Erik Karlsson is an exceptional case in which he has been healthy for the first time in years - you'd have to look way back into his Ottawa days to find a season where he wasn't injured. If you're going to try relying on an exceptional case as a measure of how OEL can bounce back, how is that a more reasonable take? Age is an outdated measurement of prime years. It is much harder to suggest OEL still has the legs to return back to form than to suggest he is well past his prime. Even if he is 100% healthy in September (wishful thinking), how long do you think that'll last? The justification is that I think we are better off without OEL on our team and with an extra $2.1 million in cap space, which is what OP was arguing. The LTIR argument is a compelling one. But you'd have to prove that he's unhealthy enough to quit playing professional hockey. Even if OEL was hurt, nothing suggests he has given up trying to keep playing. Not being good enough (due to injury history) isn't going to put him on LTIR. There needs to be something that's preventing him from being fit enough to lace up the skates.
-
One simply needs to watch him play to understand he has been no good. This season he was hurt where? Before his ankle what was wrong with him? His surgically repaired wrist? His surgically repaired hip? His surgically repaired knee? This is the player you think is going to bounce back next season - the guy who peaked over 5 years ago and has ruined his body by fighting through multiple injuries? Him? Really??

Consider it a report card with a bell curve. Compared to every other player, he would've been the bottom 1% of PKers. Someone like Makar or Bergeron would have close to 100s across the board. I am surprised to still find OEL apologists. I guess CDC is legit the last bastion for his defenders. It's one thing if OEL's analytics don't match up with how he has played. The trade was universally panned on Benning wistfully thinking he could return to form in Vancouver. Last year, that wish almost became true and all his statistics showed. This year... are you folks just not watching games? Not much to say other than that he sucked. Every single report card on OEL suggested he was one of the league's worst D-men on the ice and inferior to a replacement player. Guess what? We have 4 replacement players on our blueline right now and they are doing better. Ekman-Larsson is a case in which the analytics absolutely match the eye test. There is no context needed.

There are those who are saying he might return a more effective defender after recovering from his injury or just play better under Tocchet. That is extremely wishful thinking. OEL was hot garbage at the time Benning traded for him. He actually improved his first year here in Vancouver before regressing back to what everyone expected of him. I say again - OEL was bad two years ago and everyone seemed to know it except our former GM. This was from 2021:
-
A $2M defenceman is better than OEL. No, check that - an AHL player on a minimum contract is better than OEL. It's a bit uncanny how well the blueline has looked during this run, but there's no doubt OEL was making this team much worse.

Are the Canucks Actually in Cap Hell?
Miss Korea Bob.Loblaw replied to CanucksJay's topic in Canucks Talk
Probably not. Despite being good enough to play in the NHL, there is a reason he had to get demoted two years in a row. Garland has a been an excellent partner for Miller - he makes his teammates better. I think it's asking a lot for Hogs to jump back into the top six without a hitch. -
It is interesting to see such stubbornness from a Canucks fan like @HKSR, considering we had a pair of identical twins and they still had different skill sets. Some players are small and tough while others are big and soft. I thought this was an uncontroversial statement- I guess not.

Physics does not explain how Pettersson has the strength to outmuscle opponents and retain possession despite being lighter than the majority of players in the league. It isn't just about talent or work ethic. He knows how to use his body more effectively than other players, and the same goes for Garland. If a loose puck was in the corner, with Boeser and Brad Marchand fighting for it, who do you think would win? In any case, it's as you said. Garland is always more determined than Boeser to win the puck.
-
This is absolutely not matched by statistics or an eye test. Garland will chase loose pucks like a mad dog, which is why fans took such a liking to him last year. He has an incredibly high work ethic and is a far more physical player than Boeser has ever been. https://theathletic.com/4209685/2023/02/17/conor-garland-vancouver-canucks-analysis/

Hits and Misses - Evaluating Rutherford and Allvin
Miss Korea Bob.Loblaw replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Canucks Talk
Of those names you mentioned, they can't all play on this team next year. We simply don't have the cap space to afford it. Some of them will likely have to be traded at a discounted price. -
You just proved my point about Garland. He is a tenacious, effective, and criminally underused player on this team. He does everything on both ends of the ice, and makes his teammates better. His style of play is incredibly physical for someone of his diminutive stature. And then there's his analytics, which despite having a bad year, still look pretty sexy (especially compared to Boeser's).

