  1. If he hit a peak like 2006 Torres and potted 40+ points I'd see that as a massive success at this point.
  2. Because it's bad optically if the first major pick under a new management regime is a failure.
  3. Disappointed would be too nice a word if they went with Rasmussen at 5. Nothing would scream "we didn't learn a thing from Virtanen" louder.
  4. I'd be fine with Vilardi, Glass, or Pettersson. Those are my ideal players at 5. Vilardi (should he fall to 5) or Glass definitely are the safer choices, but I have a sneaking suspicion Pettersson might end up being the 2nd or 3rd best player in this draft. He's obviously got a bit more bust potential than the other two, but I really like the skillset that he carries. I wouldn't be mad at all should Benning decide to select him. I'm really not big on Makar or Middlestadt, I think both have great potential but a little too much risk attached to them. Makar would be an interesting dynamic defenseman to pair with Juolevi's style, but they'd lack a little bit of grit. Middlestadt's going to be a longer term project player through the college system. He's definitely got an interesting skill set, but I don't think he's the ideal pick. It's a weak draft, but definitely an interesting one. It'll be neat to see how it shapes up in a few years once these guys are developed.

I don't know what's more lame. The status or the fact that I got it right away...

  7. If you're personally saying that you view Virtanen as a potential Hansen with a little more offensive ability then I think the other posters 40 point estimation is entirely reasonable. Hansen has hit between 33-39 points three times in his career and was on pace for another 38 points this season over an 82 game spread. Being slightly more offensively gifted would put him in the 40 point range. I agree with the analysis of his player type, however. I'm not sure if he'll hit 40 ever in his career (especially not at this point), but your counter-argument supported his point.
  8. He's probably closer to 13-14% in that picture. I don't think 10% would be sustainable for most athletes outside of physique competitions.
  9.  Stay noided.

      OK. What does that mean?

  10. What is wrong with the anteater?!! I put my ants down and went to the kitchen, and when I came back, she had her two front paws are on the coffee table and her two back paws on the couch eating my ants like crazy! She did that once to the ants and other ants thing I was having. I picked up my phone and put the other ants on my coffee table, and the moment I picked up my phone, she started licking the ants like and would not stop even after I said no!

  11. Maybe he's thinking of Byron Bitz
  12. Irrelevant, in my opinion. He expects to be a goalscorer/point producer, so it just seems like confidence. Some guys celebrate hard after goals, and some guys are more calm and collected. I'd say he's just calm, not passionless. Edler is passionless. Goldobin is just relaxed. You can even see it in how he skates.
  13. You would be hard pressed to gain 20 pounds of muscle in the time he's been in Utica even without cutting fat and playing hockey. It'll be all fat loss, and some muscle loss. In general you can't gain muscle and lose fat at the same time unless you're a relative beginner in fitness and weight training (and have a ton of fat to lose with very little muscle under it).
  14. You are one of them too. Vaananen, Ruchinsky, Smolinski, Weinrich, Carney, that time we re-acquired Sopel, and Derek Roy are some of the finest deadline pick-ups of all time.
  15. Oh man, some real beauties on this list. Smolinski was one of my favorite random deadline acquisitions.
  16. The funny thing is, I think we'd like to see Sutter show some tenacity and hustle too. It's been a brutal season watching him.
  17. I mean... ...Chaput and Megna were on the first line, so why not?
  18. He reminds me of a Tanev type, but maybe swapping a bit of defensive shut-down ability for more offensive instinct. Brisebois is a cool prospect. I don't think he'll ever blow anyone's pants off, but having him and Juolevi on our 1st and 2nd pairings (hopefully with some dynamic complimentary partners) is very appealing.
  19. Yeah, I believe that the Gillis era was much more particular about managing players diet and fitness routines. Even their sleep schedules during the regular season. The picture of Fat Jake reminds me of one of my gym buddies. He was bulking at 1000+ calories over his TDEE and ended up really fat over 2 months and barely put on any actual lean mass hahaha.
  20. The fault probably lies partly on nutritionists/trainers and partly on Jake. I don't doubt that he was given unrealistic goals (most can only gain a maximum of 0.5lbs of lean mass a weak) but he should also have realized that coming into camp with that much body fat would hurt himself more than anything. Given the amount of injuries and out of shape players we've had though, I do think the training staff needs to be reevaluated pretty seriously.
  21. It definitely looked like a botched bulk - most power-lifters and bodybuilders will mess up their first bulk when they're new to that kind of training and end up with a way higher body-fat percentage than they need. It wouldn't surprise me if Jake's goal was to pile on a lot of strength prior to the season and messed up due to inexperience with that style of training. He's young, and given his age he probably never really trained that way before. When you bulk too much and don't focus on your conditioning at all, your cardio goes to hell too. It would explain why he was having such issues with the pace of the game compared to the end of last season. If you're going to be a low-IQ player like Virtanen, you better make sure you can keep up. I think he'll need more AHL time next season, but I sure hope the team and him reevaluate his training style over the summer. If he can keep his conditioning up, and even improve it, he'll be exciting to watch in camp.
  22. With Virtanen, sure, but I considered Juolevi the obvious pick for this team at the time so I think that one is a matter of opinion (with self-admission that it's too early to say whether or not he was a smart pick).
  23. I don't think there's any need to deflect when most of the top 10 ranked players are centers and defenders. He's going to get what he wants regardless.
  24. Definitely. He's only hit the 70 game mark once, and never a full season. His build and lack of elusiveness make him a massive injury risk. It'd suck to see him go because he's a rock when he is in the lineup, but it would be smart to move him now.
  25. I think he'd probably be more of a 4th defender on most teams that would want a veteran player like Edler. I see Hutton or Tanev being moved over him. I'd prefer Edler to go, but I just don't see anyone biting on him as a commodity.
