  1. I mean, that is wishful thinking to believe that McDavid and Draisaitl will cool off. They've never had a bad year in their careers. What is more likely is that they'll have off games and pick up losses, but will likely end up in the same spot they were last April - a solid playoff position. Calgary is more of a surprise because they are a bad team on paper. I think we'll see Markstrom continue to play his socks off and steal games, but pick up injuries in the process. That team's success begins and ends with the goalie and his health. Marky's done it for us in the past - now he's starting to do it for Calgary. And now Vancouver. We don't look good at all. I don't want to hear any "eventually" from you here. We are not going to somehow "eventually" get good, just how Calgary and Edmonton isn't going to "eventually" start losing. Things happen, and everyone's fortunes may change. But I would honestly rather be in their shoes than ours right now. We've just made some significant changes and taken on a lot of risk, and the results haven't shown at all.
  2. While it is true that the fans here have an awfully short fuse (I remember when people wanted players traded and coaches fired during the President's Trophy seasons), this year there are higher expectations. Picks have been traded and we are up against the cap. I would be shocked if personnel and roster survives intact if we are sub-500 going into the trade deadline.
  3. 3 points in 4 games though. And the results accurately reflect the quality of play we've been seeing. Any fanbase can tolerate a loss. But no fanbase would be happy with this start.
  4. Now we're just missing Shotgun Jake to fill out the Lower Mainland
  5. I'm looking back and I must've replied before your edit, but I dont think I'm really missing anything. My bad though. Anyways... A good team is going to have efficient scoring no matter how the lines are deployed. Our golden boy for this is Tyler Motte. He might do well if he moved up, but he belongs in the bottom six (in the best way possible). If he plays 15 minutes, you'll get good a 15 minutes. If he plays 8 minutes, you'll get a good 8 minutes. A cup team like Tampa has tons of these players. Coleman, Gourd, Colton... and Vancouver had guys in 2011 like that too (Hansen and Torres) who could bring energy to every shift. So a coach can make shift adjustments however they want to exploit an advantage. The problem here is that Green is making adjustments to hide our weaknesses but has created new problems in the process. There's a lot of people at fault here.
  6. You cannot ice your best players the entire game just so you can play catch-up. It becomes an even bigger problem when you're using this tactic every game because you're always behind. Hockey is a sport of bounces and puck luck, but the way we are playing, the Canucks deserve to be underdogs game in, game out.
  7. The greatest thing about this feud is that it has almost completely played out OFF the ice. Fans, pundits and players are all about the classic rivalries but this one is so memeworthy.
  8. Even for Djokovic he really only ramped up his game in 2011. He was an elite player who did win the AO as a 20-year old, but he really started to hit his stride when he got a bit older. The weird thing with him is that he's legitimately improved parts of his game this late in his career, particularly his serve. At this point it really seems like he has no weaknesses. Maybe that he's a slow starter?
  9. Bit of an unfair list to compare him to the other members of the stacked 2003 draft, but that is the competition he will be up against when considering HOF. Interesting to look at that roster, which is definitely hitting retirement age. Which one of these guys makes the hall? M.A. Fleury (a lock) Eric Staal (elite but never the best, 1 cup) Ryan Suter (elite but never the best, no cup) Jeff Carter (excellent international career and 2 cups) Dustin Brown (2 cups as a captain but not much else) Brent Seabrook (key pairing with Keith, 3 cups plus some gold) Zach Parise (see Ryan Suter) Ryan Getzlaf (elite player but never the best, 1 cup, lotta gold) Brent Burns (the best for a few years, but no cup and no olympic gold) Corey Perry (has won at least one of everything - a lock) Patrice Bergeron (no Bruin is wearing #37 again - a surefire lock) Shea Weber (excellent reputation but has never actually won anything in the league, but has a lot of gold) Joe Pavelski (excellent reputation and longevity but hasn't won anything in league or internationally) As you guys can see, there are probably a solid handful of players here who deserve it more than Ryan Kesler. Which really just speaks to how stacked this class was. There were a bunch of names I didn't even mention but were excellent players in the league.
  10. Truly has to be the draft trade for the twins here. Major strings had to be pulled and it's a story within itself, and the beginning of two great careers.
  11. This is a forum. I have to troll it. This thing didn't even last a whole season as both of them were traded. Just imagine what could've been the greatest tandem in NHL history.
