Clay's Canucks Commentary - November 2020 (vlogs)
Solinar replied to Canuck Clay's topic in Creative and Media Forum
I hope that we see some upward movement in our prospect pipeline, where the players push for jobs on the main team. I really like Rathbone, Juolevi, Hoglander, Podkholzin, and DiPietro. I think that they are not only potentially NHL players, but are actual top 4 defensemen/top 6 forward/NHL calibre goalie. I know, I could be projecting, but these guys have show better than we've seen from any guys not graduating directly to the team in a long time. I look at our player development system, and actually see replacement players on the way, and that is something we haven't really seen in a ...well, forever. And god knows, in order to take that next step to contender status, we're going to need that pipeline to actually push out players that have an impact on the lineup.- 31 replies

I understand where you're coming from, and in some ways I agree. But I think maybe we are looking at the team from slightly different angles. I still see us as 'building' but not necessarily rebuilding. We have a lot of role players, and quality youth that have gained valuable experience. Instead of trying to figure out the framework of a team from a rebuild, we have a team that has some distinct quality, and what we're looking for are some of our youth to step into open roles. Some of that is because of actual roster need because we are deficient in some roster spots because that's where we are as an organization building. Now, would we be in that crunch without some of those 'role' players on contracts that overmatch their contributions...probably not? We'd address some of that by upgrading via UFA. BUT!!! The better teams build thru their draft and player development pipeline, not thru UFA. But even with that, they still do function to insulate and mentor other players, and into that role, I thrust Hoglander, Podkholzin, Juolevi and Rathbone in particular. Tho the addition of Hawyrluk is interesting, as he kind of performs the role of Leivo ....potentially. But if you look at the way the team is built, most likely, we have an opening on left wing, and an opening on LD, with the opportunity for youth to compete for roster spots against vets. We will probably not be as good as last year, in some respects, but I do believe what we have is the team that is going to build forward into the team we hopefully will see as a contender in 2-3 years time.

What is the point of having a prospect pipeline if we don't use the prospects we have to fill the holes we get because of UFA and the flat cap we've been saddled with, not to mention the Luongo penalty that only we have to suffer. We have our top 4 d-men, Hughes Myers Edler Schmidt, with Juolevi, Benn, Rafferty and Rathbone to fight it out for the bottom pairing. Not to mention the fact that we can dip their toes in with a strong top 4, and hopefully one of the lot will prove to have the ceiling high enough to replace Edler. As for at forward, we have Hoglander, Lind, and Podkholzin coming in next season at various points. We need room to actually get these players in, and they look like their at least middle to top 6 quality players, on ELC's. Next season we have Baertschi, Sutter, Edler, and Benn off the books, as well as Roussel, Eriksson, and Beagle on their last year. Ferland might also be on LTIR for the rest of his contract, so....things aren't as dire as they look. We have some legitimate NHL quality players in our prospect pool, not players who'd be a stretch to be on the fourth line, like we've had for so long. At worst some of these players are middle six forwards, or bottom pairing defensemen.....which means they are NHL players. At best, players like Hoglander, Podkholzin, Rathbone, and Juolevi, just for instance, are capable of being in the mix for either top six or top 4. And there are other players who can project to fill in positions lower in the lineup. That's a great thing, which will allow us to have a constant stream of people to fill in as well as the luxury of being able to trade role players with 'intangibles' to other teams at the TDL and recoup draft picks/prospects that way. Every year, at TDL, it is a surprising return for 'role' players. You start being able to churn those responsible players out, as well as hitting on higher tier players with various draft picks, you have a constant stream of lotto tickets (draft picks), as well as a way to cobble together trade packages to fill in areas of concern. Benning may have his flaws, but the one thing we are seeing is that at least we aren't bereft of talent in the system. So, I for one, am content with not acquiring more players, and starting to use the ones we have. Develop them, hone their strengths, shore up their weaknesses with either training, or playing with the right types of players to fill out a line with synergy, and hopefully get enough together that we can use that system as a strength to not only keep contracts reasonable, as we aren't forced to hold on to players because we don't have replacements, but to form actual hockey trades from areas of strength.
-
There is the possibility that with no news at the moment, it is because tomorrow is the draft and we don't pick in the 1st or 2nd rounds. Trades being dropped during the first round would be good for the fans. And provide some excitement. Especially if we could land a first with someone. But, that's just the entertainment value I guess.

