I haven't actually seen Gaunce play a lot so unless you have the posts become irrelevant really. But I have seen him interviewed a few time and what strikes me is he's intelligent and has referred to the fact...he does like to chase but he likes to position himself well. A player that can do that doesn't always need the speed that others do. Example (A) Gretzky was not a fast skater...the puck came to him
-
Remember he put up some of his points against a real weak team...don't get carried away. Cross your fingers and hope he's going to be good
-
At some point maybe Bieska should sit a game and have some time to reflect from the press box
-
I guess the good news maybe off sets the fact Santorelli may now be out for the season
-
Did any one hear Colin Campbell on 1040 today talking about Tortorella. He said that JT sent a bad message to minor hockey coaches when he went to confront Hartley ....so he gets 15 days/6 games. The players that were involved in the fracas however with fight every where only got a 60 minute suspension ( game misconduct ) what kind of a message are they sending to young minor hockey league players.....complete hypocrasy...as usual from the NHL front office
-
Yeah they could have played Lain...but they chose to give Archibald a chnace...I don't think he's finsihed by any means but he's back in Utica for a reason I'm hoping he's learning from his experience and what the out come was and hope he gets another opportunity. Frankly I posted here maybe a month plus ago I though he'd maybe replace Sestito come the play-offs. He's been sent down for a reason!! and Lain has been brought up for a reason!! I don't care who grabs the opportuinity they're given, neither are relatives of mine, me let the best man win. But one thing that doesn't fly IMO is making excuses for them...you can't run a team with excuses. If Vcr does not make the play-offs first of all it's big time embarrassing but most important they loose milions of dollars.....millions. These player understand it's business not kindergarten
-
Tell me the point and I'll try and address it. Lain has nothing to do with face offs and if you haven't heard Tortorellas plea for more "stiffness" then you don't live in Vcr. Lain is not here for his face off prowness or blue eyes or his scoring ability he's a physical threat
-
Apart from that one game I don't know if you noticed Henrik has been taking his own draws unless Kesler is there and the draw is on his strong side. Henrik as a rule does not take a lot of defensive end face offs ( Richards or Santorelli ) This not about who takes the draw...we have 3 adequate face off players, likely all better than Lain. This is about the stated Tortorella objective...getting stiffer. You can't leave it all up to Sestito we need more of that style. Archibald was given his chnace to join the NHL and play that role, if he can't handle the task it's a matter of who's next and that it seems to be Lain at this point. Burrows plays a stiff game, Kesler does but the supporting cast is soft. Think of this, which team has a softer defense than Vcr. Who on the back end plays a tough game. I hope Archibald ( who I have favoured since he was intially signed ) does not see himself like a Weise...fails to undersatnd his role on the team. I hope Archibald realizes the chnace he's been given this year, regonize his chnace and takes stock of his future and his role. Archibald can not get a name of a guy that backs down or backs off if push comes to shove....he should take a look at Nolan, we might hate him but that's what Vcr is lacking
-
The position Archibald was put in is akin to a person getting and interview for a job. That's entirely different to a person in good standing getting a annual review. We've all been to interviews and blown it...misread the thrust...what ever. Archibald was brought in for an interview and IMO completely misread the role Vcr has for him. This confirmed is IMO when you look at the subsequent choice to replace Archibald.....Kellan Lain...no more picture needed. Now if I'm Archibald I go back to Utica lick my wounds and watch to see what Lain brings and asks himself can I or am I willing to do that job. He then needs to focus and make Gillis re think or don't re-sign this summer and look for another team, it's up to him
-
There is a subtle difference between a veteran player with a history of performing and a prospect trying to break into the NHL. With the recent talk of Weise being moved out this was Archibalds chance!! ...it's all on the line and what's he do, crawls under a stone. What's he going to do in big games. Any way the facts are he failed to impress and he's back to Utica no matter what you might agree with. Lain is going to be given a chnace and if he wants stick around he better perform, this is the chnace he's waiting for.... well it's here and you better grab it with 2 hands
-
You know what coaches like.... players that are consistent. When he looks down the bench he selects player expecting them to fulfill their role. If you can't be depended on you end up else where, in the press box or another team. Archibald has a function on this team, if he can't bring the goods... he looses significance. This isn't kindergarten it's professional hockey. Fun is optional
-
No one sated it's his last chnace in the NHL.....no one !!! but he better take it the way it was intended a wake up call...you're not Lemieux anf if yopu want to hang around learn your role...in the memantime helloooooo Lain lets see if he "gets his role" may the best man win
-
Hey St Louis is a long time ago in hockey it's what did you do on your last shift.....Time and tide waits for no man and that includes Archibald
-
Well well, Archibald returned to Utica, what's this kid waiting for...the starters gun. You had your chnace and you wasted it
-
Archi me boy last night was a pop quiz in hockey terms. Sorry to say you failed. The chnace was there to show your stuff and you passed. It was clear the coach had given the players the mandate to become involved and you sat and watched, I have to say I was disappointed. You looked more like Booth than Kassian
-
Booth is blocking another player that actually cares
-
Yeah can you imagine what other players who are really trying would react...this slacker does nothing, doesn't give and dam and hey lets reward him with prime time. Yeah the guy working next to you is a AH and a slacker so he gets promoted...how would you feel....assuming you're old enough to work....that's called team bonding...shake you head Like every one else in life you earn your breaks
-
I can't help but wonder what's going through this guys head. He shows the all too infrequent flashes...which shows he can play if he wants....but to often he shows nothing. He's impossible to trade so put him on waivers and see if any one will take a gamble with him...which I doubt he's being paid serious coin and no one wants to fill that much Cap Space with such a doubtful return. I'm thinking MG doesn't want to do this as it surely shows how badly thought out the acquisition was in the first place. Miukey you got yourself into this mess...you gotta do what's needed to rectify it

