  1. My son played competitive hockey during his high school years so I believe I know a bit of what I'm talking about here. None of the kids who get to that level do it without having gone through countless hours of stick handling, power skating, checking, shooting, weight training classes. The only way you could have a pull-up with that form is if you were injured or slacking off.
  2. I think you guys are all misreading the concerns here - it's not about doubting Mittelstadt's strength or skill; it's about common sense. The form he showed in the picture shows someone who didn't care enough to prepare (either that or he is injured or deliberately tanking it). If you were in his shoes, would any of you not even bother preparing for everything in the small list of combine tests given to you by the league? If your honest answer is 'yes', I'd love to know why. Henrik did pull-ups. Why wouldn't you think Wayne couldn't do one? If you think that Wayne produced those numbers just because of his hockey IQ, you're mistaken. The guy's fit.
  3. Oh, I'm not bashing his dedication. I'm wondering about his common sense. They're 2 completely different things, and they're both important.
  4. Ah, so preparation for something expected by the league and other GM's is not a meaningful skill for you, then. Got it. Carry on.
  5. Bennett was supposedly injured during that time - labrum issue or something. Again, you're not getting it from the Canucks' perspective: we are looking for at Mittelstadt as a potential 1C and it's not all about points or skills - leadership is important. Can you honestly tell me that that performance shows good leadership?
  6. Do you think Henrik or Linden or Bo would have come to this combine unprepared to do even a single pull-up? They would have had the common sense to prepare. Now, if it turns out that Mittelstadt was injured, then that's another story, but if he was not injured, that speaks volumes about his preparation. Again, all you need to do is look at his pull-up form.
  7. To me, it's not so much that his poor pull-up and bench press performance means he's physically weak. It's that that it makes him look like he came unprepared (even his form looked pretty bad). Preparation is going to be key when he makes it to the NHL if you are going to be a first-line center. You can't rely on just pure talent and skill alone.
  8. If you want Gabe, then best case scenario is: Not Gabe Not Gabe Not Gabe Not Gabe Gabe
  9. I know a lot of people are saying that with Colorado thinking of trading Duchene, they want to have another center, but I think Joe Sakic really believes in Tyson Jost as a 2C so they're set with Mackinnon and Jost. So I have Colorado taking a D-man at 4. So if we have the 3 and 5, maybe 3 would be the D-man?
  10. You clearly didn't bother reading the other poster's post - he said, "doing a pull up with your palms facing outward is not easy...I would bet most of the posters on here couldn't do a pull up either." He is wrong - doing a few pull-ups with palm facing outwards is easy; a non-athlete like me can do it. I posted this before, but that form that Mittelstadt shows in the picture is very, very weird - only someone that has never tried a pull-up before or is injured in one side or is intentionally tanking it would have that form.
  11. I can do 10 palm facing outwards and 15 palm facing inwards one set after another and either wide or narrow. I'm 5'10", under 160 lbs. (if that matters). I only go to the gym twice a week. No steroids. Pullups are not hard. If you're struggling with it, go get a weight vest and condition your arms and your back to the heavier weight.
  12. His form in that picture is so bad. He can't be intentionally tanking it to fall to a certain team, could he?
  13. After this week's combine, I believe we need to do all we can to get Nico Hischier.

We have nothing to offer New Jersey to go to 1st overall. And I would not be surprised if he's taken 1st.

I'm not sold on Makar. He could be a boom or bust type of player. The skill is there. But he's also in junior A.

He's also rated #9 by central scouting. He's going to UMass. So he doesn't help us for 2-4 years.

I agree, but the Canucks would likely need to get #1 to guarantee they will get Hischier.