  12. I would be very surprised if the NHL did NOT send their players to Beijing. Bettman represents ownership, and to them China is such a huge potential market. They won't be able to resist. I really don't like Xi Jinping and the CCP's approach to politics and diplomacy. But Canada is not in a very strong position to lecture other countries on how they are re-educating ethnic minorities for the purposes of wiping out their culture (and covering it up). We are in the midst of uncovering the magnitude and depth of the atrocities that occurred in residential schools. The healing process can't begin until we uncover all the graves, and until then I feel weird to point the finger at other countries.
  13. They need to trade Monahan and Gaudreau and rebuild. Keep Tkachuk for now. They cannot win with this core.
  14. We let these players walk because we could've retained them if we really wanted to. I think all of them were pretty open about wanting to stay. For some (Marky and Tanev), the UFA offers from other teams were deemed too high to match. For others (Tofu and Tony), they left because Vancouver showed little interest, and openly expressed disappointment in leaving. Their departures and an overall failure to replace them made it predictable for the Canucks to founder this past season. The whole thing has made the Canucks a giant question mark. The new teammates struggled to gel, players got sick, and our key guys (except Boeser) had a rough year. With the roster moves made, and a proper summer and training camp, I think it's reasonable to expect improvements. There should be better chemistry, the players shouldn't be ravaged by covid, and everyone should bounce back. But it takes consistency to even start being considered contenders. That doesn't happen by missing the playoffs more often than not.
  15. ah tabarnak he is da wrong type of french though! Everyone should check out Perrault's mugshots through the years. He's had some epic hairstyles. https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=89510
  16. I sometimes forget that Arrow is the resident troll of this forum. His/her hot takes are absolutely brutal. Praising Benning for every good move he makes. Defending him for every bad move he makes ("it's not his fault XXX performed poorly"). Suggesting that Quinn Hughes is expendable. Predicting Loui Eriksson to have a breakout season this past year. That's just fishing for reactions.
  17. The OP has a bizarre take. We are literally on day 2 of free agency and the fans are trying to grade what happened. That's not how things work. When it comes to acquisitions, how can you assess how good or bad the signing truly was when they haven't even played a game yet? Ferland seemed like a good signing. Eriksson and Holtby seemed like okay signings. The whole "let's wait and see" applies to Garland just as much as it does to the Poolman. Hell it's going to apply to Hughes and Pettersson when they get paid too. Let's say they both get $7 mil for however long. If Hughes struggles as badly as he did this past year, it will be bad. If Petey can't stay healthy, it will be bad. The point being that acquisitions take time to figure out if it worked out or not. Losses, on the other hand, can be assessed more quickly. Last year, we lost a lot. Markstrom, Tanev, Toffoli, Stecher, and Leivo. The loss of talent wasn't really replaced, and the team really struggled because of it. It also annoyed fans because all those five guys just walked. This offseason, we let Edler walk. Everyone else was either traded or bought out. Every single player who did poorly was unloaded. Eriksson, Beagle, Roussel, Holtby, Virtanen, Schmidt. All gone. Most of them were Benning's mistakes to begin with, but they are now gone. Even if it was partly cleaning up his own mess and at a high price, he did what had to be done. This is all coming from a pretty big Benning hater too. Jet Black Jim, Benning, I love all them memes.
  18. The perfect response to the first post. Edler did peak and decline a bit early, but he changed as a player and became an absolute workhorse - kind of like Jay Bouwmeester. Yes he lost his legs and hooked/tripped every game, but Edler was like a second goalie on the ice. This past season Edler was almost a guarantee if there was a defensive zone faceoff (smth like 70%). I expect Edler to fully earn his contract in L.A. He will trip, he will hook, and he will lumber around. But he will also hit everything and block shots like a machine. My hope is that Edler will be like Willie Mitchell and have an excellent twilight for a few more years to come.
  19. We are a team that can score far more goals but is also much easier to play against. I'm expecting a high offensive output from the whole team, and for Demko to have an inflated GAA.
  20. This is an absolutely brutal hot take. You're seriously going root against our backup performing well so he doesn't get paid the money he deserves? I would be so happy if Halak went 11-6-3 and gladly pay him the bonus. You're actually WANTING him to fail. Come on man.
