2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
Smashian Kassian replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Its hard ignore Caufield breaking the NTDP goal record while DeBrincat scores 40 goals. But still size is a consideration. Things haven't been working out for Yamamoto. Ultimately Caufield's gotta score alot to be a player. Krebs & Boldy bring more to the table than just goal scoring. The balancing act is weighing Caufield's goal-scoring potential & his likeliness of hitting it, versus a safer pick with thsoe other guys. I do think Caufield will move up the rankings soon (certainly on Bobby Mac's list). -

Yeah he's a real interesting case. The idea of adding a 5'6 player with our 1st pick isn't appealing to me either but that kid can score goals. You'll never mistake what he brings, he's gotta score to be successful. DeBrincat scored 40, can Caufield score 40? -
TSN 1040 & SN 650: What station do you prefer?
Smashian Kassian replied to dpn1's topic in Canucks Talk
Prefer 1040 for sure. H&B is my favourite show on either station. Don't usually listen to the other 1040 shows, but 1040 has great guests so I checkout alot of the audio clips. 650 often has terrible reception first & foremost. I do like Canucks central. Really enjoy listening to Auld as an analyst. And I like listening to Sat & Jawn for their draft talk/guests. Don't really care for much else though. The morning show is worse than Pratt, don't care about reachdeep. I respect Rintoul & think Walker has his place, but don't listen to them other than their hits with Friedman. One of the noticeable differences I find is interviews. Most the 650 guys are too long-winded in their questions. I'm sure it doesn't help that 650 has the rights, but I'll just put it this way; If there's an interview with Jim Benning happening I'd much rather it be on 1040. Thought H&B knocked it out of the park when they had Jim on before the deadline. -
[Proposal] Demko for Ristolainen
Smashian Kassian replied to aGENT's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Love the Trouba idea. If he's available & willing to sign long term I'd be all over trying to work out a deal with Winnipeg. Depending on where our 1st round pick is, I'd definitely consider putting it in play for Trouba. -
2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
Smashian Kassian replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
We are currently sitting #9. We are 3 points up on Edmonton & no games in hand, so its unlikely we fall lower than that. Here's my top 15 as of now: 1. Kakko 2. Hughes 3. Dach 4. Byram 5. Turcotte 6. Podkolzin 7. Cozens 8. Soderstrom 9. Krebs 10. Zegras 11. Boldy 12. Heinola 13. Caufield 14. York 15. Kaliyev So our potential slots are 1-3 & 9-12. Here's what I think at each spot: #1 - if we win its Hughes. Not going to debate who I'd prefer. Would be beyond shocked if the Nucks pass on the 2nd Hughes bro. IMO Kakko is better right away, Hughes has a higher ceiling long term. Both could play next year & be great for a long time. #2 - Perfect spot to be in. Take whoever doesn't go #1. #3 - Take Byram ---------------- #9-12 - Unless there's a faller, Soderstrom. Not elite #1 upside, but good Top 4 D are hard to find if you don't draft em. And if not him, then a FWD obviously. Krebs / Boldy / Zegras / Caufield would be the names for me. I flip flop on the order, but Krebs is probably the guy I like most. Although if we're closer to 12 than 9 there may only be 1 or 2 of them available. Any of them would be a good addition. -

Pete's improved. Quicker than Pettersson was in his draft year for sure. -

Juolevi has more upside IMO. Wouldn't do it. I definitely can too. They need immediate help & don't have alot of assets. I don't think I'd move that high a pick for either one of those guys, more so Severson. Don't really see them as legit top pair D. Although I get the appeal w/ Ristolanien. Don't hate the idea but it depends who's available at the pick & on the trade block. Could get a really good D prospect with that pick. Soderstrom & Heinola are already playing in top pro leagues in Europe. So who knows, they might not be quite that far away. -
[Proposal] Demko for Ristolainen
Smashian Kassian replied to aGENT's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I was gunna comment on this in the draft thread. I see alot of people this year are down on Ristonlanien. I don't know if he would be at the top of my list for D men to target although you certainly love his tools. For the Canucks Demko for Risto is pretty good value. Goalies don't generally have alot of value especially ones that aren't proven, even if Ristolanien is having a down year. Don't think Buffalo does it though. Would I do it if possible? I guess. Don't think it is though. -

I think Zegras is around 5'11. Doesnt look 6'1. And doesnt really play any bigger than Caufield does from what ive seen. Button is really exaggerating that comp imo. Zegras is alot quicker than Pettersson, & hes a great playmaker. Doesnt have a good shot & not as good defensively. (Also doesnt go to the net as much imo). Looks like Jack Hughes when u watch him. Id say Jack Hughes lite or Keller with a lesser shot is a better styleistically. Don't see petey myself. Who would u rank higher in general? Ive been a bit down on Zegras, but upon reflection I kinda see him being a winger rather than a C. And with his playmaking skills he could pile up assists. -

