  1. Imho, many of us here are fixated on drafting our future 1C or 1D because we think that we don't need any more wingers, but if the BPA is a winger who is a potential top 3 forward, we should draft that guy. Tippett may not have the best vision, but he sure knows how to score goals. If we get him, I will just have to trust our scouts.
  2. I read it in the hfboards from someone that's supposedly in the know. Also, supposedly, in one of his European trips a few months back, Jim Benning was scouting Necas specifically. Take it for what it's worth.
  3. In a lot of the highlights that I've seen, he's actually playing against men so it's even more impressive what he can do. From what I've heard, the Canucks have their Center rankings may be something like the following: Casey Mittelstadt Martin Necas Cody Glass Gabriel Vilardi
  4. Supposedly the Canucks are really high on him. Positives for me from this video and others: Kid is feisty Kid has quick feet (something I'm not sure Vilardi or Glass have) Has good skills Non-stop motor (because of this, I almost see him as a winger rather than a center) From the way he celebrates (really engages his teammates; quite joyful), seems to have a lot of leadership skills - reminds me of Tyson Jost somehow Areas of improvement: more head movement to see the whole ice needs to bulk up as he keeps getting pushed around his shooting needs work
  5. In some camps, that may not mean anything as the team may just be trying to mask their interest in a player that they are hoping to fall to them, but in the case of "Honest Jim" Benning, I think it's a sign that they're really not interested in him.
  6. Casey and Cale are actually who I want the Canucks to pick - in that order. Both would need quite a bit of seasoning on the defensive side, but the upside's huge as both have excellent explosiveness, hockey IQ, mobility, stick handling, shooting. Biggest questions marks on either are level of competition this season.
  7. The more I watch Makar, the more I think his game's closer to PK than EK.

I'd still take PK in a heartbeat.

That's not necessarily a bad thing

Not a bad thing. PK has the ability to turn the game on its head. Something we haven't had from the backend since forever.

  8. There's no consensus on the ceilings, though. Some people have Vilardi's and Glass's ceiling as 2C due to skating (from the articles I've read, they're not talking about technique which can be taught but just pure athletic ability). Some people have Heiskanen, Lijljegren, and Makar's ceiling as 1D. In the case of Mittelstadt, so far, I've only seen 1C, and definitely one of the reasons I like him.
  9. After the first 2, the consensus is all out of the window. I can honestly see Philly, Dallas and Colorado considering all of the names mentioned: Mittelstadt, Vilardi, Glass, Tippett, Liljegren, Makar, Heiskanen, Tolvanen, and even Rasmussen selected (hey, the last 3 names rhyme; since we already have Virtanen, won't it be cool if...NO!)
  10. I love the Glass' leadership and the joy on his face. I think he would definitely fit the character of the Canucks. Note that I've only seen the highlights, but my concerns about the kid are: His acceleration is average. He's definitely not shifty. While Cody seems to make the right play, I don't see the creativity.
  11. Casey Mittelstadt reminds me a lot of William Nylander in both game (skill and athletic ability) and face.

  12. You got my heart going there! I thought that from your post the lottery was already done and we dropped to third.
  13. Tight End Jake Butt on Broncos. I somehow found that funny. Maybe I need to get coffee first...

Pretty happy about the pick though.

Nah, it'd still be funny after coffee.  Especially if Jake had a brother named Rod.

Not looking forwarded to seeing him covered by Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.

  14. The more I watch Ottawa (well, Karlsson) this playoffs and the more I watch film of the D-men this year, I'm no longer feeling depressed about possibly landing at 5. Here are my top 5: Nolan Patrick Nico Hischier Miro Heiskanen Cale Makar Timothy Liljegren Not saying that Heiskanen or Makar or Liljegren will be Karlsson, but I definitely think they have a chance. They are all actually pretty skilled and athletic and have the requisite high IQ on both ends of the ice. I am actually salivating at imagining Juolevi and one of those guys zipping all over the ice and making play after play on both ends. We can get our Center another way or another time.
  15. So excited today! After today, we can finally make valid trade proposals now that we know at which spot we and the other teams are picking.

