Great post with useful info Thx

Ahh. Yes. Thanks. Ya so giving CBJ something in return would get him 8yrs. Either way. gotta pay something to CBJ if he wants to sign 8 years. I'm sure more than a few teams will be willing if term and money is all that matters at the end.
-
IF the term is 8 years it can only happen by trading for his rights.. Otherwise 7 years max for UFA.. I'm pretty sure you aleeady know that.. other teams might be willing to give something to CBJ so Panarin can get an 8 year deal.. maybe that helps bring his cap hit down a bit too. Obviously Panarin would prefer 8 yrs over 7. Get more money in his pocket. Edit @mll pointed out GET THE APP Karlsson can't sign 8-year extension until after trade deadline by Josh Gold-SmithSeptember 20, 2018 1:52pm Brandon Magnus / National Hockey League / Getty If Erik Karlsson wants to ink a max deal with his new team, he'll have to wait a while. The superstar defenseman cannot sign an eight-year contract extension with the San Jose Sharks until after the 2018-19 trade deadline on Feb 25, according to a CBA rule unearthed by The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun. LeBrun cited page 285 of the NHL-NHLPA agreement, and specifically Rule 50.8, subsection (b) (iv), which states: An SPC with a term of greater than seven (7) years, provided, however, that a club may sign a player to an SPC with a term of up to eight (8) years if that player was on such club's reserve list as of and since the most recent trade deadline. With respect to potential unrestricted free agents only, the ability to re-sign a player to an SPC of eight (8) years expires when the player becomes an unrestricted free agent. With respect to a player who becomes a Group 2 restricted free agent, a club may sign such player to an SPC with a term of up to eight (8) years provided such player was on such club's reserve list and/or restricted free agent list as of and since the most recent trade deadline.

[Report] Leafs shopping Marleau
WHL rocks replied to Generational.EP40's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
That's interesting information. Did he say how it's split ? Is it 50/50. Usually all bonuses are paid July 1st.. So is 50/50 that means the new team will be paying him 2.75 instead of 1.25. Still not too bad. I still don't think it'll cost a 2nd rounder to move him.. adds a little more ask from the team taking him tho. I'd rather have Marleau at 2.75 over Schaller at 1.9 we paying him next year again.. -
[Proposal] VAN-TOR (Weaponizing Cap Space)

@The Lock Exactly on point and great example about LE.. Puts things in perspective for Canucks fans. Loui has 3 years at 6 mill cap hit remaining. And he makes 9 mill total over those 3 years. Would we pay Gaudette or Virtanen or Juolevi or our 2nd etc. to move his contract ? Heck no.... Marleau has 1 year. 1.25 mill salary. That's like almost minimum league salary. Why the heck would anyone pay so much to move him. Late round pick and/or a 2nd tier prospect who may or not make the NHL 100 games played club is all it costs. We paid Tim Schaller 1.9 mill to sit in the press box all year last year and will again next year. Marleau at 1.25 mill is a problem? I don't think so. In COL imagine a Sedin went there last year for 1.25 mill. That's Marleau. A Sedin at end of career. -

Yes we will. And I'll say this now. If JB can get a 2nd rounder or Kapanen or Dermott or anything remotely close to that I'll buy you 2 tickets to a Canucks game next season. Cheers. -

I understand your sentiment. However GMs have relationships around the league. They've been involved in hockey all their lives and are friends for decades. Shannahan is the real power holder in Toronto. Not Dubas. Shanny can make one call and have Marleau traded within an hour at even value. No doubt about it. Dubas has built relationships around the NHL as well and in this case he doesn't even need Shannys help. This is a very minor issue. Not a big deal at all to trade Marleau. -

We are not the only other team in the league. They don't need a favour from us. Actually the favour would be to us if they gave us Kapanen or a 2nd rounder to take Marleau. They can trade him to a number of teams for nothing close to that. Datsyuk went to AZ as a cap dump. His cap hit was 7.5 million 3 years ago. So like 8.5 mill today. It cost DET the 16th overall for AZ 20th 53rd over all + Joe Vitale. So AZ took on Datsyuks 7.5 mill cap hit to to move up 4 spots in a draft AND they gave up the 2nd round pick to move up. What if Datsyuk wasn't involved. Just to move up 4 spots they would give up pretty close to what they gave up. Maybe the same package even. AZ has lots of cap space. No issue to take on Marleaus contract what so ever. Marleau might just retire after the trade. Then AZ wouldn't even have to pay his 1.25 mill salary. They get a extra late round pick for nothing. Why wouldn't they do that I don't think Dubas needs JB to do any favours for hi. with Marleau. Maybe something else later but not with this. -

