  1. This 100% I'd say we wasted 2 years 'rebuilding on the fly', and 'win with the twins' Trevor was in charge of the overall franchise direction, so thats on him. This does not absolve Benning for some of his bad signings trades at the time.
  2. Myers has had some bad stretches, but lately he's been one of our better D men This thread is just badly 'out of step', and owing to the current situation, asinine to start pointing fingers at one player.
  3. There has been a lot of talentless Canuck squads over the years, and this isnt one of them.
  4. This is correct, The Canucks do not have the same ambition for this campaign We dont have an ageing out core (Gallagher,Price, Weber) that has to win now. The Habs spent a boatload in the off season, missing the playoffs would be catastrophic. The Canucks are a team for tomorrow, they were not going to be SC contender this season, thats why they dont have the same ambition/urgency as the Habs this season.
  5. He's nowhere near a homerun at this point. I'd say a bit more like found money.
  6. Markstrom out with upper body injury Gee, like we couldn't see this coming?
  7. Was Toffoli part of the core, though? We never really saw Boeser and Toffoli healthy together. The Canucks were one of the highest scoring teams in the Western Conference, without Toffoli. Ferland hasn't really established himself on the team ,ever, due to health.
  8. The team would have been different. We would have been a lottery team last year, and this year as well, 6 consecutive years out of any competitive ,meaningful games. Whoopee! (what effect does that have on young players, not even mentioning Horvat who most likely be demanding a trade?) Premium UFA's are not attracted to organizations that don't compete (and certainly a team doing a 'slow cook rebuild is not attractive) In fact, isnt that what the Oilers did, sat in the weeds, waiting for the next high pick to save the franchise? Even if you do the rebuild the apparent 'correct' way, there are absolutely no garauntees..Are the Jets and the Leafs leaps and bounds ahead of the Canucks? When last season ended, Canucks, Jets and Leafs were all around 80 points. Do you think players really care that Louie Eriksson makes $6M, They're probably wondering who Louie's agent is ?. I dont buy for a second that players hold grudges (or would leave the team.. lol ) over other another players salary. Petty.
  9. "Two years ago Benning survived the firing of team president Trevor Linden, largely because his assessment of the Canucks was more aligned with the Aquilinis than Linden’s. Loosely stated, Benning felt the Canucks were close to winning. Linden thought they were still four years away".May 2020, Province Linden wanted to do a 'slow cook' rebuild starting in 2018. So, no Miller trade, Myers signing, last years playoff run doesnt even happen. Building half full, more losing. If you're not competing, your team is not a destination, players don't stick around. Linden wanted the "Boston' model 'rebuild on the fly' in 2014, and in 2018, wanted the 4 year slow cook "Winnipeg ' model Ownership had heard enough, they weren't going down the wrong garden path two times in a row. Bye Trevor.
  10. "That was a hint things were different, because in the years after Linden was hired he became increasingly involved in day-to-day hockey operations. In fact, it would be Linden on trade calls and making big hockey decisions. There were times when people in the organization would say “Linden is running this team.” At the time, it came as a surprise for some, who thought Linden was originally hired to be more of a figurehead." Botchford, 2018 Who was making the decisions?..according to Lebrun last week, Eriksson wasn't a Benning call? “We’re trying to win, we’re trying to make the playoffs,” said president of hockey operations Trevor Linden. “We’re going to do everything we can to do that. Having said that, we have a firm eye on the future. “We’ve got to do the right things. We’re going to continue to integrate young players into our lineup.” The Canucks missed the post-season last spring for the first time in six years, but bounced back with a surprising 101-point campaign following wholesale changes upstairs and behind the bench that led to the hiring of Linden, general manager Jim Benning and head coach Willie Desjardins. Vancouver was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Calgary Flames in six games, however the three men said the Canucks will be continue with a retool on the fly, and not go into rebuild mode, when they met the media for an end-of-season debrief on Wednesday...Linden, April 2014,(before Benning hiring) Your blame game, is way to cut and dry. Everybody, ownership, Benning , Linden , Gillis did good and harm to the franchise.
