  1. Mattias did and will play left wing last season IMO, the roster is short of left wingers. He did well in that role ( one of the few bright spots ) with Richardson at Centre and Kassian on the other side. Would Schroeder be able to fill the spot Richards played, I don't know. Certainly the 4th line needs some skill added to it if the intention is to play 4 lines. I recall Momeso and Sandalak ( twin towers ) looked good with Cliff Ronning. I'd be surprised if they let him go without a try out at camp...after that it's up to him if he plays in Vcr, Utica or gets picked up on waivers
  2. There seems to be a lot of poster swayed by sentimentallity rather than bottom line analysis. I have to believe Vcr think there is value to the guy either here, in the AHL or as a trade . So I guess he's a RFA who needs to be offered a minimum 10% increase over last year. I' sign him and see what he bring but prepare to send him down on waivers
  3. That's a cautionary point for the scouts, you try to give short and skilled a chance ( Schroeder was the MVP I believe in the WJC ) and if he can't translate to the same skill level he can't be used in any other position, it's all or nothing when you take short and skilled
  4. Ehlers is ranked 11th, 13th and 15th by Central Scouting, ISS and TSN. Now these guy may all be out to lunch but THEIR ranking are all based on professional scouts. Some on here may like their own abilities to spot a prospect but that's a huge body or work you're up against. Vcr does not get a draft pick this high very often so they better not waste it on a dream
  5. Here's the thing about smaller players, if they bust in the skill game...they ain't going to become a solid 3 or 4 th line grinder. So it's a all or bust situation. Linden has stated he wants the 4 line system so if there's any doubt if a youngster can hack it due to size in the NHL...it's a bad gamble. That aside all small players are not the same think of Scott Walker and frankly Shinkaruk IMO is a "gritty" style small player...similar to Gallagher in Mtl. Schroeder on the other hand....not so much http://lastwordonsports.com/2014/04/09/2014-nhl-draft-profile-8-nikolaj-ehlers/
  6. A couple of things. Hamilton sure looks good, Suban shoudn't have low bridged Thornton ( as much I don't have sympathy ...live by the sword etc ) but it rallied the Bruins for sure. Maybe the Bruins are just waking up. Memo to Gallagher ( just like Suban shouldn't have taken out Thornton ) keep your mouth shut and stop stirring the Bruins up. You do more damage than good. Price will save every thing he can see, get some traffic in front of him
  7. If Vcr drafts a "skill" player or a character player in the second round ( both will be available ) it's going to show where Linden feels our weaknesses are or what direction he wants to go in the future
  8. The debate around the draft should really be about what model or hybrid model are the Canucks heading. Where is hockey today and what bring success. The two teams in my mind is Chicago and Boston. The Chicago model is tough to follow because quite frankly they depended on years of bad hockey and there for access to great draft selections ( Kane and Toews ). On the other hand Boston did manage to build a team without bottoming out and on a few good trades ( where would Boston be without Chara or the trade that brough them Seguin and Hamilton ) So it's a toss up you either play crummy and risk fan loss to get high picks or you go the Boston route and try and build as you go. Assuming you prefer the build as you go route...what has the Boston model been founded on. Well obviously trades, which point to better than average Pro Scouts ( Vcr must be tone of the worse ) to. They have also leaned ( pun intended ) on size and strength. From what I've read Linden also has reached the same conclusion. So now not only do you decide to draft that way you need to go through the orgainzation piece by piece to enable this to happen. List your emphasis check to see if you have the peices ( under management and scouts )) to achieve this and in the next year put it into place Hey Presto
  9. McKenzie has been remarkably accurate over the years, evey now and then a team goes off the board which then throws other picks out of order. But on the whole he's pretty reliable year after year. As to the scouts .... during the period of a season it is my understanding that scouts are shuffled by their teams simply to see if their reports coincide with the scouts in a particular area. ie the Ontario scout will come out west and do the Dub & the WHL scout witl do a spell in the "Q" it averages out the peaks and valleys that would result if a scout for instance really takes a shine to one player....just as an example. So scouts although positioned in say the OHL always know and judge/report on players in other areas. It's essential all scouting lists are cross referenced. I believe this holds true for local scouts and EU scouts too. After that I'm sure the GM takes a look at thier own top 30 players and also travels to EU to look at those youngsters too
  10. Why most follow McKenzie is his ratings are actually based on polls he does with a large number of NHL scouts. He's had the inside track with these guys for a long time. I'm not sure if he has them on a retainor or they just do it as a favour but by the time hae's sifted through the conclusions he comes up with a list....History tells us he never far off and frequently spot on
  11. I can't understand with the sensitivity this clearly brings up why Chinese, Hindi or others would want to tolerate it either, it invokes clear dislike and hatered even. Why would you want to do this...as a Chinese or Hindu....it's just going to make life more complicted for yourself ?? It serves little purpose and can do considerable harm

  13. These are the play-off stats. Gaunce is putting up better numbers than Horvat., & in only behind Fox in total Pts Name Position DOB Age Team GP G A P PPG +/- PIM Bo Horvat C 1995-04-05 19 London 9 5 6 11 1.22 0 4 Dane Fox C 1993-10-13 20 Erie 9 7 9 16 1.78 7 12 Brendan Gaunce C 1994-03-25 20 Erie 9 5 9 14 1.56 8 8 Cole Cassels C 1995-05-04 18 Oshawa 8 6 7 13 1.63 4 8 Miles Liberati D 1995-06-21 18 North Bay10 0 1 1 0.10 0 6 Evan McEneny D 1994-05-22 19 Kingston 7 1 1 2 0.29 1 6
  14. Yep that was 15 years ago 1999...15 years since then we've had two 10th o/a picks ( Bourdon and Hodgson > Kassian ) and the rest in the 25 o/a kind of range. I don't believe the Canucks ever had a 1st o/a selection. Funny thing when you look back on drafts it's rare when you recall if there was a strong draft year or a weak ie you can some time ( any team ) get a high pick but it doesn't have a franchise player in the entire group. This 6th round pick will be the highest we've picked since 1999
  15. Tortorella is does not have a enquiring mind looking at new alternatives. He's black and white his way or the highway. Some thing like a train on a track, telescopic vision what ever you want to call it but considering the players we have his style will not coincide with the players he has. A woeful misuse of the talent available. He makes good players look like idiots ( Edler ) Henrik with his new found dump and chase game. After this season how can they invite him back to indulge himself and make ticket buyers watch another a boring boring season.
