Only 2.65M, its not Player Names 6M. He has speed & forechecks well, but it doesn't translate into anything tangible. Plus he's been bad on the PK & cant win faceoffs. As a LW I could see him being useful for someone, but it just hasn't worked as a fit here. Maybe we can find another struggling player with an undesirable contract to swap him for. (ala Gudbranson for Pearson)

Kapanen's best season was less productive than Boeser's worst. I've always liked Kapanen but there's a huge gap between these two. I mentioned in another thread about building a defense with a legit top 3 (eg: Hedman, McDonagh, Cernak / Pietrangelo, Parayko, Bouwmeester / Carlson, Orlov, Niskanen). So my question with Marino is whether or not could be a legit #2/3D on a contending team, or is he a #4D? If you think he's could be a 2/3 then I'd do it, if your unsure he's more than a good #4 then I don't know if I would unless a 1st is involved. TOI wise he's been Pittsburgh's #3, the sense I get from reading HF is that when he's on he's played like a legit #3, and when he's not he's been more of a #4/5.

[Rumour] Tyler Motte drawing interest
Smashian Kassian replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I heard Sean Kuraly as the comparable. 4yrs x 2.5M But the difference here is that Kuraly is a center, and he's also been a more productive player in his career. That's basically the ceiling for Motte imo, not 3M. Comparing to the recent bottom 6 contracts we signed; Beagle was a center & Roussel was a better player (was on a 39 pt pace his first season here, & had double digit goals 4/5 seasons in Dallas). I think Motte is about 2M+ depending on term, probably 3 years. I'd add an extra year to get him a little under 2M if possible. Unless you get a 1st, high 2nd, or good prospect, I'd prefer to sign him. He's an important part of our team. -
I don't have a great feeling about this Boeser trade. I hope whatever happens we get a 1st back in the deal, because we probably aren't getting a player as good as Boeser back. It'll be multiple players, neither as good or valuable on their own.

The Elite Defencemen of this Generation Thread
Smashian Kassian replied to HKSR's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Fox & Makar are the cream of the crop. Everyone knows how good Makar is, Fox doesn't have the flash but does just as much for NYR. He's really fantastic. Wouldn't have guessed Seider would be this good right away but he's looking like the next one, along with Hughes & Heiskanen. (I'd still have Heiskanen in this group for sure). -
Would you re-sign JT Miller to a 7.5m/7yrs extension?
Smashian Kassian replied to billabong's topic in Canucks Talk
Oh for sure, the back-end years could suck but if you need to move off them you can always attach an asset. 7.5 in the meanwhile would be money. -
So Karlsson is a legit prospect now? Can't say I saw this coming.. truthfully. Awesome though! Especially being a center. This could be one of those secondary prospects that makes the team & is a good bottom 6 contributor on an ELC. (When we are in our window)

