  1. Aqulini's reputation as a spender has never been in doubt. That is the last thing some fans have issue with him over.
  2. Tampa Bay is the retirement home for washed up Canucks d-men. The man can't skate to save himself and he will hook or trip everything in sight, but he is a SHOT-BLOCKING MACHINE
  3. I just don't see why Eller would want to uproot his life and spend his last playing years on a team that seems destined for a downward spiral. The ex-Canuck signings last year made enough sense but they (like us) nosedived hard. The difference between Calgary and us is that their core is in their prime and still can't get it together. You'd think he would go to an excellent team to make one last push for the cup. His legs are gone and I can't see him playing for more than two years before either retiring or joining the SEL. Either way, Calgary cannot be his #1 choice.
  4. I think he's talking about Buffon, folks. He was Italy's goalie for like 20 years (and the best on the planet for a good while), but he's way too old to play for his country now. He's 43. He's also not on the team, so where did you find that name?
  5. Has anyone ever flown out to watch either Rogers Cup or Indian Wells? When I lived out east it was a good road trip for my family. Now that I'm in Van I could fly out there again or fly straight down. I've watched so much tennis this year I want to see some live matches again!
  6. The Maple Jordan was like Reggie Miller at the end of regulation. We just got killed at the boards. Of all the bigs that could've played, only Trey Lyles was able to report. That's sad.
  7. This is true they have lost two of them already and one of them in a somewhat embarrassing fashion
  8. Funny how most people here are dismissing JT Miller. Petey probably has the most flash and thus the most swagger, but I'd put Miller second. He plays a lot like Ryan Kesler did for us.
  9. Wasn't the first canary Trevor Linden? We can speculate all we want but probably won't know what truly happened until both he and Jim Benning are well past their retirement ages.
  10. This. If the top of the class is that murky, then such a trade seems awfully risky. And if you're Buffalo or Seattle, you'd want more for a 1st or 2nd overall pick.
  11. Yeah it's supposedly part of his contract that he will be protected. Probably one of the conditions to his re-signing (weird that they didn't just give him the NMC).
  12. Supposedly there's an agreement in his new contract that Pearson will be protected. We will 90% lose a forward. The d-men and Holtby are the other 10%. I doubt Seattle's core will come from our pick.
  13. So how do you acquire a young elite core? For Benning, it should be through the draft, which has been his greatest strength. One of his biggest weaknesses has been free agency. Benning on July 1st has become a meme for neutral hockey fans. It's wild how many draft picks have quickly turned into NHL-level players. Of course, Benning has also traded away that talent at pretty low prices. Another concern is the lack of player development from the AHL. I thought Gaudette and Virtanen were going to be core players that learned a lot in Utica but they both regressed terribly this year. The only player worth noting is Thatcher Demko, where most of the credit is given to Ian Clark (who Benning might lose in the offseason). At some point you need to give Benning responsibility for more than just his successes. Otherwise I'm just gonna chalk up his good moves as being lucky. Drafting Pettersson, Hughes, and acquiring Miller? "Who knows how it would've gone?" Nobody has the great secret to winning infinite Stanley Cups. But every GM has their definitive vision towards the same goal. And they should be deservedly judged for every good or bad decision they make. If the dog ate your homework, too bad.
  14. Maybe you just don't understand what asset management is? Every transaction has its opportunity cost. When the Oilers draft McDavid, they chose to give up Eichel. When they signed McDavid to that monster contract, they probably gave up a decent depth player to the cap. Jim Benning acts like a scout. In the summers, he sees players like Beagle, Roussel, Eriksson etc. and sees talented players. I mean, that was poor scouting, but according to you that wasn't his fault either. In the winters, he sees Tanner Pearson. Do you know what most others saw? Cap room, roster spots, and draft picks. Benning has shown to be a pretty good drafter, and yet he almost never trades for draft picks. Unless Pearson absolutely ramps it up and revives his career, he is NOT an indispensable player. He was surely worth a second-round draft pick in a seller-friendly deadline. Instead he chose to re-sign, which sacrifices both an extra draft pick and a chunk out of our limited cap room. Benning works for an owner who obviously wants the team to make the playoffs each year. You speak as though Benning intended to rebuild in September. The bare minimum of a rebuild requires trading for draft picks at the deadline and showing some discipline in free agency to save cap room for the future core. Benning has never done a rebuild. "This is year 2 and by our 4th (2017-18) or 5th (2018-19) I expect that we are right there with the elite teams in the league." “The bottom line is our goal is win games and to be competitive to make the playoffs. That’s what we’re here for.” The second quote was from 2018. Benning wishes we made the playoffs 4-5 times. God knows he went into each season trying.
  15. I don't understand why you're trying so hard to craft an excuse for every single mistake he has made and yet give him full credit for everything he has done well. When it comes to you explaining Benning you only have two answers: "this is why he's great!" or "that's not his fault!" I do not like Jim Benning. Never really have. He has done very poorly in free agency. He has done very well in drafting. If he was truly as good as you suggest he is, then he would be lauded as one of the best GMs, and not one of the worst. If he was as good as you say, then we would have one of the most successful and most entertaining hockey clubs out there. You're a troll to compare us to the on-ice product of the Colorado Avalanche. Our team is extremely top-heavy and painful to watch half of the time. I could go on and on about Benning's poor asset management and poor vision. But I'm sure you have an excuse for everything. That act is exhausting and gets old quickly.
  16. Way to sidestep my response. Osaka was essentially being forced to attend press conferences or risk defaulting from the tournament. Imagine if an NHL player was threatened with suspension because he refused to do pressers. That's the stance Roland Garros took. You don't have to agree with her actions, but you have to admit that kicking her out over this was ridiculous and bullying. It also sounds like you've never watched her play or speak. You have no idea how good and how shy Osaka is as a person and as a player. So why are you so quick to pass judgment? This is some gaslighting nonsense where someone tells you they're depressed and you're basically saying "no you're not". She withdrew from the tournament, man. She is NOT bluffing.
