[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Smashian Kassian replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
What if the Rangers offered Kravtsov, Lundkvist & a 1st? Is that enough? I don't mind either player but I feel like we need one of the bigger pieces to be involved - Lafrienere / Schneider. I'm also intrigued by Kakko, but not sure how to rate him. I like all these players, but outside of Lafrienere & Schneider they seem like gambles (K'Andre Miller aside, who they won't move imo). We need atleast 1 surefire piece here. -
So.... who's good??

I think after last year alot of people were assuming Hoglander would rise & be due for a 'big' payday, but I'm not so sure. I think his 2nd contract will be team friendly. And Podkolzin still has 2 years left then we'll see where he's at, he's a real wildcard. Lockwood looks like he could play with some more time to adjust, and Klimovich seems like a decent bet aswell. That's 4 cost effective young forwards. Plus Rathbone on the backend. Obviously need to keep them coming, but I don't think things are so grim.

I'm concerned with that too as we're in a critical point. The good part is JR has his hands firmly on the wheel, and I do have confidence in Allvin as JR clearly believes in him. Its just what their approach is going to be. Allvin did mention making this team better for next year in his TDL presser, so I don't think they view this as a rebuild situation which is encouraging.

3 things stand out 1) PK has been a major problem, need to make sure we have the right personnel going into next season. It cost us so many games. The difference in playoffs alone probably. 2) Need another Top 3 D to go along with Hughes / OEL - this is the biggest. Then probably replacing Myers with a more efficient #4. Dermott has been a good addition as a #5. He, Schenn & Rathbone can round out the 3rd pair/depth. 3) The secondary players here need to be apart of a team identity. Right now we are smaller overall, & not very fast (especially w/o Motte, Highmore, Hoglander). We've had trouble with bigger defensive teams this year in particular, we have to be able to win those tight games. I view Pettersson, Hughes, Horvat, OEL, & Demko as the core. And Hughes contract (5 years) as the window. Miller is going to be a tough decision, I was originally thinking we can't afford to lose him (and have to take the risk on the contract) but Petey's recent resurgence has given me hope. He's still an integral part of the team but we can't afford to massively overpay. Gotta try for a reasonable deal within a team salary structure, or else move him - either way it needs to be resolved this offseason.

Having Guenther would be great, but even now I'm not ready to say its horrible. Maybe you'd like it back for the flexibility, but its not an unworkable situation IMO. Alot is made of OEL's contract - and its a commitment for sure - but lost in that is the fact he's still a really good player. And how much is he actually overpaid by? Lindholm just signed for 6.5M. If OEL had been a UFA taking a 3 year deal, what do you think he'd get? I could see in the 6-6.5 range for sure, we have him at 7.2. 1M overpaid isn't ideal but its not the end of the world. Sure you can't move him, but in the last few years the buyout isn't bad anyways if things go south. In meantime he's still a good player that gives us the potential for 2 good pairs. Garland on the other-hand is definitely still an asset that can be moved & yield a return.

If I'm a GM that has a struggling player - similar contract/situation - and I need a RH defenseman I might consider it. You see these kind of hockey deals from time to time (Ala Pearson for Gudbranson). I didn't think Hamonic was tradeable either, but he got a good pick back. Its not like right handed NHL defenseman grow on trees. Teams are always looking for them & whatever you think of Poolman he is an NHL player. Not saying he'll return anything or be without a cost, but all it takes it one team to see something in Poolman for an opportunity to arise.

Seems like there's always someone with question marks that falls. Not because they aren't great prospects but b/c teams feel pressure with the top 10 picks to get a player. Out of that list, Krebs / Chychurn / Caufield / Smith stand out as guys that fell. Chychurn was top 5 originally, concerns about IQ & not dominating the OHL had him slowly fall throughout the year (what a steal). Krebs was top 10, a season ending injury did him in (on top of questions about his ceiling). He looks like a great player already. Caufield, obviously size. Smith was considered in the top tier of defenders that year - top 10 range, slipped to almost 20. Good prospect to get there. I think there's opportunity, lets just hope we get the right guy.

Good analysis. I thought OEL had a really good game (despite a few moments that might make you think otherwise). OEL & Hughes are a good starting point we can build the defense around. I don't hate Myers, good support player but he's not steady enough to be a top 3D. Would be great as our #4D, but his salary might be a little too inefficient for that. I like Dermott & Schenn as bottom pair guys going forward. But we can't be relying on Schenn to be a #4. And if Rathbone makes the jump then one of them slides out which is great for our depth (or maybe you move Dermott). Hunt has had a good second half but he's probably a 7/8 at this point, Burroughs is a nice depth player but ideally a 7/8 aswell. Organizational soldiers if they'd come back. Not sure where this leaves Poolman. If we can move him he's a prime target to carve out cap space. 2.5M isn't horrible but 3 more years might be a sticking point.

I don't know how low we can finish, but the 13-16 range isn't bad to be. There's always good players available between 10-20. Most recent drafts; 2020: Mercer #18, Schneider #19 2019: Caufield #15, Newhook #16, Krebs #17, Harley #18 2018: Farabee #14, Ty Smith #17, K'Andre Miller #22 2017: Norris #19, Thomas #20, Yamamoto #22 2016: McAvoy #14, Chychurn #16, Fabbro #17 Always guys that have tools, & potentially huge upsides, fall to that range. You can really make hay in that area.

Even under Green there we so many games where our historically bad PK was costing us games. Just the PK being average alone would've had us atleast .500 We have good core pieces (Pettersson, Horvat, Hughes, OEL, Demko), some young roster players (Hog, Podz, Lockwood, Rathbone potentially) and some other good assets on the roster (Miller, Boeser, Garland) Time to reshape the team around the core part. Adding another top 3 defenseman is the #1 priority, then rounding out the team around core pieces. (and with more of an indentity)
-
Lack of identity maybe? They are smaller & seem to struggle against bigger teams. They can thrive when its fire wagon hockey with rush chances & open ice. Less when its defensive hockey & possession all from the outside. Need to add supplementary pieces that either make us fast or big (as a whole). But really we need more of both those elements.

Reinhart got 1st+2nd+good prospect? Brock prob won't get as much, but I could see equivalent to a 1st/decent prospect or 2nd/good prospect. For sure Reinhart had pedigree, was on a bad team & thought to have more upside, but I think you could make the same arguments for Boeser too. Most thought he could be a consistent 30 goal scorer & has pedigree/upside of what he showed in his rookie year. (he also led the team in scoring last year)
