  1. Nonis came out of the NCAA and worked his way up through the ranks, he's no schmuk IMO. Smart man too boot. Burke if on no other reason than aquring both Sedins in the draft, but I think his style is outdated in todays game. A good eye but some times impulsive and retro in his hockey beliefs
  2. You think of the times Vcr has craved for a defensive RHD, we get one, or so it seems and he's like a forgotten man
  3. Oliie Juolevi, off to the AHL Charlette Checkers
  4. Welll Carson has been sent down to Kalamazoo, ECHL, has he had an injury/illness ?
  5. Right now we have a RHD playing the left side, Burroughs, so Juulsen needs to break past Burroughs first and frankly I don't see that happening, do you ??
  6. You know what I get concerned about is judging a team on it's drafting. Every year we like every other team select a number of low end prospects. The difference with Vcr is within minutes of the conclussion of the draft the fan marketers start "selling" these prospects as answers to hockey woes. It's selling hope where none exists to fans who are becoming used to supporting a losing team, year after year. What we should be judging the team on, is not draft picks, ( and the dreams they conjure up ) but the wins and losses. It's the wins and losses that count not some obscure and previously unheard of kid from the Northern part of Sweden. Have a look at Vcr draft record and seriously take a discerning look at the likely success rate. Todays record b aprt from the players taken in the top ten slots is not much different than years ago. 7. I've read through this morass of posts. The nswers all fall into the distraction and divert category. Just for the record Gillis voted by his peers the best GM in the league, not some guy in his mothers basement Won 2 presidents trophies game 7 of the SC Final, final!! Conference Champs Division champs 5 times. This record according to some is the worse era of Canucks history. Some one should shake their head Benning two visits to the play-offs And this record is apprently great. Some choose judge the team by draft selection, eh no! .... a team is judged by how much it WINS!! The firing of Gills ranks right up there with sign that great Swedish winger Louie Ericksson. The last 8 years has taken the fun out of hockey for me. Disaster after disaster. If Gillis was late to start rectifying the amateur scouts ( and he agreed to that despite bringing in Brackett ) then JB should be JB is late to rectify his Pro scouts who IMHO are terrible and keep recommending 4th line and third pairing D fr too long. As Craig Button noted, Vcr has cornered the market on third pairing defencemen. Even with scouting guru JB we have a 55% success rating with out amateur draft, and believe me this is going to get worse
  8. I believe you're way off course here. Luongo or as some would wish to call St. Lou. played fast and lose until Mrs Lou paid a surpise visit. That was the end of Lou's tenure as a Canuck. She insisted that Lou's time in Vcr was over and he'd never play here again !!! She wanted him in Miami close to her parents home and business. Gillis had a trade lined up with TO who Lou turned down on the hopes that he would be traded to Florida, which of course he eventually did. It left MG in a very poor position but he did manage to get Markstrom. Loungo was signed to a long term contract ( which both parties signed) although uncontentous with the old CBA it really riled Betteman who made sure he made his point retroactively by changing the rules in the NEW CBA that Gillis had used. It jammed Gillis up big time ( and Vcr ) At the end both Totroella and Gillis realized the team needed refreshing they'd come to the end of their day. Gillis traded Schneider for the pick which brought in Horvat, which IMO was a traded that favoured Vcr by a large margin ( Shneider not even in the league now) so Schneiders gone, under terrible stress he managed to land Markstrom and then he was fired. Nothing like out standing success to get you fired!! I don't want to bring up his one sided trades and FA signing such as Tanev and Erhoff along with Matheu Snider (great blue line but ravged by injury in th end ). I don't need to list the muscle he brought in, which stood him well in the SC run which is sadly lacking today ( different era). Naw JB will be fired because he's failed, he's had a long leash and no resitriction regarding salary ( but he scr ew ed that up too )
  9. I grasp what you're pointing out but, the Gillis succes was better than the JB success. Both had the opportunity to put their mark on the club in which ever way THEY chose. Gillis looked at his roster and decided to put his foot to the gas peddle, JB initially told us " I like this group, this can be a quick transition" Gillis plan resulted in apprently never to be repeated success while JB after 8 years is still looking for that elusive standing in the league, and that's on him! I doubt any GM will repeat Gillis long line of success. BUT FA quickly, repeat quickly, pulled the plug on him, no one does that in business while you have such a prolific successful history to your term in office, and yet FA did, he fired the successful guy and gave a long, long, long leash to the guy that has failed at almost every turn in his. I can only assume that FA and MG had presonnell difference, there's no other explanation. Fire success and reward failure
  10. I understand when JB arrived from Boston he was promoted as a draft guru. Since his arrival he's had 8 drafts of which two were traded away so that's down to 6 years and 7 picks ( two 1st round in 2014 ) Of those three were Virtanen, McCann, and Juoelvi. So actual picks that in my eye is 3 flunks and 4 winner. Or 57% success which considering all except 2 were in the top ten is not guru type numbers. Now he did luck out with Demo and Hogelander but they were both second guesses. Where teams make hay is the 1st round ( 66% success ) and 2nd round is 25% success, But that's just me, I expected better from a guru Thank heavans Brackett came in to save JB reputation IMHO
  11. Let's hope but I see the same folks in charge of the same things and likely they'll have the same results. You know what they say about insanity, keep repeat the same things over and over again but expect different results
  12. What I can never understand is those that run down the most succesful era in the franchises history. We have never had a better era. I used to leave Rogers generally happy. Now those same fans want to praise the current disaster. Seems upside down to me
  13. With Garlands quick turn about he's going to break some poor oppoent ankles just trying to keep up
  14. Here's some thing I'm having difficulty understanding. Repeatedly complaints about Gillis leaving the cupbpard bare for JB. Well when JB is eventually canned the prospects will be exactly the same. The only difference being, Gillis left after winning the Jim Gregory award ( not much fear of JB getting that!! ) but in addition 2 presidents trophies, numerous division and conference trophies and went to game 7 of the SC. If FA was so quick to pull the trigger and fire Gillis, what's the hang up now and yes the cupboard will be bare of prospects. I suspect Gillis had the kahoolies to to tell FA you're a dud and you're heading for a disaster, which turned out to be true
  15. It would seem that FA does not have a grasp on reality and prefers dreams, much like a few posters on this board
  16. What it shows IMO is an attempt to standarize a sysytem. Over time the flaws become apparent ( maybe one scout or a reverse of picks etc ) The longer the system runs the flaws deminish. It bring sense to maluable problem ( drafting ) Todd Harvey will benefit from being in that eviroment from early on, I hope. I'm sure the pre draft meetings and the conclusion of the draft are scrutinized in detail to highlight any blunders, and there will be blunders. I'm confident Bill Guerin would discuss Bracketts system prior to hiring him. Obviously he liked what he heard. Brackett was out of a job for about 10 days if I reacall correctly, I doubt either JB, Weisbrod or Green will beat that record
  17. Strange enough both Benning and Brackett both have attributes with their scouting. IMO Benning seems to me is more of an old school rink rat. Brackett wanted to put in place a concise scouting system. He wanted all the scouts to be on the same page using the same criteria. The reason they have so many scouts is simply 1-2-3 etc cannot cover every one world wide. So there has to be a system to bring all the information in a standar format to the meetings, Brackett did that, see 2:45. Thankfully the system will remain while if or when JB leaaves he takes every thing with him. Todd Harvey seems to be a BRackett convert and seems at ease in his new position
  18. I believe Petan is a good PK player, too
  19. The worse position you can be in is mediocre. You get low draft picks and never have any chnace of winning the Cup
  20. No I just see it was a continuous line of screw up that didn't need to be. Look at the current result it didn't happen just yesterday, it's string of mistake one after the other. Brackett was superfluous I guess when you're trading away your 1st round picks. The failure started in 2014
  21. They've never have show the inclination to get a long stream of success, why start now. Remember 2012, yeah that was the year that Weisbrod ( in Calgary ) went totally off board and drafted a kid named Jankowski in the first round @ 21st O/A Weisbrod is not the sort of hockey exec who young sccouts want to emulate. Brackett ACTUALLY coached Rathbone in summer hockey leagues, he to was in very tight with the NCAA and he worked as Vice President of Player Personnel for the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League. The Ice won a pair of Clark Cups in his time in Indiana. Plus the Gateneu Olympic of the Q he played in the NCAA. His credentials are sound. He was hired after Vcr let him go in a within days .... which IMO speaks volumes. Any way JB fired Bracket ( basically ) and Gilman another quality chap and he has to take responsibilty of that fact. Not to worry JB will be gome soon and we'll still be without two top hockey Op types.
  22. I thought they played well and deserved a better finish
  23. Isn't McDonough a Brackett pick, a fiend of Rathbone, who Brackett used to coach and all from the New England area?
  24. Yeah a case to waiting too long. One candidate removed from the list. Like you I thought Gorton had done a pretty good job with the NYR, John Davidson of course was quickly re hired by CBJ. Slow on the draw FA
  25. It's funny you mention the ESHL () I was thinking about a game I watched years ago, Mtl v's Nordique, at the old Mtl forum.Talk about intense. My brother and I sat in the 1st row in the corner. It as wild and exciting. Fans were totally engaged. Todays game is a watered down version of what the NHL once was. Many of todays fans have no idea of the way it was. It's about the US market, suburban house wives, and growing the TV audience and little to do with the game. Man games at the old Queens Park Arena when the N.W. Bruins were there under the tutelage of Punch McLean were exciting. There was a scouts room at the end of the arena absolutely crammed and full of cigar smoke, Al Arbour was in the middle in his racoon skin coat Not the same. At Queens Park there was a fan who brought a rubber chicken and had it on a fishing rod, so he could reel it in fast
