Meh. Another retread. Why not AV then? Same difference in 2022-23. Best to keep your eyes peeled for a younger (than Crawford and AV) veteran NHL bench boss who hasn't yet reached retread status. And, possibly with a Pittsburgh connection. That rules out Johnston (mid-60's, plush WHL Portland gig), but maybe not Bylsma entirely, even though he's currently the Kraken's AHL guy, I think. Regardless, no way is Yeo the long-term answer. I don't see it.

I’ve never given any indication in any of my comments since this has been a hot topic over the last 2 seasons that I’m “anti-Miller”. But, I definitely have a higher bar of what I think “leadership” entails than others might have. Miller is definitely a “franchise cornerstone” (Benning-speak), but, try as he/they might, the Vancouver Canucks haven’t had a true “leader” since Trevor Linden, if you ask me. As far as I’m concerned, he set the bar massively high in that department, and no one - including Henrik - has come anywhere remotely close to matching it.
-
I don’t think they really have any “leaders”, though. Certainly not amongst any of the guys from the last 2-3 years who aren’t here now. MAYBE Beagle. I think he’s definitely a “locker room guy” and why he was brought here in the first place. And, I think the change in Edmonton is down to 2 words: Dave Tippett. Same with the change in Calgary: Daryl Sutter.

Has Miller ever brought in “a pretty big haul” the 2 times he’s been traded already? As you said, “he’s an impact player”, but, he’s not a game-changer an NHL GM would bet the house on in a trade. I don’t think he’d fetch anything more substantial than a pretty big haul of bottom-6’rs. And, I can definitely see GMJB getting fleeced if he dealt him in desperation. MAYBE the Canucks would luck up and get a hidden gem of a prospect amongst them in return. But, that’s a pretty big “maybe”. Having said that, the Canucks are absolutely an even worse team without him. Because, if this truly is “Bo’s team”, that’s not really a comforting thought.

As it relates to Miller, where YOU see selfishness - you mentioned it in multiple comments, along with some weird talk about decoys or whatever - I see a guy who gets after it trying to make something happen. You also seem to imply Miller-the-alpha is somehow hindering E.P.’s development. I normally avoid any talk about player salaries, but, in E.P.’s case, he’s not getting paid to be passive-aggressive like this. That’s got absolutely nothing to do with anything J.T. Miller is doing. Maybe, much like a pitcher getting shelled the second or third time after breezing through or even dominating the first time facing an opposing lineup in a baseball game, the rest of the league has simply figured Elias Pettersson out. It’s HIS obligation and responsibility to the team to work past it without anyone having to hold his hand.

See, this is what irks me. You listed 4 ex-Canucks and immediately added them to the “leadership group”. But, anyone paying attention to this team over the last decade would never accuse Edler nor Tanev of being “leaders”. Not if your personal definition of the word includes rallying the room. Which, it should. Granted, no one registered at this board is in the room, but, just based on outward appearances alone, Edler and Tanev weren’t alpha nor vocal enough to be “leaders”. I bet they still aren’t with their new organisations, either. I mean, CDC’rs seriously include Troy Stecher as a former part of the Canucks “leadership group”? What could they possibly be basing THAT thought on? I’ve been listening to the guys at 650 scratching their heads trying to figure out what this team’s identity is. But, the reality no one is facing nor mentioning is that the Vancouver Canucks haven’t had an identity at all, post-AV. When he left, it was the end-of-an-era that they’ve spent a few years short of a decade in a tailspin trying to recapture. That’s got little-to-nothing specifically to do with the loss of Tanev, Markstrom, Edler, and, especially Stecher. In fact, I’m of the opinion that even though Stecher is the only recent ex-Canuck not-named Tyler Toffoli whom they truly could use, and maybe even need right now, in no way is his absence in the room a contributing factoid to their current malaise. He’s not THAT vital. The Canucks still really didn’t have any noticeable identity or hockey culture even when they were all here. Other than that of magicians who fooled you all in the bubble into believing that this team had finally turned the corner. I’m genuinely shocked and awed that so many people who follow this team actually believed at the beginning of this season that they had “enough” on paper to compete. I’m honestly wondering exactly what paper they were looking at.

Torts lucked into a plum job with ESPN. Like Melrose, I think we've seen the last of him behind the bench. But, Babs is available. The question is, would FA spend what it'd take to get him and the much-needed new GM for him to work with? -

Perhaps it was his warrior-like play that led to his annual IR stints, and, ultimately made him too risky for a contract extension. But, he's definitely playing for the right coach now in Calgary. I wasn't in favour of him getting an extension as a Canuck, but, I'm certainly happy for him now playing for Sutter. Even if it is in Calgary. -

Hopefully, not another 1st-time NHL GM and former AGM. It was embarrassing listening to/reading Canucks fawning over his tenure in Boston as if HE was the architect of those teams.