Hits and Misses - Evaluating Rutherford and Allvin
Miss Korea Bob.Loblaw replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Canucks Talk
Ottawa isn't a bottom feeder. They're clearly a team on an upward trajectory despite a very uneasy ownership situation. They're still fighting to make the playoffs. We are Philly. A team with a low overall age because of its bottom six, tied down by a bunch of anchor contracts. Strange deadline moves that got pundits scratching their heads. -
Benning drafted an alien and signed a giraffe. He's the one that made us taller, not Allvin. In any case, weird for you to suggest they keep Boeser over Garland because he's taller and therefore more durable. I think Garland has missed 3 games or something during his two years here.

5-15 runs yes

Philly has a lot of contracts to deal with during this rebuild. Hayes, Provorov, Ristolainen (who has suddenly become a defensive D-man), are all on bonkers Fletcher deals. Sanheim just signed for eight years and has struggled under Torts this year. And then you have the unintentional LTIR crew: Atkinson, Ellis, & Couturier. Can you believe they actually traded for some of these guys? Oof. And they didn't trade away the one guy (JVR) who still had value at the deadline. Good luck Briere - it'll get harder before it gets better!

75 Year Anniversary of Larry Kwong's 1st NHL Game

We haven't drafted 7 players since 2019. Doesn't make any sense. We also have a barebones prospect cupboard. Who do we have? Hoglander, Karlsson, and Silovs. Those are the only three likely to get some playing time on Vancouver next year. Yes we have other players in the system like Lekkerimaki, Pettersson, Jurmo, and Klimovich... but 7 prospects for a team that never makes the playoffs is pathetic.

There are plenty of hockey channels out there on YouTube, and they are overwhelmingly cynical about the Canucks. You have Eck (a Rangers fan from Halifax), Johnny Hawkey (Flames), UrinatingTree (Penguins), you have Jesse Pollock (Jets) and the rest of the Bardown team (mostly Leafs except for Luca the Avs fan), and then of course the crew from Spittin' Chiclets. On top of that, the main hockey subreddit is diverse enough to get a decent first take. They are all OVERWHELMINGLY embarrassed for Vancouver and how everything has been mismanaged this season. Our reputation is atrocious across the league, and the Boudreau fiasco did make an impression on players. None of them have 100% accurate takes on it, because they are human, like you and me. But the feeling that the Canucks are screwed is universal. The only place I've found that remains somewhat optimistic about the Canucks is right here on CDC. It's really not that hard to hear hockey opinions from hockey fans outside Vancouver nowadays. Everything you're saying here is a bunch of fluffy nonsense. All of it can be boiled down to statement "How do you know? Let's just wait and see." Nobody knows, not even management. But this is a forum, man. People who come here (especially on non-game days) are here to talk about the Canucks and try to predict what's gonna happen. We're all just fans who have no control over team decisions - you don't think we know that? You don't think any other hockey people on YouTube or even notable figures like Eliotte Friedman know that? If everyone here was like you, they'd be living in a vacuum where nothing that's happened in the past matters. Forget this disaster of a season and the ones before. Forget Aquilini's reputation. Forget Rutherford's history with Carolina/Pittsburgh, or even so far with Vancouver. Forget all of it. Who knows what'll happen? Maybe this core will magically wake up and win the cup next year, and maybe they won't. What a nonsense take. Why are you even on this forum if you're not interested in trying to predict what'll happen? P.S.: Get out from that rock you've been living under and face the reality of what outsiders think of us.
