I don't think Spotify's shuffle is truly random. It seems to match songs that are similar so subsequent songs flow into each other. 

I've noticed this, especially on my rock playlist which is an eclectic mix of 70s, 80s, 90s. Interestingly if I skip over a few modern songs in a row, it will bias toward some of the older music on the playlist and seem to play them more consecutively.
