  1. I tend to believe quickness is a big a factor as "heavy" What often fools goalies is how quick a player gets the puck off his stick. Virtanen is a good example he takes too long to make the shot, it might be heavy but it's also too often in the goalies glove
  2. He plays RW https://theahl.com/stats/player/7101
  3. There's a reason why that stat is still kept today and why insiders still refer to players as either a plus player or a negative player
  4. Frankly I would have been shocked had he not made the all rookie team. He has skills that seperate him from the "rest"
  5. Certainly IMac has credibility as does Ryan Kennedy of THN, been writing about hockey and the NHL for a long time. Both cite NHL scouts. As to sensationalizing the rift between Brackett and Benning I don't give a darn. What I do give a darn about is the fact that at long long last we, the Canucks, got something right at last ….. amateur scouting and wouldn't you know it we're going to throw it all away because of a spat. Every decent company has differences of opinion, it's healthy, you get over it and carry on! I don't like one this bit. Benning needs to have a serious talk with Brackett and at the same time remember what he was employed to do ….. to be a GM and if this is how he handles disputes, putting himself ahead of the team I'm not impressed, it's not what a manager does IMO.
  6. The Podkolzin draft pick was good in a number of ways. Drafted in 2019, he won't sign until 2021 and is on his ELC until 2024 which helps immensely with the Salary Cap. Regretfully our Cap is in a bad position signing players of limited consequence for big money and term. We should have been in a tanking position rather than looking for glory. However fortunately Vcr hit pay dirt with Pettersson and Hughes I'm sure way beyond their wildest dream. The sad part is after all this great drafting they now want to dismantle the scouting that brought prospect that were beyond their dreams. Some of this is hindsight but regretfully some was predictable
  7. Here's the part you conveniently miss. On two occasions other NHL scouts have passed comment of the Brackett situation. They have no affinity with the media or dog in the fight. I hope you're not telling folks that the other teams scouts have a desire to fabricate/dramatize the story. I have no reason to doubt their word and I seriously doubt you have reason to doubt their word. Both scouts stated that Brackett punched above his weight and did better than others in the same place. It's good enough for me unless you can find some one in a similar position to repudiate their word. Sadly the one time Aquaman should step in and tell these two to sort their difference out, seems like Aquilini is missing in action.
  8. I'd caution those that tend towards Trumpism ie all media is fake. Sports journalists are generally reluctant to publish the things they hear for fear to retribution by clubs or players etc. They have press passes and circulate amongst a sports fraternity. In this case many of the facts published have been paralleled by other more conservative journalists and backed up by quotes from NHL scouts on the inside. Burke seems willing to speak out, balancing his opportunity to become a accepted journalist to the possibility he will be shunned by the sports fraternity. It's a risk he taking. Frankly I grow tired of the journalists that talk a lot but say nothing. Burke seems to have pushed others into be more forth coming. Regretfully many fans have prejudices and are unwilling to accept facts they " don't like "
  9. How much will it cost for the play-offs. I assume they're not playing out of the kindness of their hearts so it'll be pay for view and enough to cover all the costs of players, travel, hotel, arenas and as much as the owners can gouge. Me, bring on next season
  10. Connauton needed directions to find his own end of the ice. Rafferty regardless of the merits of the +/- factually/statistically more defensively aware than Connauton if he lives to be a hundred
  11. One word Theo obdurate. Rafferty is nothing like Connauton, Connauton read it and weep https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=112494
  12. Zegras was a highly rated player and I believe any club would be happy to get him. He's already signed with the Ducks after only 1 year in the NCAA. One of the players I'm interested in seeing
  13. For a player that was ranked third over all for AHL rookies with a good +/- ( third amongst rookies) and 6th O/A in pts I don't see a good comparison with Connauton. Connauton has always struggled defensively and for the most part was a minus player during his days in the AHL. Maybe and this is streching it a bit but he doesn't play much of a physical game and admitted that himself.
  14. Unless Burke can qualify that claim I agree it's speculation. Often GM's do put out a rumour to disguise their own wish list. I don't doubt that Broberg will turn into a quality player but frankly Podkolzin as frequently ranked by many of the hockey guru's in the top 3 and certainly the top 5 by almost all the top hockey guru's, there was a consensus he was a top forward.
  15. Not strictly true. The success Vcr enjoyed during the Gillis era will take a long time to beat. Two Presidents trophy a game seven in the SC and that was in 6 years. Every game I attended you expected to win, tickets were at a premium and they had sell outs. Apart from acquiring Utica he acquired Markstrom, Horvat and Tanev and traded for Erhoff Malhotra Hamhuis, Lapierre, Higgins. Players captured personal recognition too. It was a good time to be a Canuck fan and a lot of teams were envious of the Canucks. Gillis won the the Jim Gregory award as the best GM in the league. So although the current team has hopes and aspirations for the future, it'll be a whle before they achieve what Gillis did
  16. The teams were warned ?? Heck NJ did the same as Vcr
  17. To me this primarily about timing and development. Rafferty was #3 in AHL rookies for +/- and his offence was equally good. If his defence was so bad how come the figures don't show this.I don't believe he can get much more development in Utica. As for timing, this is not Vcr time for the SC. it's still about 2-3 years away so the youngster have to polished in Vcr. It's unrealistic to believe they can just step in and excel immediately
  18. I'd have to think retroactively chnage the rules is not exactly kosher either. The Leafs capologist, Gilman has made a similar move , beyond the spirit of the CBA and the Leafs intended to repeat this again to circumvent the Cap. The thing is if Vcr had won the Cup, and they came so, so close no one in Vcr would have complained. The NHL is not an amateur organization, it's every man for himself world, plus of course as Lindros stated all teams are not equal in the NHL
  19. I think the answer to that is much like Rathbone, parties need to know which if any leagues are going to open next season. All of the following might have no season at all, NHL, AHL, NCAA, KHL, SEL and under what circumstances if they do. Such as salary cap or buy outs. Players need to play so I think most players/teams are taking a wait and see stance
  20. There's a cautionary tale there. Don't employ the guy that made those predictions, who woudl do that, Oooops I know the answer
  21. Theo, Jankoswki sucked get over it. You're sadly trying to defend the indefensible
  22. Theo get a grip. Jankowski was a poor pick. He was a surprise pick by the Flames. I remember watching that draft and every "expert" agreed that was a weird pick and it turns out they were correct. No one should brag about that selection including Weisbrod. I'm not saying it was a good draft. It could have been traded away or heck Pearson was available as well as Oilli Maata. That was a dumb dumb pick and most, your self the lone exception believed that
  23. We need to keep this rational. I'm sure Benning and Brackett don't send each other Christmas cards but they need to be seen to be doing the right thing. A lot, maybe most NHL GM's will be watching how this works out and if Benning needs another job some time in the future this will be part of his resume
  24. The Corona virus has forced chnage on the rich as well as the drones. Real estate holding will be devalued amongst other thing. His ability to negotiate loans in the future will be greatly reduced. Aqilini will need to tighten his belt, certainly not privately but corporately without question. Large corporation will fall
  25. No, Madden and his future was traded for a run at the play-offs. Probably under the direction of the owners who may well need the revenue. I'm thinking they have the Michaelis as his replacement
