well if Demko needs more time to work on his game and be super consistent, we have Holtby, and when he's on his horse, he's a true game changer and I fully believe Ian Clark will help him get back to that. thankfully we have no concerns about who is in the net..

Why has the conversation about prospects changed?
iceman64 replied to CallAfterLife's topic in Canucks Talk
I gave the laugh because it's seldom that I hear about the turd sandwich team JB took over.. I'd say it was much worse than that, I wouldn't have taken the job here if I was a GM.. no fn way... -
Why has the conversation about prospects changed?

Well on D, he doesn't have much of a choice since we can't afford anyone unless someone offers something but it is time we let our younger D prospects have a shot anyway to see where their at.. We've never even had a farm like this ever, didn't matter who was GM, they usually followed the pressure of win it all now and screw the farm. That worked well didn't it? Not so much.. Anyway, since 74, it's been painful to watch with the odd exceptions 94.. 2011.. However with Covid and that fn cap that screwed us royally already since day one of it, finally we're turning the corner.. could we ever say that before? Uh uh, not like this... -
Schmitty and QH won't be a pairing, at least unless it's in special situations but we need 2 pairings with both of those guys on each, have to spread the wealth and not be a 1 trick pony...

Why has the conversation about prospects changed?

I disagree with saying our prospects are anywhere near the same as shink, Goldy etc.. Leaving D out of it because you stated OJ and Raff, but at forward Hogs is twice the player that shink is/was, Hogs has too much drive and skill not to make it.. I don't know why the OP didn't mention Podz BUT that kid will rock it and better than anyone we've had lately waiting in the wings, he's the only one I'm super stoked about... Quick, tough, and skilled and proves it night after night, even if he doesn't make the scoresheet he makes his presence known and if he played more over across the pond, and we all know why he doesn't but that kid has nothing but drive to make it and has a good defensive game too. Podz wants the puck and does whatever it takes to get it. He's like a slightly lesser Bure, Pavel had that drive and you can't develop that, it's all in character.. Players might get better at it but you can tell Podz hates to lose and still is nowhere near his ceiling.. Podz is our closest to making it and if JV played anything near Podz, we'd all be a lot happier.. -
Thanks for that, took me more than a few mins to stop laughing! You weren't actually serious were you?

Safe to say Hughes is on the same level as Dahlin now?
iceman64 replied to cuporbust's topic in Canucks Talk
I'm just glad we have a bonafide top pairing Dman who can QB the power play as he reads plays extremely well.. just glad he's here, I really don't care who he get's compared against. -
All with 2 mins of ice time... Ok kidding but since his outing at the tourney I expect he'll see more ice team but who knows, it's not like he's not coming to North America soon.. think it depends a lot of how the team does, as in, are they winning without him on the ice anyway? Haven't looked at their stats but he's going full out now and won't be disregarded easily... Like it when your draft pick does that despite being buried.. Wtg Pods! F them!
-
Had no idea either but Pods is just warming up for lift off, too much drive to fail I think, he just keeps getting better even with crappy ice time but finally getting his shot was inevitable, too smart and skilled to be kept out of it, I'm liking the potential of this team and with Pods we're one big step closer, the kid is slick! With better linemates and ice time since his draft Day we'd be even more stoked about him since I'm sure his numbers would be a lot better... I still can hardly believe we got him...

JV better do something amazing before Vas shows up, if he doesn't he'll lose any hope of 2nd line play, imo if JV blows it again then he'll also have to deal with Hogs as well, poor sap better get his **** together this year or I'd say he's done here easily with those two breathing down his neck for his potential best roster spot.. honestly I've been on JV's train for awhile waiting for him to really break out but.. lost patience with his b.s. I hope he comes back this year with his head on right but I'm not holding my breath...

I dont think Virtanen has the IQ to become a top 6 forward.
iceman64 replied to apollo18's topic in Canucks Talk
Pretty much true, with exceptions, PF's don't start to peak until 26 ish.. Jake is still only 24 and has good players and teachers he'll learn from. Patience and the CDC? Ummm not so much... -
In a sense yes, in another sense no.. an all in offence can be offset by a really good play reading Dman, funny thing was before Bure went down, he and Almo had started to click with some time together on the PP but after Pavel got hurt, it all went south.. ugh.. and the other thing is having a young nasty Mark Messier type who would go and pick retrieve by force and feed Gretz or Kurri... Past that? No idea but yeah having a Horvat type of player would work pretty well too I imagine, i.e. your D minded center you mentioned
-
Almo, after Bure went down, carried the team on his back for about 10-12 games and finally gassed out but while he did, some super slick goals! I remember that well, Bill Good senior did an interview after it.. after that, when he went into a bit of a slump and was so critized over it you could tell he lost heart and never played the same. Anyway Almo, beside Bure and Petterson.. wow! I'd stack that up against almost anyone..
-
Uh huh.. I just wish he had Podz' drive.. that bulldog is the real deal, Jake? Well I just don't know if he has it together "upstairs" yet which we all know is his only problem left
-
Yeah I read that and was going to post it but it's seems a no brainer, if we don't try out the new guys how will we know so I think JB might stand pat and just wait and see, good article though explaining it with comparison's.. I'd do the same I think if I couldn't unload anyone but I bet JB's tempted to let JV go for a pick and give Hoglander a spot to lose, and of course sign AG and then see how it goes.

Technical difficulties lol

I'm reading 3.1 Mil in cap for us in 'NHL Numbers"

It kind of strikes me as odd that this would surprise anyone or come as news, if we signed Train then it's just one more asset to put in to the pool when the Kraken come calling.. seems like a good idea to me.

Well it's not a bad thing evaluating how the prospects are looking, especially on D, not only for current roster spots as they come available but for depth when enevitable injuries occur (knocks on wood) ATM it looks ok as far as that looks right now, but that can change but as long as there's a single PMD in of them, that's all we really need.. we can't just depend on Hughes and Smitty to carry the puck out rather than the typical off the boards or glass where we only have a small chance of our forwards retrieving it and then have it right back in our own end again Obviously, there's only so many times we can get away with that in goals against in playing the odds and sooner or later we get bitten and that happens way too much.. That's why we gave up so many shots and that needs to stop, not with a slowing it down from happening quite as much now that Smitty has arrived, I'm actually hoping OJ will be that guy but someone has to step in at any rate..
-
Well, Podz is due here next year and he's already everything Jake yet isn't.. the way I see it, last chance cafe for him now IF he's not signed and traded away next season or before that if he he's not showing enough maturity by skating into camp with a chip on his shoulder, in shape, and a new determination not to F it up, then he will stay IF he shows up every night like that, but when the new Russian rocket 2.0 shows up, and Jake hasn't taken huge steps to keep his roster spot, then it's gone, Jake better pull out his inner bulldog and control it (A game) to be even close... Skill wise, Podz has an arsenal where Jake has his shotgun.. in this case Jake you'd better get 2.. I'm stoked about Podz obviously but a Jake with 5 times the skill and 5 times the determination, makes Jake expendable and we win an ELC in a flat cap for who knows how long might be a be a difference that goes a long way if cap stays flat.. who knows right? But wow.. I keep watching videos of Podz and he reminds me a lot of Pavel Bure AFTER the elbow to Churla especially that there was no way he was going to let anyone get between him and the puck, and then the skill to put it in the net and that's what makes Podz into the pitbull like that too..
-
That's about it in a nutshell, I've tried to explain that numerous times to people but some just don't get it.. why? I have no idea.. well wait, I do know it's a bit to do with the media that didn't get it either, ok most, not all but good observation, encouraging to know that not all people miss it..

He forgets the joke of a team we had after 2012 onward.. just a good seasonal team that never made it far and had next to zero depth.. and a core that was broken after Boston beat us up.. pretty thankful there's only Eddie left from that era. Everyone like to blame the current guy when the previous guy left next to zero to build on except for aging players with ntc's that weren't really mentoring anyone to speak of as the draft cupboard had be sold dry for so long that many of us here have never seen much success farm wise, let alone it being ranked in the top 3 I think it was lately, but this is a real team for a change with guys about to be brought in to take roster spots which is fairly rare here but scarcely believable actually, a nice change but people can stop thinking the sky is falling because it's clearly not, we just have a couple more seasons before our window is right there with a good shot and not a fluke season success but built over the long haul.. We're due, has it been easy along the way? Nope but freaking out over the past and it's failures hardly helps, but a cautious hope, nothing wrong with that...