  11. The reasoning behind the Beagle signing was a 'void of leadership' in the room according to Benning. The Sedins were retiring. At the time of the signing, it wasn't really known if Pettersson would even make the NHL summer of 2018.?.Pettersson and Hughes immediate impact put everything ahead of schedule at that point. The only thing I didnt like about the 2018 UFA signings was the term, a year too long for both players. Benning claimed after making it to the second round of the playoffs last year that he overpaid for his vets, but they played a key role in all 3 series.
  12. Was it his (Bennings) refusal not to rebuild, or was it Lindens/ownerships? It was publicly stated by Linden that there would be no rebuild , months before Benning even signed on as GM The Sedins had their new contacts (2013), and ownership had denied Gillis a rebuild that year. Linden couldn't even bring himself to say the 'r' word, until 2017.? This doesnt excuse Benning of some of his poorer moves in the first 3 years. My point is, its exceeding common for 'Benning haters' like yourself to blame Benning 100% for the organizational direction. Which is completely misguided imo.
  13. They've got some fine young players too I like Mangiapane,Valimaki,Andersson, Tkachuk, but I would take our players everyday of the week. Imagine the uproar around here if JB traded a 1st (who would be Noah Dobson), and a 2nd for Travis Hamonic.?
  14. Embarrassing yourself again I see' In 2014, Sakic inherited, O' Reilly, Barrie, Landeskog, Duchene, MacKinnon. Prime young assets to rebuild an organization. What prime young assets did we have in 2014.? I might even consider trading the entire 2014-15 Canucks team for Nathan MacKinnon alone.
  15. I'm all ears Fred, but if you're going to deliver depressing 'hot takes', the burden of proof is on you to back it up?
  16. So,I'll take that as a confirmation that you cant name any youngsters that are getting bypassed. Keep up the good work.
  17. Chatfield, Brisebois and Tryamkin have not been stunted, two of them are clearly not NHL calibre at this point. After an initial conditioning issue, Tryamkin was/is an NHL player. No UFA's have blocked any Canuck prospect, glad we got that out of the way. Which youngsters are getting by passed exactly?
  18. So, who are these Canucks prospects that got stunted?, I'm still waiting for your answer on your claim? Buffalo Sabres are about to miss their 10th consecutive season missing the post season. Divided dressing rooms, coaching carousels etc Comparing the Canucks to the Oilers , Sabres futile years , is the negative default du jour for knee-jerk Canuck fans.
  19. No argument about overpaying certain UFA's (actually I think its more term I had issues with) Which prospects got stunted ? Benning wasn't going hit homeruns on all his picks. Yes , there's Jake (but there's also Demko and Tryamkin from that draft), and 3 consecutive calder finalists. With Hog and Juolevi coming along this season, the last thing I'm going to rag on management about is drafting.
  20. Detroit is going into its 5th year with no post season (and they still look several years away) Ottawa its 4th, LA and Anaheim their 3rd NJ Devils have made the post season once in 8 years I think its tough to get out of a rebuilding phase into a playoff contender. It takes a lot more than sitting back collecting picks. I thought that Bennings 2019 moves (Miller,Myers) kicked the team up a notch. Its almost like you have to spend 4-5 years getting your prospect pool up together, and then pull out the defibrillators ( bold trades, signings) to jump start your team to the next level.
  21. I could get some of the criticism for Jay Beagle last season, not this season though. He's played well Certainly not a player I would be pointing a finger at, for not pulling his weight. Players like Beagle and Myers get way too much flack imo.
  22. Interesting that the author says that rebuilds should take 4-5 years (thats fairly optimistic,I think). Yet the Canucks miss the post season 4 times, completely transition the old core, into a promising new one, and some posters feel violated and gipped? The Canucks had a good run of good hockey going from the WCE era to the Sedin era, and eventually, there was going to be a butchers bill for that. (a stale, ageing core with a barren prospect pool).
  23. Good to see he got 19 minutes..thats a sign of confidence from the coaching staff.
  24. No argument from me that they should have been rebuilding, and they sort of wasted 3 years with the 'rebuild on the fly' I was just clarifying the 'we can turn it around in a hurry' quote, some people perceive, or state it out of context to mean Benning saying "I can turn the franchise around in a hurry' Also ,no argument that he screwed up the cap flexibility, although,I'm not nearly as pessimistic as you as to where this team is headed. You and kanuck25 are fully HF boards type reasoning (you'd both fit in well there), I also find the complete Benning homerism ridiculous..I guess I'm in the middle somewhere.