Some of the posters are asking for a lot just to take on Marleaus cap dump.. like top young players. Kapanen or Dermott or multiple picks?? Not in a million years it costs anything near that. Even the OPs proposal of a 2nd is too much. But at least it's not outlandish. Reason being.. Marleaus salary is only 1.25 mill next year. A team like COL or ARZ would take him to have a veteran like him in the locker room just to help the kids grow. Salary cap is not an issue for many teams. Especially COL or AZ. He'd be perfect in COL imo and have a chance at a deep run next playoffs. July 1st Leafs owe Marleau 3 mill signing bonus. They'll pay that and trade him. After that his salary is only 1.25 mill. I'd say a 4th or 5th round pick and/or a 2nd tier prospect is all it costs to move him. It's not a huge deal. I've said this would happen for the last 2 years. Not hard to predict after looking at his contract. -
How far train ride is Mannheim from Frankfurt. I've been to Frankfurt several times. Last time about 15 years ago. Used to travel thru there and stay for night or two.. Lufthansa hub city.
-
Apparently Ghost might be available from Philly. He's LD though. Plus small body.. we already have enough of those. Great contract. Didn't have a great year last season but he's a very good offensive Dman. Cost will be too high for JB tho. I'd rather he try to go after Trouba IF Trouba agrees to an extension.

Who knows. Tied series lots of basketball to go. Durant might be back at some point. Raptors had a chance to win this game but just came out dead to start 2nd half. -

Raptors stopped playing in 2nd half. 11 - 0 run for GS Horrible start. -
Ya it's been working well last cpl years. I expect same strategy to continue. They can always trade later for size or positional needs. Best thing to do is keep accumulating top tier talent for now... When need arises a young skilled forward could be traded for a young Dman or vice versa.

NBA was way more physical in the 80s and 90s. Very different game now from when I watched it growing up. -

That's because a Canadian team is in the NBA finals and not in NHL. Switch the Raptors with Leafs and it would be other way around.. That's why I always cheer for Canadian teams in hockey. Playoffs are way more fun with Canadian teams playing.. -
Couple days ago i was watching a Canucks draft meeting video. Canucks had Q Hughes ranked 3rd last year. He fell to us way after that. Never know what's going to happen at the draft. Trades , off the board picks , players drop etc etc Too hard to predict but Canucks have been prioritizing speed, skating and skill last cpl drafts.

[Report] Leafs shopping Marleau
WHL rocks replied to Generational.EP40's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Actually thats not correct. Datsyuk was 35+ contract just like Marleau. That's why Datsyuk was traded. ARZ ate the cap in exchange for flipping 1st round picks and a 2nd round pick also went to DET. Wings got out of Datsyuks cap hit.. Doesn't matter about cap relief in ARZ. The contract was designed to be moved in year 3 so Leafs could get cap relief. Once he's traded he's off the Leafs books. They sweeten the pot for acquiring team to take on the cap hit. Like I said Marleau gets 3 mill on july 1st which the Leafs will pay and then trade him. He'll have 1.25 mill pay for next season. Team acquiring him is only paying 1.25 mill if he plays. Team that takes him is taking on his cap so leafs can get out of it.. -
But the cost for acquiring Jack Hughes might be Bo. Who does Jack distribute to then.

[Report] Leafs shopping Marleau
WHL rocks replied to Generational.EP40's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Let's see. Maybe he thinks he can get to a contender at TDL and have 1 more chance at a Cup. Other wise he'll be 40 in September. He's made a lot of money. 1.25 mill is all he'll lose if he retires. Take out taxes plus agent fees etc. He's leaving around 600k on the table. So it's definetly not the money that will keep him playing.. Maybe he thinks he can get one last chance at a Cup.. If he can get lucky and end up in COL then I can see him playing for sure. A young , fun, up and coming team which has a good chance to go on a run in next year's playoffs. October is a long time way. Lot could happen. Maybe he even finds his way onto LTIR somehow.. -

Yes. Retire as in Datsyuk did. His rights go to ARZ but he retires because he doesn't feel like playing in ARZ for 1 year to end his career. He'll make 1.25 million to play the season and he'll be 40 yrs old when season starts. I'm not sure he plays. So Leafs pay his 3 mill bonus on july 1st. Move his rights to ARZ and he retires. Leaves 1.25 mill on the table.