  16. The Vcr youth just isn't ready yet, Gillis did not try to force feed the big league to them....IMO that took guts, and his ultimate pink slip. If I read things right Vcr youth is likely ready to play some next year and some the following year. I just hope we don't wipe their careers out before it's started. Chicago is good because it s*cked for a long time & were awarded Kane and Towes 1st & 3rd ovelall, ditto Avs ( last 5 drafts the've had a 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd over all top pick...I didn't here you talking up the Avs 2 years ago ) Would Pitts be great if they hadn't won the lottery and picked up Crosby ?....remembering of course they were that bad they got Malkin the year before 2nd over all and followed the Crosby pick with Jordon Stall 2nd over all. Teams are made with draft picks and because of our success on the ice we've drafted in the 25 pick range. This from TSN
  17. If Linden sticks with Tortorella and there is a repeat of this season past, then Linden is percieved to be stupid to have allowed this to happen. Every indication is Tortorella will not play the up tempo game that Linden wants and has stated is his wish, too many insiders have stated Tortorella is a black and white sort of coach...there's only one way to play and that's his boring style. It's my belief that season ticket sales will not pick up until fans can believe their will be entertainement next season. I understand there has only been a 60% renewal of Season tickets.....and if Linden doesn't succeed who will the Aqualinis pull out the hat next time. I'm thinking Torts is loading the dogs into the van as we speak
  18. Here's the problem for Linden and the scouts....which direction is the team going forward. Is their a model that fits the core and the direction we want to go in. Is it the Bruins/Kings model that direction. If so this has to be kept in mind when making your choice at the draft. Vcr if that's the direction it's heading ( & Linden has mentioned the Bruins...and why not ! they're succesful ) then you don't follow that model by having one or two big players you nedd numerous, you need a stream of similar player jumping over the boards, which is why IMO Ritchie fits the future model Vcr is heading. I think there's still a place for Shimkaruk type players but the thrust has to be in one agreed direction
  19. I hope Kesler does stay and as you remarked he could centre a real power line with Kaasin and Matthius as wingers or God forbid if we could pick up Evander Kane ( Edler orGarrison and maybe Hansen ) it's a bold move similar to this that would turn the corner for the Canucks. We need some youth and excitement back in a weary roster of vets
  20. Does Linden continue with the bigger, faster and younger philosophy for drafting....what is Linden looking for, to be honest he was never an aggressive player in his day, more of a Cdn version of the Sedins. I think Gillis was on to something when he decided to use a more Bruins, Kings model...Detroit is no longer the poster boys of the league. I read in a SFU study made on drafting Detroit actually ranked 21st overall....Vcr ranked 20th
  21. It seems pretty obvious to me that with the extension for the season ticket deadline plus the offer for a full refund come mid july Vcr is having for the first time since Aqualinni came a problem selling tickets. Can you sell Tortorella to that base....not a chance. Tortorella is toast and they're thinking a new coach will result in new hope for next season. Appointing Linden was similar to trying to pump a stock up....these guys are desperate......but that's their problem they've made the decisions and they take the hit
  22. How about this guy, assming we continue with the bigger, faster, younger theme. What is the future of drafting going to be looking forward ? http://lastwordonsports.com/2014/04/07/nhl-draft-profile-6-nick-ritchie/ You have to like this descrition
  23. To me that looked like a team trying to get rid of the coach.
  24. I have to say I've never been a true Garrison fan...but this season he's been worse than last season....but in his defence so has every other defenseman.....that's not an accident...they were to a man happy with one on one coverage and have failed to embrace the new style. However Garrison should never have been signed in the first place, he's never been better than Salo ( even allowing for Salo maybe playing only 60 games due to injury) but brought in at a time when the team had little Cap Space and in truly bad need of a play making centre...Garrison was a poor substitute. I believe it was an attempt to shore up a bad PP and it's failed the PP is still very poor and we still need a play making centre. Garrison was a folly from the onset