[Discussion] ditching Eriksson plus others
Solinar replied to Provost's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Looking around the league, there are 3 teams that could take some of our guys and actually be better off for them. Buffalo, New Jersey, and Ottawa. Especially Buffalo, who doesn't have more than 4 forwards locked up for next year. And aspirations of making the show being a must. They could use some of our 'little things' when it comes to on ice culture and defense. Sutter-Roussel-Eriksson and Demko for Ristalainen and a 2nd and let's say, Tage Thompson. Then we turn around and do a swap of Virtanen for Domi. and then we can sign a capable backup. Now, I don't really want to do any of these, but, it would be interesting in an NHL 2020 kind of way. -

This broad stroke, one size fits all, solution is tone deaf, and causes damage to a minority, because of the optics of the situation. Some people need larger doses of pain meds to function. It isn't in their heads, they are legitimately in pain. Just because people don't want to do their jobs properly, and actively fight for their patients rights, and their own right to prescribe properly, doesn't mean that people should suffer. Too many people phoning it in has led us into this mess.

This is the 2nd time in the last 2 games where you see the team take the lead, and let their foot off of the gas. We aren't built to just turn it on, or to stifle successfully for a long period of time. We are a team that will win only as long as we are working, for a full 60 mins. But if we can find a way to do that, to just continually pour it on, I think we shall see a lot of success thru the season. As for our D-corps play last night, it is starting to look like the sum of all those parts, might just be something to be in favour of. Especially with Tanev playing regular minutes beside Hughes and actually putting up points. This team is going to be a lot of fun to watch, win or lose, this season, if they play like they can. I hope I'm not the only one really excited for this season!

[Waivers] 30 players - Sept. 23, 2019
Solinar replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I'd rather have Sutter than Gudbranson, every day of the week. And I was against the Sutter trade from the start of the rumour of it. IF anything, this teaches us that sometimes all those scratch lotto tickets that are draft picks are as volatile as some of the gambles you make on prospects in other teams systems. Plan accordingly, and learn from the mistakes for next time. -

You have to play them, and if you put them on waivers the team that had him last gets first dibs and can roll them down to the AHL, I believe. -

[Waivers] 37 players - Sept. 22, 2019
Solinar replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Hey, he laid down the beats and dropped the bass for the after party! -
Here here! It was my biggest concern with our acquisition of both players. Players who dominated at lower levels because they were bigger, stronger, faster than their peers. They didn't have to develop much in the way of hockey iq, because they could bull their way thru it all in the beginning. With time, maturity, and support, hopefully both will be able to get past all of that, and hit their niche, tho they will never be the Bertuzzi's that people would dream for. The mythical unicorn that is the proto typical power forward is exactly that. As to the question posed, there have been some excellent 'grit' that has gotten to play with some of the league's top talent all the way thru the leagues history, tho I love Semenko with Gretzky. And Mario Lemieux was so talented, he literally used his linemates as pilons to knock pucks in on bank shots.

[Rumor] Boeser Camp Eyeing 4 Year Deal Worth $28M
Solinar replied to buddyguy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Agreed. The player wants to get paid what his comparables are, not what some guy sitting on his couch at home thinks will be fair. I can say that, for most everyone here, you do a job, you do it well, and the market for your services is x, you aren't going to settle for y because a guy not in the area you work in thinks that it would really work out better for him for you to get paid that much. Give your heads a shake. Now is the time where JB needs to get it together, negotiate as well as he can, then make the move many of us know is coming, which is either Sutter, Tanev, or Baertschi out for a pick or waive eligible b-grade prospect. -
[Rumor] Boeser Camp Eyeing 4 Year Deal Worth $28M
Solinar replied to buddyguy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
If it is a 3 year deal, see it come in at 6.5 cap hit, but raise up to over 8 in the last year, making that the start of his negotiating point for his next contract. -
Well that escalated. As for the bust label, he's an NHL player. There are some first round picks, even high ones, that don't even get that far. I don't think that this is best for his career, but now am curious as to what he was being offered that the situation became this extreme. I'd rather play in the NHL than squeeze a few dollars more playing in a different league. But who knows...