  16. Yup, according to TSN, half of the scouts now pick Nolan and the other half pick Nico. For as long as we pick top 2, it'll be pretty good. I actually think that there are potentially 3 D-men that could be top pairing D-men in the NHL: Heiskanen, Liljegren, and Makar.
  17. I watched Patrick's team this year, and his linemates and D-men are not what I would call strong. Can't even do breakout passes.
  18. Adidas just sent an apology email for using the word "survive" when referring to a post-Boston Marathon ad. They said they were insensitive to those affected by the terrorist bombing. I get it, but does this mean all of us should now be afraid to use phrases like 'I survived' or 'I'm dying here' or 'this is killing me' when participating in a marathon?

    1. Fateless

      Fateless

Just another example of political correctness gone too far. The slogan "I survived the Boston Marathon" has been around for a REALLY long time - well before the terrorist bombing. People that get offended at that phrase now have let the terrorists win - they've let the terrorists dictate and shape their lives rather than showing them that their lives, their marathon, and their dignity is beyond the terrorist's reach.

  19. Vesalainen has been putting on a show. He is actually quite skilled and has size. The biggest knock on him this year is why he wasn't putting up the huge numbers that everyone was expecting. Based on this tournament, he's probably a lottery pick now. But if he ever drops in the second round, we should nab him.
  20. I get the injury concern, but I also think that our team doctors will do a good job with this so I'm personally going to rely on their suggestion. My biggest concern with all of the injury talk is if we do get lucky and draft Nolan Patrick, because of all the posts here where people are acting like doctors (without even seeing his medical report), you'll all of a sudden get a lot of posters in this forum ready to crucify the pick so instead of the pick being a ray of hope, it ends up being unreasonably bashed. In terms of risk and reward, the way I see this is that outside of injury concerns, guys like Button, McKenzie, etc. think he's completely deserving of being the number 1 pick. His upside is very high. The only risk is really his injury, but imho, that can be de-risked by having good doctors.
  21. Gotta love this "rumblings" and "apparently" and "might/may". There are always a lot of misinformation going out when it's draft time. Sometimes, it's because a team really wants a player and hopes that the player will drop to them, and the team starts throwing out fake bad rumours about that player or start throwing out amazing news about another player - the Vancouver Grizzlies did that with Olowakandi; he had a workout with them, and they told everyone who was willing to listen that he was off the charts, and sure enough, Olowakandi went number 1 and the Grizzlies happily took Mike Bibby with their second overall pick. Take this Nolan Patrick's supposed attitude problem which came from I believe an unnamed opposing coach/scout. His coach vouches for him and his work ethic; his teammates vouch for him; everyone knows he just came back from injury (in fact, he was playing hurt as evidenced by him missing the playoffs); he comes from a solid family background; he is humble; he's willing to take punches for the team. The guy's character is impeccable. As for his injuries, let the team doctors do their job. Unless you think that the Canucks' missing the playoffs is because of injuries which is because of the team doctors... And if you want to go by comparison, then Makar and Liljegren are being compared to Karlsson so just use the pick to get one of them or even better, trade all of our prospects for another pick to get both and we should be getting a Stanley Cup within 3 years.
  22. Yes, correct. But just so that it doesn't get too depressing in a draft where there are only 2 sure-fire studs, one should switch between 2 questions: What draft position are the Canucks likely to get? Answer: fourth. Who has the second-best chance to get the top pick and who has the second-best (could be top if Colorado gets top pick) chance to get the second pick? Answer: the Canucks.
  23. Anaheim reminds me of the Detroit Pistons' Bad Boys days. Calgary's going to have to earn this, and all their best players are going to leave this series with some pretty sore bodies and even injuries. Kesler is just built for the playoffs.

  24. Maybe so, but notice how quickly all the other players got back as well...
