They have plenty of time as a team, just not for some of the older guys. Team average age is 26.8 (not far off us at 26.0). Most of the core stuck through the rebuild phase and actually helped accelerate the process. Thanks to Quick, they returned to the playoffs last year way ahead of schedule. They have no reason to go all in this year and are content filling in their core as the young players improve and the last of that cup core gets phased out. With Brown and Quick gone, it's only Doughty and Kopitar left - who by the way, are still very effective players.

[Waivers] Mark Friedman, Brock McGinn
Miss Korea Bob.Loblaw replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
It would be funny if we claimed one of them just to send back one our players back through a trade, but these are both players who could immediately slot into our team. Friedman is a part-timer in the NHL, but we could certainly use a right-handed D-man right about now. We have literally scraped the bottom of the barrel by calling up Juulsen. The only healthy RHD left is Woo. I understand that McGinnis would make a greater impact and help our PK on a daily basis, but putting a claim on Friedman would be much easier. We managed to find a home for a defensive reject in Schenn and get trade value off of him. Friedman is a completely different player with a much smaller sample size, but even if he serves as our 7th D-man this year the next, it'll be worth it. -
Are We Back on the JR Bandwagon Yet?

You are thinking of key players, or even franchise players. As an example here's 2011's team... Key: H. Sedin, D. Sedin, Kesler, Luongo Core: Samuelsson, Burrows, Ehrhoff, Edler, Bieksa, Hamhuis Regulars: Raymond, Malhotra, Torres, Hansen, Higgins, Lapierre, Salo, Ballard, Schneider Depth: Tambellini, Glass, Alberts, Rome, Oreskovich, Tanev Today's team? Key: Pettersson, Hughes, Miller, Demko (Horvat) Core: Kuzmenko, Beauvillier, Boeser, Garland, Mikheyev Regulars: Dries, Joshua, Lazar, OEL, Myers, Bear, Martin (Schenn) Depth: Aman, Studnicka, Podkolzin, Burroughs, Delia (Stillman) -
Her due date is this week. That's a full term of 40 weeks. She's done traveling for some time. It's also unwise for mothers to fly with their newborns until at least a couple months postpartum. Stop pretending like the Canucks are a caring organization that treats its staff well. This year of all years, I'm surprised how quickly people forget.

Again - if Rielly or Karlsson (who is better offensively but even worse defensively) isn't good enough to belong in the NHL, why are they constantly brought up and paid like top-tier D-men? People here don't think you're crazy because you value defending over attacking. They think you're crazy because you think Jack Johnson or even RILEY STILLMAN is a more valuable D-man to their team because their defensive analytics (something you don't believe in, btw) are better than Rielly's. Even OEL has better defensive analytics, and he's on a similar contract. You're going to tell us that OEL is a more valuable player than Rielly? He is a valuable tank commander, sure... TJ Brodie? His offensive production has dried up for some time now, but his defensive output is better than ever. If there was an award for best defensive defenceman, he would be a dark horse candidate - although someone like Jonas Brodin is far more deserving of it. I really don't understand why a pure offensive D-man like Rielly or Karlsson (not Makar, who is pretty reliable defensively) doesn't belong in the NHL because they're not as good as someone like prime Keith or Hedman. Those guys are no-doubt, first ballot Hall of Famers. You've mentioned two of the greatest hockey players to ever play the game. Erik Karlsson is also going to belong in that category, even if he never plays in the postseason again. I expect him to win his third Norris trophy by the end of this year. Do you think that he and Rielly are AHL-caliber players because they don't have Stanley Cups and can't defend? That's what @King Heffybelieves, verbatim. Yes - playoffs reward physical play and defensive discipline because of injuries and lenient reffing. A defenceman's job is to contribute to wins, whether it's in the regular season or playoffs. Makar's reliable defensive play was important in helping his team win the cup, but his offensive production is what everyone remembers, and why he won the Norris/Conn Smythe. He was the one who feasted on any forward or defender trying to maintain him. Not even the blueline could stop Makar last year from scoring.

This statement is completely false in today's age. You are holding a view that has been long abandoned in the NHL for some time now. Erik Karlsson and Morgan Rielly are two of the most valuable D-men in the NHL. Karlsson, who is likely THE worst defender in the entire league, is going to win the Norris Trophy. In case you haven't noticed, the league has shifted towards high octane offense, and puck-moving blueliners are an absolute must now. Even the purest of shutdown D-men (which is a dying breed now, btw) need to know how to move the puck. We've seen this trend in soccer too. I'm surprised you still haven't noticed it in hockey.

We've been waiting longer for a cup - why not manifest that instead -
Neither team has played consistently this year. Kings just barely have a positive goal differential now, and I think the Oilers' problems are obvious. I suspect those last two H2H games will determine the seedings and who gets home advantage in the first round. The seedings in the Western conference are wide open. They could go on a late run and end up being 1st in the division or go on a slump and fall to the last wild card. Calgary is the only team outside the top 8 that needs to decide what to do after the deadline. It's nothing like the East, which has set teams at the top and a whole bunch of rats scavenging for the wildcard spots.

Oilers are a team that'll score 5 goals (McDavid with 2G, 3A) but you'd still have to check the other team's score to determine if they won or not. This week they beat Pittbsurgh 7-2, and then lost 6-5 to Colorado and.... Columbus?? I think Edmonton will face the Kings in round one again. Is it even clear they'll beat LA? Who's starting in their net, OP?

No that really isn't enough... that's Horvat money and Meier is younger and better than Horvat