Clay's Canucks Commentary - September 2019 (vlogs)
Solinar replied to Canuck Clay's topic in Creative and Media Forum
Countdown continues as we are finally out of the dog days of August, and the time we've been waiting for all summer is almost here! New line combos, new players, exciting prospects here to try sneak their way onto the big club, and the big club with nail biting decisions if that happens. There is the nervous tension of the waiver wire, and seeing all of those players either get grabbed or luckily get thru. I'm waiting to see which winger shows the best with Pettersson and Boesser (yes, he signs before training camp and we all rejoice). Will it be Ferland, or will Travis Green's whipping boy, Goldobin, finally snatch it to keep, after a summer working on his cardio and his shot? Will it be JT miller as the winger with Horvat, or will Eriksson be coming in, hot and heavy to prove that not only is he a canuck, but has the stones to put the past behind him, and be the forward we need? If Miller gets pushed down, will he be the 3rd line centre that can drive offense and possession that he seems to be, and who are his wingers? Will a 3rd line of Baertschi, Miller, and Virtanen put the opposition back on their heels and make the choice even harder about who matches up with whom? Does our fourth line become the most expensive in league history, with a possible combination of Sutter, Beagle, and Eriksson? Oh, and we want to see Markstrom be lights out for a whole season, our D actually start to find the net with shots while keeping the puck out of ours. Here we go, everyone, lets get ready to be excited!!- 41 replies

Step 1, alienate a vocal fanbase with a large internet presence step 2, get them going on twitter or whatever step 3, go to the boss, see how much traffic I'm generating, I'm a good employee step 4, rinse and repeat.

I could have sworn this was an exact sound byte quote given last year and the year before that. Someone should make the guy do a reboot and install updates.

Should canucks hire a english/russian speaking assistant coach ?
Solinar replied to Nurnge's topic in Canucks Talk
Plus, there is the thing of being able to socialise with someone who can understand you. Being around people all the time that speak a different language, even when you are learning, helps you learn, but it is frustrating and kind of makes you feel alone. With no relief from that, you can kind of spiral. Not saying everyone is like that, but I think a few of the guys who've gone thru the organisation have spoken of that before. Make sure to not only surround the player on the ice with the things that he needs to succeed, but take care of your investment off the ice as well, to a certain degree. -
Should canucks hire a english/russian speaking assistant coach ?
Solinar replied to Nurnge's topic in Canucks Talk
Having a person on staff to translate and make sure that directions are not only understood, but why someone is having trouble catching on, could only help. Doesn't necessarily have to be an assistant coach, but whether you sign a respected free agent of that nationality, or hire someone to be with the team in a capacity that would help, can only do good. Probably good to have people down on the farm team with the same job title, so that our scandinavian guys don't get so frustrated and bolt all the times. -
This should be more of a learning tool for how to properly use a player. We are obviously not using Sutter in a way to incur success. You can say injuries, etc, but his play across his term here hasn't exactly lived up to the hype of being the Foundational player he was said to be. The warning signs were there in Pittsburgh, they are here as well. Doesn't mean he can't be a decent player, doesn't mean that he can't play a role, just that maybe the role he is being used in right now probably isn't good for him, or for the team. I wouldn't mind him being switched to wing and see what he can do. He is not a distributor, but he can probably be an effective option to match up with face offs, as well as provide support for a developing center....

Well, that took out the profit margin for the first 2 months of this year....good thing they have 10 other months to shore things up. A fine along these lines doesn't send a message, it just becomes part of doing business, and a write off in the long term. Slap on the wrist, this is barely a tickle with a feather. Gutless, pandering, unintelligent cowardice is what this is. If they wanted a dent, they would have hit this company for a fine that would have totalled the profits made over the last decade, and I'm betting that would have been enough to at least send a little bit of a message.
