We do all understand that scouting prospects does not end at seeing a few games. They interview the guy, his coach, his team mates, school friend, teachers etc etc. They also follow up his family life and life style. They go to incredible length to check the guy out. As a rule they only get one first round pick every year and you better be right about your choice

This appeared in the Province recently "At even strength, Cull and his coaching staff often had Juolevi deployed alongside Ashton Sautner, one of the Comets’ most reliable and rugged blue-liners, facing down the opposition’s top forwards." So why aren't we talking about Sautner more, politics ? rather than Juolevi

This is what management thought he's be

As I recalll Virtanen was kept in Vcr because they felt he was not getting any help with the Hitmen and needed to get him out of that enviroment
-
Good Good point but I believe it's a case of the teams are not permitted to instruct or have then follow a work out plan
-
I always recall what Alex Burrows commented on Virtanen, "he might get it one day" and then laughed it was a summer when they were both working out in Vcr

Here's a decent review of the Tanev predicament https://thehockeywriters.com/canucks-tanev-replacements-trade-free-agency/

"Hockey Canada scouts and Sr hockey Canada coaches/management", exactly! they have no allegiance to the Canucks, Hitmen etc. I agree they don't have any impact on who will play in the NHL. The point is Woo made to the WJC invite when he was 18 but not so when he was 19 and it's a 19 year old tourney fro the most part, plus his stats were worse as a 19 year old than when he was 18 Lets just keep our finger crossed

From every thing I've read the golaies it Pitts are on their way out
-
As I understand he's been offered good coin by Pitts so he can play alongside his brother. Pitts is not going to re-sign Justin Schulz who's being paid $5mill plus a mill in bonus money, both RHD
-
Yeah numbers alone dictate that only a select few play for their country. Here's the thing, the selection is made by independent scouts who have no dog in the fight so yes it does mean some thing. Podkolzin will play as will Hogelander, it means some thing

Sadly every athlete has a plateau in some cases it comes early in their career other keep progressing as they age. Woo played well 2 years ago in Moose Jaw, and earned invite to Canadas WJC camp, he did get cut but he was invited. Last season he played in Calgary, lessor stats and no invite to the WJC camp. He's going in the wrong direction. Right now it's just fingers crossed. Who knows some thing might snap into place. I hope he graduated from High School

There again he could suffer life long respiratory problems ..... which is not good for a elite athlete

Bang on. He's just not the sharpest knife in the draw, you need to speak slowly or add pictures. Hockey players need one of two skills, innate skill's or the intellect to understand instructions. Sadly ........

You must. This isn't about now, it's about 2-3 years from now the "kids" need to be groomed for that time period. They need to get experience. Our window to be a true contender is a couple of year away. Benning seems like he's loosing his patience ( maybe pressure from ownership.) Sure it's nice to make the next play-offs but we don't want to be a one and done. Mediocrity is a terrible place to be. No high picks and no success in the play-offs. So let's get the Rafferty's Rathbone Podkoilzin Lind and Hogelander in and up to speed. It's going to be a long while before we get a high draft pick again

provocative but that's about all. We have a conundrum with the Cap if you haven't noticed And management wouldn't be doing it's due diligence if it doesn't explore all options. At RHD we have Stecher, Tryamkin, Rafferty and Chatfield ( who Benning talks up quite a bit ) and who knows there's been talk of Hughes playing the right side. They're all cheaper than Tanev. We don't have a clone of Tanev, he's been a great player and a great signing by Gillis. One other point this team is 2-3 years away from being a real contender, we just proved that. We do play without Tanev pretty regularly. It serves no purpose to let Tanev walk and then pay big bucks for a replacement, makes no sense, you've solved nothing of the Cap problem

Plus lest we forget we have an AHL All-Star RHD in Utica, I don't believe he should be considered chopped liver. They assigned him to Utica to show his stuff and more so than any other player in Utica proved himself. He had the third most points of any defensemen in AHL and the only one in the top three that was a rookie. He was O/A 16th for +/- again as a rookie. Jalen Chatfield RHD, who Benning seems to like, is 36th in +/- and 241st in points. So we do have some coverage, do we have the jam is the question. If Tanev goes I assume Stecher stays. I'd like to keep Tanev he adds a lot to the club, but long term (remember we're 2-3 years from contention,) he's likely not going to be at his peak.

I read this in Canucks corner .... a slow day
-
Stealthy for sure, it stealthed right past me

There is unlikely to be an AHL this coming season so it's going to be tough Juolevi might end up with TPS, Where Rathbone ends up who knows

That's the question, on the LHD side Rathbone or Juolevi, who ever it is I hope it's made on merit rather than politics. Woo frankly seemed to regress in Calgary

Woo I doubt will be ready for a while, he wasn't even invited to the WJC try out's. Mean time we thankfully we have RHD Rafferty who put up great stats last year in Utica, looks to me like he's more advanced then Woo. On the LHD side I tend to think Rathbone will get a long look he seems to have a complete game at Harvard