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Smashian Kassian replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
That Colorado package would be enough to move, or a similar deal from the Rangers involving Schneider, a 1st, another prospect. As for Barron vs Byram, my gut says Byram but Im also not sure where Barron is at in his development, or if he's viewed as a sure thing. Byram is an NHL player now & he'll play again imo, it's just a matter of if the injury problems linger. Regardless anything short of those kinds of deals and we hold onto Miller until the summer imo. -
The way I see building a defense is you need a top 3 of legit guys you can count on to play big minutes. Then you find a good compliment(s) for the #4 that are also capable but don't have to be the same level. Looking at past winners; TB; Hedman, McDonagh, Cernak - #4's included Shattenkirk, Bogo, Rutta, exc. STL; Pietrangelo, Parayko, Bouwmeester. #4 was Edmundson. (Gunnarsson also played with Petro at times) WSH; Carlson, Orlov, Niskanen. Then they had Kempny playing well with Carlson. Especially if you have a #1D that you can play with the #4, and then a good pairing of legit #2/3 types. With Hughes & Ekman-Larsson we have a good #1 & #2, but we need to find the third guy & it has to be Right side. I do wonder about Myers & what we could do with him. Say even if you retained 1M, maybe you could then get assets back that could be used to bolster the roster. I know it's tough to envision retaining with our cap situation but if we could make some other moves maybe it could happen. I'm thinking if you can get 1st/2nd round picks and/or touted prospects for a few guys, that could allow us to flip those assets into good players that fit moving forward. And I agree we need to replace Dickinson with a different C/W that can play T9/PK. That's the other big issue. Fingers crossed we can move him.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Smashian Kassian replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I think we sort of agree. I don't view it as definite that we need to trade Miller until we get to the offseason & have all the information. (If he'd stay, what a contract looks like, what teams would offer, what other options we have for dealing other players, exc) I think it's very interconnected & if we move Miller it's got be apart of a series of moves that allows us to reshape the team while remaining competitive (and growing). I agree the team revolves around Demko and Hughes, not necessarily Miller (though a top 10 scorer is a great piece). But even then, both are on 5/6 year deals & that go to UFA, so it's not time to be taking 'rebuilding' type steps backward that waste key years. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Smashian Kassian replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Well, if your entirely ruling out re-signing him then that's the logical conclusion of the position. And if your not, then there's no urgency or reason you must do this now outside of something coming along that you can't refuse. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Smashian Kassian replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I don't agree that it's a guarantee he leaves. He said how much he appreciates Vancouver giving him the opportunity to be a front-line player. Sounds like hes happy with his playing situation to me. You say he hasn't indicated much about whether he'd stay, but I'd suggest he just hasnt indicated much about the situation period. I think we will get a better sense of that in the offseason once he's eligible for an extension. I 100% get not wanting to lose him for nothing, but I don't think we are at that point yet. And even if we did think he's leaving, I'm not totally convinced now is a better time to do it as compared to the summer. In the summer there will be more teams in the mix & a possibility for extension talks. Look what Columbus did with Seth Jones for example. If we are trading him right now it's b/c there's a package available that makes sense/is too good to turn down, not just collecting whatever we can. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Smashian Kassian replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
The problem with trading Miller is you'll never replace him, and he's the guy driving the bus. Not Pettersson/Horvat. You gotta have a clear vision for how you reshape the roster without him. This team isn't in a position to stock up on 1st/2nd round picks & wait 3+ years for them to materialize. Hughes & Demko are on deals w/ UFA years, the team can't take big steps back & waste their prime years. -
Well said. If they trade Miller there is no replacement/improvement coming, and frankly there may never be another one in the life cycle of this core. He's that important & that good. I think going forward we need 1 more stud top 3 defenseman, another 3L center option (since Dickinson hasn't worked), and to fix our penalty killing. Creating the space to do that is going to be tricky but thats how we get to the next level imo. (And this is already looking like a playoff team under Bruce)

The Tyler Motte situation is interesting. I know he's in line for his best contract, and is an obvious piece to recoup assets, but.... I just think he's too important to lose. This 4th line is the most effective one we've had as long as I can remember, & he's the one who drives it. Having that line really makes our team a lot better. Plus penalty killing, and being a go-to option when trying to close out a game like last night. I know we've gotten in trouble with bottom six contracts before, but I don't think he'll be easy to replace

Canucks twitter is definitely a crap heap. The thing I don't get about the tankists is who are they expecting to get that would be better building blocks? Hughes & Demko are top 10 at their positions (Demko maybe T5) and they are on amazing contracts. Hogs/Podz are good secondary FWDs that'll be cheap for awhile (I think Hog will sign a team friendly bridge), and then you have Pettersson. Plus Miller, Horvat & OEL still have good years in them. Maybe you make some moves to clear cap, maybe you move Brock to address the defense, but it's time to keep pushing forward not looking back.

This chase is so much more fun than the death marches we've had in previous years. Can't believe some ppl want us to fold up the tent & pack it in.
