I like using rep points to quickly agree with a post I may not necessarily want to respond to. It's kind of like a high five, pointless, but to the point. I don't like using the negs because that doesn't foster any discussion, however, sometimes people say asinine things that a coherent counter argument either wouldn't resolve, or I can't be bothered to spend the time forming one for either the 1st or umpteenth time, ergo, neg.

@J-23 Do you play or have you played video games? Your brain is capable of triggering minute quantities of dopamine based on a reward based system. That's why some gamers like RPG's and can play them endlessly, and it's why video games are increasingly used in educational situations. The small rewards like gaining pieces of gold and XP from a fight that brings you closer to leveling activates a part of your brain that subconsciously whispers "keep going, you're almost there" even though it's 2 am and you've got school or work in the morning. That info has translated into games being effective training or education tools.

That's probably a little more deep than you were expecting, and it may not explain every instance of people getting excited about rep points, but I thought you may find it interesting.

All that said, if I woke up in the am and found my rep tally zeroed I wouldn't care, I'd just start grinding away again.

Unfortunately, the current system we have is very restrictive in allowing us to play with rep points. The options were infinite minuses or no minuses. I'd hope that the next update would give us more freedom, because minuses in a limited role seemed to be fine when we had it in the past.
