  1. Agree completely. I was quite impressed with the honest & certainty in which they handled it. I think they see the obvious pieces/talent like we do, but also have a clear vision for where improvement needs to be. What they said made me feel really optimistic about this team. But now we'll see how they execute.
  2. No, b/c 'popular' doesn't inherently = 'correct' on any scale. (imo) And with all the misinformation in the world; both from loons/charlatans on Twitter aswell as rich/powerful corporations & institutions - (all whom act in their self interest) - influencing large segments of the population is a real phenomena. Plus the natural social pressures of 'fitting in' that lead to artificially taking a position with no independent thought. And also the chances of a meta-'consensus' (narrative), which are often - if not always - influenced by the powerful, completely aligning with your perspective is generally small imo.
  3. Well I think going by popular vote leads to the same problem, with more marginalization for less populated areas. And any mindless person can get riled up over catchy talking points - there are certainly alot of those folks in the urban cities of California & New York aswell as the swamps of Georgia. Maybe I'm a little crazy but I'd lean more towards de-centralization. Why should you be 'represented' (meaning; your well-being forcibly controlled) by people you despise, whom don't align with your values or care about your concerns in anyway?
  4. I dont think he claimed to have created the meme tho In some ways centrism is kind of relative. I think your both correct in your comments, but different people from different areas & influences draw the line in a different place. It doesn't mean that there isn't valid reasons to have different beliefs, but its just all part of democracy & populations having autonomy.
  5. We're talking about a guy looking to put humanity on Mars. I feel like his ambitions are beyond merely getting into the corporate racket for the sake of his individual wealth. (Tho I do appreciate thinking in terms of 'these people are motivated by self interest' - b/c politicians, their influencers, & the parties are in it for self interest more than we attribute to them, imo)
  6. Good thread idea, would be nice to have a place for general off-season discussion. I don't think I would trade our 1st unless we get another 1st somehow (Boeser? Miller?) or a cost controlled young asset we like better than the players available at the pick. After trading the last two 1sts however, its time to draft & have another good prospect coming. The #1 priority for me, beyond figuring out Miller/Horvat, is adding a top 3 RHD. I think that'll involve moving out Myers money & potentially trading someone like Boeser or Garland (if not in a straight up hockey deal, for the assets to make the deal work). Beyond that finding another capable top 9 center (especially if Miller is traded), and seeing if we can free up cap space in the way of Dickinson/Poolman. I think this roster is a playoff team as is, but it would be nice to add another piece on the backend & really get things going. Whether to trade Boeser or not is a tough one, if he would sign a deal like Garland's I would think long & hard about keeping him. I really like having both he & Garland, but we do need an asset to fetch a defenseman (and the cap flexibility). And if Brock will be alot more expensive then I'd rather keep Garland. If he signs a team friendly deal maybe you keep them both, then try & center a deal around Rathbone or Hoglander. Although the Miller situation needs to be resolved first; if he won't re-sign then there's no urgency to trade Brock or Garland.
  7. 49 points at even strength is incredible - 2nd on the team behind Miller - they should not trade Garland
  8. Teams would be stupid to not take OEL at 3.6M. OEL as a UFA would probably get 6 on a multi-year deal. I don't know why this is even a conversation, OEL has been the best addition to our team. Overpaid by a million or so sure, but he's not the problem. Myers/Dickinson/Poolman are far more inefficient, atleast OEL can play 23+ mins a night & run a PP.
  9. I don't mean that as the end goal, I mean that as the next step. Rarely do teams go from non-playoffs to contender it involves the top players gaining experience & the group reaching new levels as a consequence. Whether you trade Miller or not you still have to keep putting this team in a position to make the playoffs, with an aim to building this into a contender of course. I think we sort of agree, maybe disagree about how you get there. Adding another T3D is #1 imo. Then if you move Miller another good top 9 center.
  10. I disagree, at times they are good, but others it looks like OEL is babysitting. Myers just doesn't have the IQ to move the puck well/quickly under pressure like OEL does. I think we could find a better fit that could get more out of OEL. Obviously finding that defenseman is going to be the hard part but its worth making a goal.
  11. Hughes/Demko's contract is the window, if you take 2-3 years to get to the point we are at now (arguably under Bruce a divisional playoff team), then they'll be (a) closer to UFA, and more expensive to re-sign, thereby limiting our space in the future, and (b) who says they'll want to stick around - (same with Horvat). I could easily see Hughes going to NJ if we flush the next 2-3 years down the toilet. Plus you'd be wasting Podkolzin's ELC not trying to compete. I don't think a rebuild is neccesary. Pettersson, Demko & Hughes are stars now. Horvat is a 30 goal scorer, OEL is a top 3D. This core needs to get in the playoffs & are start gaining maturity. Morale has been bad in prior years, can't risk that again or this core won't want to stay.
  12. He's a wildcard game to game - probably a #4 on a good team. He's a bit overpaid (inefficient money), and isn't a great fit with either of our T4 LHD. Adding another legit top 3D is the biggest thing needed to make the leap to contender status & we can't do it with Myers 6M around. If he was paid less I'd be fine with him but its prohibitive.
  13. I think #1 priority has to be getting off Myers & finding a replacement with that money. OEL's has been such a great addition (on the ice) IMO, but not having to manage Myers would help - and obviously Myers has never been a great fit for Quinn either. Pretty much agree with @ilduce39 on Miller. Decision needs to be made in the summer. I'm 50/50 on what to do as I don't think the team can afford to take a step back, but we absolutely need to get a favorable contract or we can't sign him - imo.
  14. Of course they change the rules again, everytime we've been in the lottery the rules have changed to our detriment. Missed playoffs in 13-14, minimal odds for & could only move up 4 spots. Go through a re-building cycle after 14-15; now every non-playoff team has a chance to pick top 3 - we get shafted as a perenial bottom feeder. Now we miss in a higher position & they've changed the rules again. Getting a huge jump up like Winnipeg (Laine), or Dallas (Heiskanen) could be a huge boost - but nope. /whining. Bingo on Jiricek, him or that other RH defenseman would be just the ticket we need - but we're Canucks fans so obviously we aren't winning the lottery. Is there just 1 lottery this year or still 2-3?
  15. Do we even have a chance to pick 1st (assuming were 14th-16th) or did the NHL change the lotto rules again?
  16. It seems like some people think u just draft a bunch of guys then all of a sudden they make the roster & are good at the same time, then your a contender. Your dead on. Once u have the core, gotta make the playoffs & keep building. Adding Ekman-Larsson has been huge for our defense & team overall imo. Now they need to get off Myers & find a few new defenseman. I have liked Dermott tho, maybe he can play #4 mins at times. Up front Petey regaining form & Podz emerging are huge developments. One of Miller/Garland/Boeser are likely gone, I'm thinking Boeser unless Miller won't re-sign. I hope we keep Garland.
  17. All the talk of being carried by goaltending & they couldn't get a save tonight. Once Horvat went down it was over. Bitter end but a better future.