If both are available at our pick: Caufield or Zegras? -
As a 'Nucks-Backer, What Burns Your Bacon?
Smashian Kassian replied to Nuxfanabroad's topic in Canucks Talk
I remember being at game 4 (think it was) in 2010. And there was the goal he scored when Luongo had the puck covered in his gear, and Byfuglien just used his stick & shoveled Lu completely into the net. I couldn't believe it counted it a goal. Absolutely insane to think back on that now with how much goalie interference has changed. Lu even made reference to that goal when he was on 31 thoughts. -

Keith for the elbow on Daniel. I look back at that 2012 & the road to the cup was the easiest I can think of in recent memory. With Daniel we won then lost in OT. Totally tanked our chances at the cup that year IMO. Then of course Marchand. Not because of the SCF, but the low bridge on Salo. I respect Marchand's talents as a player. I know he's tried & done a decent job cleaning up his image recently. But I'll always think of him as a cowardly rat for that. On one of the cleanest players & more respected veterans around the league. Cowardly move at its worst. As far as teams, from 2012 to 14/15 I absolutely hated losing to LA, hated those guys. (Over that now that they suck). Boston & Toronto are natural ones. I hate losing to CGY nowadays. Chicago was an intense rivalry that I really miss alot. Looking back I have alot of respect for those Hawks teams. (the odd guy aside). In 2013 when they were against LA & Boston I jumped on the Hawks bandwagon big time (not gunna lie). Kane really cemented himself as one of my favorite players of this gen during that run. -

For me the tiers are looking like 1/2: Hughes, Kakko 3-5: Dach, Byram, Turcotte 6/7: Podkolzin, Cozens Then 8-13: Heinola, Krebs, Caufield, Soderstrom, Zegras, Boldy The 8-13 could go in any order. Hard to rank. Thats where we'll pick. I think Soderstrom should be a top consideration. Chance to add a projected Top4 (potentially top pair) RHD. Would be a great fit for us. -
Would've been nice to see him play a bit more in the 3rd, but hes still adjusting to the NHL. I dont have a problem sheltering him. When it comes to moving the puck quickly hes already one of our best D but you can see he needs a bit of work covering under sustain pressure. I think he's already improved from the Brown shift against LA (more attentative), but no sense putting him in over his head. As long as hes not totally benched im fine with it. Would like to see him get around 15 mins p/g (atleast) from here on out. And hopefully some shifts on PP1.

Agreed, I don't see Boldy as a driver either. He's a smart player though, that happens to be 6'3 & moves well. I think he could be a really good complimentary top 6 W. Like 25-25-50 production or more (maybe 30-30-60+), and a complete game. I'd probably take him over Newhook tbh. I like Newhook's skating/skill but he's more comparable as a BCHL prospect to Jost than Turris upside wise IMO. One guy I'm not quite as high on is Zegras. I know alot of people really like his talent & see a ton of upside. He does look like Jack Hughes the way he skates & handles the puck. But he plays more of a perimeter game. I just think if he's a C in the NHL he'll be a 2nd line C (ideally). Could be a Keller like winger, but I don't think he's quite as good a prospect as Keller was either for that matter. I don't doubt his playmaking or that he could be a productive T6F though. The way the game is going, I could look really bad doubting him, but hey. Got him 10-12 range ATM. -

I see him kinda like Spezza in his prime. Or maybe Getzlaf like without the nasty side. Id delighted to get Dach. Edit: or even like Schiefele/Johansen -

If we get #3 I think we should just take Byram. The guy you get with the extra 20-45 range pick will be a project. Take Byram, build around he & Hughes on the backend. Then see where Juolevi fits in, maybe eventually u move a D for a FWD. The NTDP guy im curious about is Alex Vlasic. Probably a 2nd round guy but I wonder what he could be as a prospect. Not too famillar with him. -

I wonder what it would take for a team at 4 or 5 to trade picks with us so we could get Byram. -

I'm with you on him being a lottery pick. I keep flip flopping him & Dach at #3. To me Byram is easily a top 5 pick. I think I get what you mean. They ended up losing Saturday night, but when the game was close Byram kept trying to rush the puck or sneak in from the line to get his team back in it. He just had that vibe like he wanted to make a big play for his team. He's got something alright. He's the kind of defenseman we really need. -

He's so impressive. I keep thinking he's the next Morgan Rielly.
