Who would've thought Stone Cold would actually be in a legit match ever again.. When I saw he was involved in something I was curious to see it, but no idea he would have a match. I was shocked watching it happen, but it was a very fun moment. (Couldn't believe he took that suplex bump in the crowd) -
As much as there's no blue chip D prospect, we have a few nice projects. Truscott, Jurmo, Woo, Gabrielsson, Myrenberg.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Smashian Kassian replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
We agree on Pearson completely. My idea with Dickinson/Poolman is just to find a Pearson/Gudbranson type deal. Someone that's fallen out of favour & maybe fits better for us. (Also I'm not against bringing Dickinson back as I do think he can be a useful winger, but Poolman I don't see a place for) Cap space of the purpose of moving those big 3 forwards, but I also think its gotta be done in the interest of shifting their value to the defense. Downgrading from Boeser to Kapanen isn't bad if you can also add a top 4D like Marino, for example. (Damon Severson is another name I'd be interested in, maybe something around Garland) Moving Ferland might not cost us much, teams can use his contract to game the LTIR system & create cap space later on in the year. It would probably be a soft deal. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

Just looking at the assets on the current roster; C's: (3) Pettersson Horvat Lammikko W's: (7) Miller Boeser Garland Podkolzin Hoglander Pearson Lockwood D: Hughes - ??? OEL - ??? Dermott - Schenn Rathbone There's a solid shell there, and some good assets to peddle. Not to say your married to support guys like Dermott/Schenn/Lammikko/Pearson, but they are atleast assets either way. #1 priority is adding to the defense, ideally 2 guys - one a legit top 3D, & the other a 3/4 that compliments OEL or Hughes well - that would be the biggest boost. Then with the forward group (a) adding a legit 3C - Dickinson hasn't work, this has been needed for awhile. (b) replacing a top 6 FWD if you move 2 of Boes/Miller/Garly (c) rounding out the group with more size & speed -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

I agree completely. We have the core plus other good pieces beyond that. The obvious comp is 07/08 to where they went, I think there's potential for that here. (Frankly this should've been a playoff team this year, so I genuinely don't think things are so grim either) Its going to be interesting to see how they can carve out additional cap space, & then how its used. Dickinson, Poolman & Myers are the intriguing guys to me. Dickinson & Poolman are going to be tough, maybe u can find a hockey deal where you take on a similar contract. Myers on the other-hand is interesting; an inefficient contract but a useful player. Does someone take him on at 6 for basically nothing? If you retain 1M+ could u get an asset(s)? (and is it worth retaining for an asset if you can make other moves?) I think Pearson is a guy that could be moved for sure, but I'm not sure if I want to move him. Drance & Sat mentioned their projected to have somewhere between 16-17M in cap space (with Ferland on LTIR) w/ Boeser being the 1 major guy that's up. Obviously they have to budget for Miller/Horvat if they are to be-resigned, but 2.4M of the Holtby/Virtanen buyouts + the Halak bonus are all coming off the cap for the following season, so there's another 3.5M or so we'll get cleared to help offset potential raises. Trading Ferland's deal to get out of LTIR would be a solid start. I'm sure there's contending teams (TB/Vegas/Toronto/Colorado?) that could be interested. -
Wonder if he's inclined to stay given he's from here. Abby isn't a bad spot at all. Start as depth & see if he can work his way to the bottom pair. He's been alright as a depth guy when he's played.

I'm not ready to go that far, it's just line rushes. Podz has actually been playing a decent amount lately - significantly more than Petan & slightly more than Chiasson - but I would like to see him given even more of a chance down this stretch. Podz / Rathbone / Lockwood are the 3 guys we need to usher along here, get them comfortable with the NHL for next season. Lockwood has looked good so far, & Podz has gotten better all year. Now we just need to get Rathbone up & playing. (I'd also be curious to see Dermott w/ OEL, just to see how Dermott could do)
-
Should move Podz up to the top 6 for the rest of the season. Give him opportunity to pot a few & get his confidence up going into next year. When he's confident he feels he can make a difference in the game, then thats when he's most engaged/aggressive. As opposed to just playing a safe game when he's lower down & playing limited minutes. Need the aggressive & engaged Podz.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Smashian Kassian replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yeah I'd be good with that too. Who knows if Kakko is going to be a star but he's got talent. And another first is a primo asset to get. If you trade 2 of Boeser/Miller/Garland & get two 1sts, one could be flipped for a good defenseman. That's kind of how I see a turnaround happening. Getting creative with multiple moves. -

You guys are turning me on Chytil. We do need speed & a 3C. The only glaring problem with Chytil is he's not good at faceoffs. (and we just went through this with Dickinson). So maybe he's not the 3C answer, but his speed valuable nonetheless. Lundkvist, Chytil, Kravtsov & a 1st is a nice haul. @aGENT I also like Kapanen alot, but I think he's what he is at this point - a good middle 6 forward with speed. I'd happily take him so long as we aren't paying a premium. Ilya Mikheyev (14 goals) & Nichuskin (19 goals) are UFA's and profile similarly. It depends how much $$$ they'd all command, but Kapanen needs a new contract aswell. If you make a trade with the Rangers that brings back multiple forwards, or even trade Garland & open up cap space, then maybe you re-visit Boeser to PIT around Marino. Boeser/Dermott for Marino/Kapanen seems like a reasonable framework. Garland/Boeser/Miller are the trade chips, but we gotta be careful to not lose too much offense at the same time. I like the names we are discussing, but going from them to Chytil, Kravstov & Kapanen is quite the drop. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks

I'm not really famillar with Lundkvist, more of an OFD? I like Schneider's game more, plus he's already in the NHL, but I guess Lundkvist does have good upside too. Maybe I'm underselling Chytil. He would add speed but I just don't know about his upside beyond what he already is. Kravtsov I think has a real ceiling & has more to him than Goldobin, say. Buchnevich was in limbo with the Rangers at one point before breaking out. I'd love to take a flyer on Kravtsov in the deal he's got size & good tools. If they wouldn't move Schneider or Kakko, then you'd almost want all 3 plus a 1st seeing as niether Lundkvist / Kravtsov are NHL players yet & Chytil is a 3rd liner at this stage. -
I don't know much about this Kuzmenko but these guys are always worth taking a flyer on. What happens with Garland/Boeser also depends on Miller too. If we can't get him signed & we trade him for a haul, then maybe we have to keep Garland & Boeser to stay as competitive as we need too. Lots of possibilities. Trying to move Dickinson/Poolman & the Miller situation is priority #1. Beyond that trying to find another T3D (Severson?) is right there, and then rounding out the roster. Deslauriers, Mikheyev, Nichuskin are UFA targets I'd love for the bottom 6. Colin Miller & Justin Schultz are also intriguing defense names, tho I wouldn't want to pay a premium. Manson is one too but he'll likely command a big ticket.

That would be best case scenario. OEL moves to the right side to play with Rathbone. But either way yes we are building the defense around OEL (in part, & w/ Hughes) b/c he's signed long term & is still a good player that logs big minutes. When I say "build around" I don't mean for 10 years, I mean for right now & the window this team has for the foreseeable future. For the next 3 years its Hughes/OEL that are the good pieces & the rest needs to be figured out. If Rathbone can be a good Top 3/4D along with those 2 that'd be fantastic, but his defensive awareness left some to be desired earlier on. We'll have to see where he's at when he comes up, I'm certainly not giving up on him I think he's got alot of talent. Just saying he's an valuable asset & we have some depth on the LS. Colorado capitalized on Devon Toews being available, two 2nd's wasn't nothing but its a bargain in retrospect. Who knows what opportunities might be available in the future.
-
Along similar lines, Ondrej Palat is a UFA (as is Nino Niederitter). If you move Garland/Boeser or both, get a good haul back - maybe turn those assets into a top 3 defenseman (if you don't get one in the deal), then you use the cap space to bring one of them in. Palat in particular would be good given his experience - though I'm sure he'll be a hot commodity. Niederitter might offer more value.
-
I don't think they'll intentionally take a step back. This team could easily be in the playoffs next year even with just minor tweaks (tho we should/will do more). But this was basically my point, that we can't take rebuilding type steps back or your flushing the window of this core - Hughes/Demko's contracts set the window. 5 years is a long time. If we change the dynamic of the team & are in the playoffs next year, suddenly the outlook is pretty good. Look at how quickly NYR turned things around & our young core is more evident than theirs was. Miller is going to be a difficult decision though.

Dermott can skate the puck out. If Rathbone can't defend then he's not going to be trusted to play much more than Dermott has been anyways. OEL & Hughes are on the left side for the foreseeable future. OEL's contract is much maligned but he's still a good player. So that's what we are building the defense around. Not saying Rathbone can't be apart of it but he's gotta be able to be a legit top 3/4D imo. And if you did trade him it would be for something valuable, not giving him away. Who knows on Dermott, I didn't expect Hamonic to return a 3rd but he did. If Dermott plays great next year as a #5, maybe takes some shifts with OEL in the top 4, then a team might give a 3rd given his cap hit. It just depends how he plays, but right now yeah probably not - I did think we paid a premium.
-
Rathbone won't be Quinn lite, maybe Ehrhoff but nothing like Quinn. He's got good offensive talent, good shot/skating, but won't ever be a top pair D defensively imo. If Rathbone comes into the NHL & plays well behind Quinn/OEL (in a favourable situation) then that's ideal. Could boost his value & then we could use him as a trade chip when its at its highest. Or he really excells & OEL moves to the right side. Either way I think we need to capitalize on him as an asset. I was originally sour on that deal, but I think he's actually been a solid #5. Also with his cap hit he could easily be traded again and return a pick, IMO.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Smashian Kassian replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Lets break it down, defense targets are; KA Miller, Schneider & Lundkvist. Forward targets are; Lafrienere, Kakko, Chytil, Kravtsov. - We'll assume Laf & Miller are off the table. I'd demand Schneider, and prioritize Kakko/Kravtsov over Chytil. (and probably in that order). Personally I like Kravtsov but wouldn't view him as the main piece. I'd have his value around a 2nd, like Lias Andersson was traded for when he left the Rangers. So basically a 3rd piece in the deal. I do think he has high upside/talent though & is worth a gamble. I'm not super crazy about Lundkvist either, though he's a probably a better asset than Kravtsov. I guess I'd have my priority: Schneider Kakko Kravtsov/Lundkvist As far as Kakko I haven't seen him play, but he's got the pedigree. Hasn't done much so not worried about re-signing him, its just can he recapture his potential with a fresh start? He's already an NHL player so it would be worth a gamble.