I watched practise today and Booth took a full part in all drills including battle drill

Gillis silent while Canucks need him most (Bold moves my ass)
Fred65 replied to Jamaicanice's topic in Canucks Talk
NTC clauses are not added to a contract as a favour or lightly they're used to sign a players at a lower cost and hopefully give more Cap Space elsewhere. Look at Weber and now Phaneuf huge contracts that will define the future of both teams for a long time. Luongo's contract might be long and it may be a NTC but it is not onius in it's financial aspect. Luongo is paid quite a bit less than many goalies in the league. Gillis IMO is or tries to be detached amd analytical when assessing the future. I also believe his belief in his Pro Scouts is his achillies heel. Off the top of my head I'd say they're no better than 50%. The early days of his tenure he was unfortunatley conned by the league to believe they were going to head in a skill orientated league where skill came before size. Since 2011 I don't believe he has any faith in what the NHL says. Since that time there's no more Schroeders or Hodgsons. The effect of this is showing now because only in more recent drafts has he dtermined that he will draft size as much as skill. The years when he "believed the NHL direction" has set him back. This leads us to the current situation where the development of the "right" draft picks is a couple of years behind what it should be and will not coincide with the current vets on the team ie Horvat will ghit his best years after the Sedins are at the end of their careers. If we had drafted some one like Gaunce, Horvat types at the time we took Schroeder and Hodgson we'd be in a far different situation. Unfortunatley it means that out next kick at the SC is 4-5 years away when Horvat, Gaunce, Jensen, Corrado etc are in their prime. For a lot of older fans of the team that's a crucial period -
For my part to make it to the NHL you have to be good at every thing and exceptional at one thing. What makes Archibald stand out ( just a devils advocate here ) what seperates him from Grenier, Dalpe or vice versa
-
I'm thinking he is recalled towards the end of the season...assuming Vcr makes the play-offs. IMO he's a better option than Sestito in the play-offs. He's in Utica polishing his game with lots of ice time. Mind you Sestito isn't giving up his position easily. He's been doing maybe the best he's played since he joined the club

Too Early to call Kassian a dissapointment?
Fred65 replied to Go Go Canucks Go's topic in Canucks Talk
I think you're spot on with the agent, Winter, I'm not sure many in the business that are tight with Winter. Bit of an ass from all the reports I've read. But the reason for the change to Winter was the parents expected more for their son and felt the previous agent ( Don Meehan ? ) wasn't pushing hard enough. Gillis recognized only to well his team was not well matched against big physical teams, Kassian was not the only move to correct that situation. Think of Lain, Labate, Archibald, Gaunce, Cedarholme, Mallet, McEneny, Stanton and now Fox, but I'd have to say the crown jewel of that bunch is Kassian. I think Kassian may be responding to Tortorella....and I'm betting that was a big part of the selection hiring interview with Tortorella -
Lets just be happy we have a three zone big centre/winger with apprently a high hockey IQ. I have little doubt this guy is going to make it in the NHL....I hope it's with Vcr. Character type player...what's not to like. To many reactionary fans. One day a player is an all-star the next he's a bum. You gotta think a little longer term than the last game. What ever your job chances are you're better now than you were the first day you started. Most people hit their peak years late thirties early forties
