sheeted him, and why he got paid a tidy sum with term. They wouldn't risk the team balance by trading him away for some offensive upside.
  4. If you are looking to get anything of value in return for OEL, you simply won't. As hard as it would be for Chicago to move Jones' contract, it is going to be even harder for us to move Ekman-Larsson. This is because Jones is a solid D-man who is earning way too much money. OEL is a bad D-man who has been healthy scratched whose only value exists if he gets a LTIR-type injury. At least with Jones you know you're getting a decent two-way effort.
  5. Oh yes, they are both brutal contracts, but I think anyone watching hockey would prefer Jones at $9.5M over Ekman-Larsson at $7.1M. "Prefer" being a fully relative term, but a lateral trade would be totally fine with me.
  6. Somehow ended up on the all-star team this year though. He made the team by default, but that is indeed a current all-star you are disrespecting! It's funny to see everyone dismissing Jones. We're giving up OEL for him. We would actually be getting a useful, overpaid player in exchange for a useless, overpaid player on a slightly shorter contract. It's a fairly lateral trade, but Jones at this point has far more upside than OEL does. Does it make sense for Chicago to pull this trade? No, but the argument is that OEL's contract is shorter and cheaper.
  7. You think Blues fans like him? They aren't happy about him playing like crap or riling up the crowd after giving up FOUR quick ones. He has been absolute trash this year and one of the reasons they are out of the playoffs.
  8. Actually Bennington rode that streak long enough for one big playoff push. He's been an overpaid hothead ever since. I dont think it was unreasonable to expect. 900 hockey from Martin but he did much worse. With Boudreau and even under Tocchet, this team has taken such an offensive approach to the game. It's a high risk, high reward system that favors a strong forward core, although it leaves our defense very ugly. This, along with a leaguewide increase in scoring, makes it harder for our goaltenders to look good. Our team is a team where Petey tallies 4 points and "steals" a game for us.
  9. I think some people are forgetting that Spencer Martin was outplaying Thatcher Demko at the start of the season. A start which had us go winless in our first seven games. It was a nightmare to watch us lose day in, day out - sometimes in dramatic fashion, too. When Demko went down, it was sensible to keep Martin in net. He was a feel-good story after playing lights out last year and outshining Halak. I think it was fair to believe he could keep that up for a while, and unfortunate that he couldn't. Even now I don't think those horrible stats from this season reflect his level of play. The tank job started to begin when other players started to go down. And the REAL tank job was when management held onto Boudreau for no apparent reason.
  10. The funny part of this is that out of the three teams (CGY, CBJ), only one of them really won the day (Florida).
  11. We just traded for that partner. It would be very disappointing for management (the fans too) if Hronek didn't up playing top minutes with Quinn.
  12. I can assure you I haven't seen ANY analytic models suggesting Myers and OEL were considered good shutdown D-men last year, and definitely none from JF. Kinda hard to shut things down when you keep getting sent to the box...
  13. Hmm. What's giving you the feeling that Calgary is going to tank next year? I doubt it. I think they're an interesting team that made some risky (but necessary) moves last summer, and they haven't paid off. They are right up against the cap next season. The Flames are a perfect example of a team that needs a re-tool. They have a mature core that isn't old by any means, but it hasn't worked this year. Even if they let Treliving go (which I also doubt), they'll try to get a GM committed to winning now. Which brings us back to the trade floor. Calgary needs to figure out what went wrong and shake things up. Even if we offer up our wingers (any mixture of Garland, Boeser, Höglander) for Hanifin, does that fix their problems? As much as I hate to say it, their biggest issue is Jacob Markström. He's played alright in March, but this season has been a disaster. He was so good last year, so everything is a big question mark for that team.
  14. Last one, for real this time. OEL, your model NHL elite athlete, is currently being vastly outplayed by a ragtag team of AHL D-men who would've never seen the light of day in Vancouver had we not been ravaged by injuries. Nagging injuries, new coach, easier schedule - I get it. But we are winning more without OEL than we ever did with him.
  15. And OEL hasn't been elite in over 6 years - there is little to no indication that he has what it takes to become the #1 D-man he once was, and every indication to suggest he will play worse than our current Abbotsford squad. Bless you for thinking OEL has what it takes to even become a $3.5M level of defenceman in the future. He is trying his best but simply doesn't have the legs to keep up anymore. For the record, I think the likelihood of a imminent buyout is low. But enough back and forth for now - you folks carry on without me!
  16. If we want to trade this version of OEL at any point during his contract, a team wouldn't be willing to openly take him on at $3.6M (50% cap retained). We would have to pay extra to get his contract off our books. You don't get to trade away OEL without giving up draft picks.
  17. That's my point about Karlsson. Nobody expected this given his long injury history. Using that as a model and expect other injured guys to return to peak form (actually - Karlsson is having a CAREER year) is simply unrealistic.
  18. I would argue that trading away picks to a team willing to take on that contract is also unacceptable. We would not only have to retain cap but also surrender futures. Even then, I don't know if any team wants to ice a $3.6M defenceman who would be even worse than he's been now. If he's a LTIR casualty, we can just bury him in Vancouver.
  19. You are expecting a player who hasn't been healthy for 4 years and is currently on IR (after supposedly playing hurt all year) to be 100% next year? Am I the only one here that doesn't understand this reasoning?
  20. Okay, then - how many years are you willing to wait for a return to form before pulling the trigger on a buyout? Our window for winning is shockingly shorter than what we would've gotten from a proper rebuild. Let's rule out any LTIR shenanigans.
  21. Correct - that reflected his last year in Arizona. This one reflects his current season. Take it or leave it, folks:
