Has anyone ever asked that question regarding Ben Hutton? I'd beg to differ that Tanev is "better than most defenseman in the league" at playing defence. A guy guy like him is nice to have, sure, but, as far as being atop the depth chart at RHD and/or half of the #1 pairing, I wish the Canucks had another option.

What is to reconsider? He adds no secondary scoring. That's a continual issue for this team. He's decent, sure, but, too invisible to be considered a legitimate top pairing guy. The feedback from the WC's is nice, but, that hasn't moved me enough to change my opinion of the guy as a top-of-the-depth-chart RHD. Which, I see him as on this team only by default. In fact, I'll take it a step further: his coming-out WC performance should've provided GMJB the perfect opportunity to kick the tires regarding the situation in MTL this summer prior to their #76's NTC kicking in on July 1st. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. I don't know. But, I'd be severely disappointed if Bergevin and Benning did indeed have that talk and fail to agree on Tanev as the centerpiece going the other way. If he can add assists and goals to his repertoire and become as effective in the opponent's zone as his defenders at this board argue he is in his own, then I'd come around. But, until then, as armchair GM I'm still concerened about the lack of secondary scoring and how his name keeps surfacing when thinking up schemes to rectify that sooner than later.

I agree. That goes for whomever Benning adds to the top-6 at LW. Baertschi showed improvement this season, sure, but those who have him penciled-in at LW on the 2nd line next season are nuts. Really hoping Hartnell becomes a Canuck this summer, but, it'll take more than "peanuts" to make it so. CBJ won't just give the guy away. Torts may not appreciate him, but he's still productive. Better him than either E. Kane or Nash.

Actually, it's Kareem. But, thank you for sharing. Look, there's really no way to determine such a thing, as no one particular player dominates the NBA record books in the same way Gretzky destroyed the NHL's. Plus, it's virtually impossible to rationally compare different players from different eras and figure out how any of them would've fared outside their own. But, it's like Isaiah Thomas said last week; when it comes to the discussion of the greatest ever, LeBron is definitely in the room.

Not if DeRozan, Biyombo and Lowry all leave within the next year. Highly possible.

Almost. Great play, sure. But, no sense in wasting suds over it.

They can witness it, but that doesn't mean they acknowledge it. I can't ever remember a pro athlete as accomplished as he is who is held to such a double-standard with regards to expectations. If he has one off-night and his team loses - even in the regular season - his entire career resume is deemed fraudulent and his legacy called into question as a failure. Seriously, have you ever seen anyone else subjected to that? Meanwhile, Curry has a phenomenal 2 season run and is suddenly the best shooter in the history of the sport?
-
People - his haters, particularly - have grown so accustomed to seeing him perform at this level for so long that they take it for granted and really notice only when he doesn't. It'll probably take them another decade to finally come around and witness.

I think the same could've been said of Biega before his contract extension, no? Then, Granlund shouldn't have any trouble disposing of him for the job in training camp, right? We'll see...
-
Need to see him beat Zalewski for the job first before I get excited. Actually, I wouldn't be upset if they both made the squad in that 4th line C role, but, it's Zalewski who I've got my eye on.

Meaning: Hansen has veto power. Armchair CDC GM's sure do love trading players with a NTC. Particularly those who've shown zero indication they've even considered waiving it.
-
But, at this stage of his career, has he been as productive --- even over the last 3 years --- as, say, Scott Hartnell? For whatever reason, Hartnell found himself in Tort's doghouse this season, but, the guy is still solid for 50 points. Can the same be said of Burrows? There's enough young talent among the forwards to make it interesting enough for Columbus to listen to an offer, assuming Hartnell would waive his NTC. If so, would you still REALLY want Burrows taking up space in the top-6 if Scott Hartnell were on offer? Surely, you don't mean to imply Burrows deserves another shot with the twins, do you? And, do you really want a player with a $4.5M cap hit on the 4th line? He has to be bought out. Sorry. Don't feel too bad for him, he'll catch on with the playoff team of his choice. But, I just can't see a GM actually giving up anything to get him via trade. Just like Higgins.
-
You forgot to list even 1 reason why Hansen would waive his NTC. You also neglected to list GM's you believe would trade for Alex Burrows rather than wait for him to be bought out if they want him so bad.

But, realistically, if we're talking about the bottom-6 --- and, let's say for argument's sake Benning magically adds much-needed veteran depth to the top-6 --- the only rookie forward in danger of being rushed next season would be Gaunce, assuming he makes the club in training camp. Personally, I'm hoping he beats out Archibald and Kenins and holds down that LW spot on the 4th line. I think that's more of a safe bet and a more practical use of young talent than plugging/rushing Horvat and Baertschi onto the 2nd line, where the drop-off to the remaining 2 lines would be more of a question mark. It won't kill Gaunce or the team if all 3 of the aforementioned develop and provide youth and depth in the bottom-6 next season. Again, assuming Benning adds veterans to the top-2 lines.
-
I agree. If he's not good enough to play in the top-6 anymore --- the Sedin line, specifically --- there doesn't seem to be a shortage of pups who can duplicate his current level of production in the bottom-6 for far less money than what he's owed. As far as trades --- not that I believe any GM would actually acquire him through one --- maybe AV'd take him in New York. I bet he'd end up there after a buyout, for sure, though.

Not once have I ever looked at Burrows and thought "leadership". "Hard-working", sure. But, leadership? Really? Personally, I don't think there's been much of that here since Linden was active. I'm serious. But, I guess it all depends on one's personal definition of the word.
