Jason Garrison potential buyout candidate
Fred65 replied to missioncanucksfan's topic in Canucks Talk
Potential man he's 30 years old this year....30 years old what you see is what you get. We have adequate replacement now and before to cover Salo. You get 60 better games out of Salo than Garrison and I see there's no comment on the glaring point we needed a play making centre. In the Cap era some thing has to give and the addition of Garrison was the error -
Jason Garrison potential buyout candidate

The closest style I have watched and is comparable to JT. syle is Freddy Shero...not the fighting intimidation etc but static hockey. Without question JT system is the most boring game we've had to endure in the last 20+ years. Garrion IMO was the worst aquasistion Gillis made, apart from his flimsy play and slap shot that takes too long to be effective.....but because Gillis signed another defenseman rather than what the team really needed a top end play making centre. We never needed Garrison ( Salo was fine ) but we were extremely short of a play making centre. I said then and I still think the same today -
I don't think he wants to ware a Spits jersey. He's a kid he decided that's it for him. Likely a good decission he's knows he ain't going any where...a back up in the OHL = lets look after my future

Here's the small detail you missed out. The NHL in it's heavy handed way changed the rules for contracts longer than ( I think 8 years ) and wouldn't allow players to retire and cancel the Cap hit. Without the "Luongo rule" beimng implemented Lou would have been very tradeable ....except after spending so much time playing chesterfield rugby with a local chick, Mrs Luongo withdrew Luo's away from home priveleges and recalled him to Flordia and Florida alone so she could keep her foot forecfully on Luo's neck at all times. Result a workable contract became a nightmare contract and Lou would only go to Florida....how do you make a trade under those circumstances. They ( MG ) hung it out as long as they could to give time to Lack. Schneider. I have to believe Gillis new he had to rebuild the team and Horvat, size, skill and character was the player they decided to make the jewel in the crown of their rebuild for years to come. I'm confident all management understood what this would mean, it wasn't done blindly or without full knowledge. The fact they got a 9th over all pick in a good year plus Matthius and Markstrom is not bad IMO. I have faith maybe misplaced maybe not in Lack, and Markstrom with the coaching of Meleanson may yet turn out to be a key piece. IMO the team has bottomed out at the base of the hill and can with the prospects they have start the up hill climb back to respectability and it should last for some time to come. Having the Sedins there as role models is very important.

Gillis record indicates he goes for size, character and intelligence find the guy that fills those parameters and you find the player they'll select

My my we do tend to get Vancouver centric don't we During Gillis regime this team has had the best record of it's entire history...go look when did the Nucks, ever winn 2 presidents trophy, and got to the 7th game of the SC all in the span of one GM...go ahead tell me. Which GM has signed more FA's at no cost than Gillis, Lack, Tanev, Stanton, Erickson and now Fox...that's like stealing draft picks Who revamped the scouting service to obtain this. One bad season in the last 5 years and every one is into hanging the guy. Just seems to play to the Johnny come lately brigade of fans who have never witnessed any thing but success. Here's a question Detroit is doing about the same as the Canucks will they hang Holland or just keep the faith and motor on with confidence knowing it's a cycle. Vcr decided...and I'm thinking by all parties Aqualinni and Gillis success in the future is going to be achieved with a different game plan...they had hope it would be seemless but it isn't, should they abandon the plan ( keep in mind the type of prospect that are in the system ) and start new or stick with it. Vct future is being built around size, speed and skill...but size seems to be a major factor of the new breed of Canucks ( look at the prospects carefully )
-
I think that's true of a couple of players including Lack & Jensen. When Vcr is officially elimanated I'm hoping one of two more players are brought up see what it takes to play in the NHL. It's good Shinkaruk is hanging around the team absorbing the dedication needed. Who knows maybe Lain is going to understand he needs to work on his skating
-
To be honest Vcr needs a player like Kassian and hopefully more of the same in the future. What surprised me was thinking back to the Garrison aquisition( Salo clearly was able to last for years ) the need was clearly a play making centre and yet we burned a lot of Cap room. If i was to point my finger I'd have to think that would be #1 on my list

There's one word for Archibalds game...vanilla. I like to think he has more to offer but at some stage he has to show it. He can't come up and dissapear or he'll end up as a full time AHL player

Why would you only judge a General Manager by trades. Why not on FA signing for instance, why not on winning 2 President Trophies and going to game 7 of the SC neither of which the 2 previous managers could do. He's literally the most successful manager ever to be with Vcr. Why just isolate trades as the deciding factor. The team I think has sold out every game while he has been the manager...owners like that. For all his years Vcr has been a prima donna team and frankly some youngsters new to the scene can't imagine what its like any other way. ps look at Detroit they're a clone of Vcr...except they're in the weaker Eastern Conference.....do you think Detroit is going to can Holland after his good years...so why can Gillis after his all his good years. This board is reactionary, tomorrow is a bridge too far