  14. Ok, using the top 25 list from https://link.nhl.com/centralscouting/public/, here are how the candidates that I care about fared (basically, the top athletes are Yamamoto, Makar, Foote, Liljegren, Hischier, Suzuki): CENTERS: Nolan Patrick: 14: Musculoskeletal: Bench Press 14: Musculoskeletal: Pull-Ups Consecutive (max #) Hischier: 13: Agility & Balance: Pro Agility Right 13: Anaerobic Fitness: Peak Power Output (watts/kg) 2: Musculoskeletal: Pull-Ups Consecutive (max #) 24: Musculoskeletal: Standing Long Jump (in) Vilardi (I believe he didn't participate in all tests): 11: Aerobic Fitness: Test Duration 2: Anaerobic Fitness: Fatigue Index Glass: 20: Agility & Balance: Pro Agility Left 24: Agility & Balance: Pro Agility Right Mittelstadt: 5: Anaerobic Fitness: Fatigue Index 20: Force Plate: Vertical Jump (inches) Necas: 3: Anaerobic Fitness: Fatigue Index Pettersson 3: Anaerobic Fitness: Mean Power Output (watts/kg) 7: Anaerobic Fitness: Peak Power Output (watts/kg) Michael Rasmussen 4: Aerobic Fitness: Test Duration 3: Anthropometry: Wing Span (inches) Suzuki 9: Aerobic Fitness: Test Duration 9: Aerobic Fitness: VO2max 20: Agility & Balance: Pro Agility Right 25: Force Plate: Vertical Jump (inches) DEFENSEMAN: Makar: 8: Agility & Balance: Pro Agility Left 3: Agility & Balance: Pro Agility Right 8: Anaerobic Fitness: Fatigue Index 5: Force Plate: Vertical Jump (inches) 10: Musculoskeletal: Standing Long Jump (in) Liljegren: 22: Anaerobic Fitness: Mean Power Output (watts/kg) 11: Anaerobic Fitness: Peak Power Output (watts/kg) 17: Force Plate: Vertical Jump (inches) 8: Musculoskeletal: Standing Long Jump (in) Heiskanen: 24: Anaerobic Fitness: Peak Power Output (watts/kg) Callan Foote: 3: Aerobic Fitness: Test Duration 21: Aerobic Fitness: VO2max 7: Agility & Balance: Pro Agility Left 14: Agility & Balance: Pro Agility Right 12: Anthropometry: Wing Span (inches) WINGERS: Tippett: 23: Anaerobic Fitness: Fatigue Index 14: Force Plate: Vertical Jump (inches) Yamamoto: 1: Aerobic Fitness: VO2max 2: Agility & Balance: Pro Agility Left 2: Agility & Balance: Pro Agility Right 4: Anaerobic Fitness: Mean Power Output (watts/kg) 3: Anaerobic Fitness: Peak Power Output (watts/kg) 6: Musculoskeletal: Pull-Ups Consecutive (max #)
  15. Pettersson won't be measured until the last hour of the day - this gives him some time to do the Super Size Me training.
  16. Here's what Scouching had to say about Pettersson: "It’s no secret to the five of you who read these that I’m very high on Elias Pettersson, and I believe the Canucks are in on the party as well. They went out and acquired his partner in crime Jonathan Dahlen from Ottawa for Alex Burrows. They must have seen the duo play together, and now that they’ve fallen a bit in the draft, I’m led to believe that Pettersson will be their guy. Pettersson was almost a point per game, registering >3 points per hour, on a team that scored just 2.5 goals per game. His INV% (Player PPG/Team GPG) is 38%, which is enormous for a first year eligible in a men’s league. He also had a primary point (goal or first assist) on 60% of goals at even strength. For reference, Nolan Patrick was a 51.4%, Hischier, and Vilardi were at 64%, and Mittelstadt finished with a 60%. Pettersson may be one of the most underrated players in the draft, and if he can learn to play a more dynamic game at various speeds, he could be a lethal centre in the NHL in a short period of time. He has the size, production, instincts and IQ to make a jump, and watching him in the SHL with Vaxjo should be very interesting next year." (from: https://scouching.wordpress.com/2017/05/01/scouchings-2017-post-lottery-mock-draft/)
  17. The guy in your profile pic (Jake Virtanen) could give Elias Pettersson tips on how to put on weight.
  18. Pass It To Bullis had some good things to say about Pettersson here: http://www.vancourier.com/pass-it-to-bulis/should-the-canucks-draft-elias-pettersson-1.20342866. Apparently, an analytics guy had him rated number 3 overall behind Hischier and Patrick: https://scouching.wordpress.com/2017/05/26/scouchings-2017-final-draft-rankings/ . The same guy had us picking him at number 5. Pettersson may even have more skills than Mittelstadt who I think is already pretty skilled. I personally wouldn't feel bad about us picking him at 5.
  19. Just checked Wikipedia entry for Gabriel Vilardi and am now 100% sure Canucks want Vilardi: "Vilardi was born to Italian parents".

Wasn't aware of how bad that North-South divide was so perhaps Vilardi's not the target this year. :P Perhaps Joe Veleno next year?

  20. Is it wrong to read into that that the Canucks seem to have spent the most time with Vilardi?
  21. If it's just the Torts pick that you want to add as a sweetener, then it's clearly not Gold that you're thinking...
  22. The last time I said that I wasn't holding my breath on a potential Benning trade, he got us Dahlen and Goldobin! So I'm again not holding my breath that we will be able to move up to the top 2 spots in this year's draft.

Patrick reminds me of Linden - nothing fancy but effective.

  24. Hmm, should I cheer for Yannick Weber or Nick Bonino? Since Bonino won it last year, I guess it's Weber.

I forgot Yannick was still in the league
