  1. The Canucks acquire Sven Baertschi from the Flames for a 2nd round pick Adam Forsythe March 2, 2015 2:40 pm VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Canucks trade deadline ended with a splash. Vancouver acquired Sven Baertschi from the Calgary Flames for a 2015 2nd round pick. The 22-year old was the 13th overall pick in the 2011 NHL draft. The Swiss prospect has appeared in 15-games for the Flames this season collecting four assists. Canucks General Manager Jim Benning says its always tough to trade draft picks, but he made an exception to acquire Baertschi. “He is ready to come in and help us win this year and every year going forward. I don’t like trading draft picks but to get a player of Sven’s calibre, I am okay with that.” Baertschi will report to the Utica Comets, but Benning says he could be in line to be recalled if the Canucks are hit with more injuries. Comets Head Coach Travis Green coached Baertschi in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks and Benning says Green is very exciting to have him on the team.
  2. A lot of you guys that watch games have no idea what you even see. Robson was also well known for taking time to say "a special hello to all the hospital patients and shut-ins, those of you who can't make it out to the game", during each of his broadcasts, both on radio and TV. Note the 'radio' part,Swift. These days there is in-depth analysis from every end of the hockey spectrum. Add in youtube and radio programs with interviews and real experts expressing their opinions, like NHL players, past and present. It would be interesting to note how many CDC'ers can skate, let alone have played hockey, but put them in front of a tv and they become CDC hockey gods with superior hockey knowledge and opinions.
  3. Gillis never once used his Russian scout during his six years on the job so it's not even realistic to even consider he would ever educate himself on an elite Russian player and dare to take one at #9.Within weeks as GM Benning drafts a Russian that has two years of KHL experience under his belt at 19 years of age. “The (KHL) money is not an issue,” Tryamkin said with Chibisov translating. “Coming to the NHL is the next step in (my) career. It’s the best league in the world. “I want to come.” Asked to describe the type of player he is, Tryamkin said: “I’m a defensive d-man who can join the rush once in a while,” Tryamkin said. “I can handle myself in a fight and protect my teammates.” Under Mike Gillis, the Canucks did not draft a Russian by policy, and it’s in part why they missed on Valeri Nichuskin last year. But Benning told Canucks Russian scout Sergei Chibisov that drafting players from the Motherland is finally a go again. “Jim said there is no issue there,” Chibisov said. http://blogs.theprovince.com/2014/06/28/canucks-can-draft-russians-again-and-they-get-a-huge-one/
  4. Gillis went that way. I see Benning having a proclivity for talent, regardless of birth place. Tryamkin Forsling Pedan
  5. Pretty sure that will always be Coho>Kassian. Bo stands alone, unless you want to start dissing Schneider,as well.
  6. Mogilny : 308 points in 312 regular season games as a Canuck
  7. There is a need for a top four d man.
  8. Benning needs options in trade and that is the likely the best case scenario for Sestito and the Canucks. That leaves Horvat going back to junior in the best interests of the club. The team should make room for him in a deal in the next few days,if they want to keep him here now.
  9. Yet Richardson is outscoring Hansen,Kassian,Matthias and Dorsett.
  10. Bo would have to have exceptional skating abilities. Skating backwards as good and/or better than skating forwards is a skill that is learned over many years. Only extremely exceptional skaters could make this particular transition at the NHL level. A competitive NHL team is not thinking of going down that road unless Bo began playing hockey at D or played the position at some point in time during his playing life. The young man would do well to go back to junior in December, play a few weeks in London, have Christmas with his family and play out the season for his team. In the new year he has a half year left in his junior career. His experience here will give him the knowledge base of how much he needs to do to compete and stay at the elite,NHL level.
  11. 45 points for an undrafted 33 year old second line winger would be a-ok.
  12. With just weeks left in the offseason my feeling is the team will be competitive but not a contender.Let's see what Benning brings to the hopeful.

We'll be competitive and we'll be in close games. But I'm not sure we'll make the playoffs.

BanTSN doesn't even believe the Canucks can win the draft lottery.

Maybe he likes Eichel more. For one I like Eichel more than Mcdavid at this point.

  13. Aqua will pay him $6.5 million this year. http://www.capgeek.com/player/662 If he is relegated to third line status he needs to go to make room for a cheaper, younger option.
  14. Love Burr ,but if I am Aqua man paying out $alaries I would be choked to pay out $8m last year. I would also seriously question if I should pay out $6.5 million for him this year and if I could get out of the contract,I would. The league is not about warm and fuzzy feelings and past glory. It's a business. So,yes,it is all about 'what have you done lately'. So,Burr has to produce cuz $6.5 million is a lot of buckwheat or beer or whatever.
  15. It's a retool supported by superior player assessment with an adequate pipeline of legitimate youth that will compete for jobs in years to come. The Sedins should do much better because this year they actually have a line mate that is exceptionally skilled. The PP made the Nucks a success and hopefully the twins will attain previous acclaim with the PP. As for entry level contract contributors,it seems Gillis forgot that small detail when hs focus was trading picks to win at all costs. Benning has explicitly stated his vision and operational plan and that is how this NHL GM will build this good hockey team into a better one.
  16. Goaltending and PP shored up. Second line/D tinkering and we're good to go-with three months left til the season begins.

benning says they will go with what they have to start season....see what they've got and go from there...expect 2 to 3 years to rebuild this team.

Sure,if we are talking Stanley Cup contender status,Joe.

That is a lofty perch and only two teams survive regular seasons and playoffs to reach the finals.

I believe Benning has brought the team to compete levels now and a couple more significant tweaks can notch that up to contender levels.

There has been a lot of addition by subtraction along with a wholesale change in management and direction.

Those are multiple intangibles that has positively altered this team,already...

  17. So far,so good.Team has goaltending.Need some scoring but the FA day is young.

  18. This team is a competitor with a very good goaltender. Miller fits that bill.
  19. The NHL regular season is not the time to be feeling out unproven goaltenders, unless next season is about stocking up on more assets for the following season.
  20. "Piece of CRAP" ? Wow. You have been here a month on CDC. My guess is you don't make it here before Jake's shoulder heals.
  21. Gillis signed contracts while Benning ran an NHL team. Gillis was in law school while Benning was an NHL scout. Benning will have continuously consulted all his scouts at every step and Gillis would have had little to no idea where to begin.
  22. Because the best player in the draft is Ekblad and he is the target if you are going for #1. This team has a plethora of center ice men and no franchise puck movers to build a team around going forward.
  23. I was not referring to whatever your prior stance is. Why trade a decent, top -4 d man(what Florida allegedly asked for),the sixth overall and a decent prospect unless the club is getting what Florida has-which is the rights to the best player in the draft in Ekblad?
  24. Why would JB take Reinhart with the #1 when we have Henriik with Horvat,Cassels,Fox,Gaunce, Kesler for the 2nd and third lines? Santo and Shinkaruk can play center. Then there are the remaining two veterans that presently occupy the center slots in the 3rd and 4th lines. He loses assets and trades up for Ekblad only. Reinhart is not even in this equation.