One thing Gillis likely out weighs other GM's is intelect. He may at times over estermate the value of his players and he is to a degree a players GM. But he has reorganized the structure of the organization with some success. His signing or Free Agents is I'm thinking better than most teams...this came from placing more emphasis on scouting FA's and these guy are like free draft choices. For instance the 1st round pick he gave up ( which was not good ) for Ballard he MORE than made up for with Tanev. He's added depth with the likes of Erickson, Lack, Archibald, Kenins, Lain, Fox, Costello, McEnemy. Some of his late round picks have turned out good too, Corrado,McNally, Hutton, Grenier, Cassels...to name a few and all look like players that can make it. So we can't simply paint him as the bad guy. I think if ( and we are in a rebuild ) he is likey a guy to entrust the job too. To me he's expanded the scouting and is always on the look out for thiose extra players. He courted Fox for along time and up against many other teams, flying the kid to Vcr and entertaining him....but who knows and who will remember. The draft picks he's made considering the poor drafting position have been pretty good IMO. Who'd have thought you could grab a player like Jensen at the 29th pick over all, I'm comfortable with him. I don't like all the NTC but they seem to be not as inhibitating as some like to make out. They're not NMC and some seem to mix these two up

IMO here's the problem for Hutton. He is playing in a league that only plays 32 games a season. It's tough to develop game type experience when you're not playing. It's why Tanev left the NCAA. He needs more playing time. It would be nice if they could accelerate his development by getting him into a pro type setting with lotds of games and travel, turning up every night. Is he playig against the best competition ?
-
Well right now he's sitting in the press box and Tortorella is playing Weber in his place. This guy has some to offer but he needs to show it. I just don't understand what approach he's taking...here's your chance, show your stuff...shine... but he insists on playing a sort of vanilla game. Get in some ones grill do a little pushing and shoving start some thing...lets see what you got. You're not the next Gretzky but you may end up the next Weise.

STH are not wealthy they simply budget different than many...stop drinking, cigerettes, trips to Mexico....what ever your gig is No more Lattes every time you pass a Starbucks...what ever. Sell half the games to others...work at it but don't bitch about it
-
I think the story line will be...fundamentally ..... throw your faith behind a couple of 19 year old kids and hope they progress faster than Jensen !! And there's is no reason why that will happen. Remeber Horvat just in the OHL is ranked 25th I believe and Cassels 27th...Gaunce is some place below that. These are not even ranked in the OHL as top end players and nation wide...well they will be further down the scale and secondly The Sedins have still gas in the tank for the contract which goes until 2018 I hate to be the one to break this but Vcr is going to be very lean for success for at least the next 3 years That's it. It takes 5 minutes tops to say that, but he'll strech into a 30 minute gig

I wonder if some resentment or back lash starts to build with the current Russia/Ukrain conflict. Maybe Visa restriction in the near future ? Ovechkin et al maybe go home
-
Last night he played 3+ minutes in the third period tahts says a lot. You wanna know what a coach thinks of a player see how much time he gets in a tight 1 goal game or who he has for the last shift or a period /game. But I do agree he showed more

Perlinni is actually English born in Guilford GB and moved to Onatrio when he was 13 (?) His father Fred played hockey in England and raised his family there. He moved back to give his kids a chnace to play in Canada

As we speak we're in the lottery unless I'm mistaken since the lottery was initiated this is Vcr first time to qualify....think positive
-
As it stands now we are in the lottery ? We're 22 over all. First time since the lottery system was iniated that we've made it...is this good
-
6'6" and at one time was thought of as the best goalie prospect out side of the NHL..I have faith Melanson will bring the best out in him

Luongo is gone...at last...he didn't want to be here, Mrs Luongo didn't want him to be here and in the end I didn't want him to be here. I just hope that we won't go through a period similar to the post Hodgson era when his name is raised again and again ....and agian........and again ad nausea. I feel bad for Matthias/Marksrom because they are going to be subject to lots od scrutiny by local fans who believe they're the last word in recognizing hockey talent and to revisionary ideas again and again.....

Hey Torts is Italian he's here to stay...aquaman likes thats. Gillis IMO is a highly intelligent and knowledgeable person. I think he has a plan although not made public...why would he, it's like giving other GM's a insight into who Gillis would value the most. I also think Aqualinni imposes himself more than he should ( there's no smoke without fire ) I can't think of a good replacement at this time. Vcr fans have been spoiled over the last few years since Gillis arrived and some fans don't have the stomach to handle the inevitable down cycle that follows success. Firing Gillis is not going to turn this around any sooner. The management team he's built here IMO is as good if not better than other management teams else where in the league. Hard to say this at this moment but Vcr future looks fairly bright....fans need some patience. Two Presidents Trophies and a game 7 in the SC is the best run this franchise has ever ever enjoyed. Not a popular comment but that's the way I see it
-
The rumour is Aqualinni wouldn't allow Gillis to make the Kesler trade. Why have a GM when some real estate guy do the job Linden what credentials does Linden have to run a NHL Hockey team....great guy zero knowledge about management side. He's never scouted, negoiated contracts, made a conscious effort to be involved in management....good news is he is in real esate and that seems to count

Clearly deserves ?. Appraisals by folks that don't have a dog in the fight usually get closer to the truth. Fans on the other hand get "involved" with Vcr picks and tend to loose sight of the bigger picture. Lets hope Hutton continues to develop and doesn't hit his plateau soon
