  1. Gillis was $2-$2.5 million off on his offer to Ehrhoff. There was nothing fair about it. When you get it together you can get past apologising for Gillis.
  2. Gillis stated he would not pay Ehrhoff any more than Bieksa and publicly berated Ehrhoff when he did not accept the Bieksa contract.Bieksa signed his contract in mid-June so Gillis had weeks to negotiate a fair deal with Christian before he hit FA . There was no "insane deal" from Regier as Ehrhoff was under contract to Vancouver when Gillis low balled him and refused to offer him fair value. Ehrhoff anchored the highest scoring team and best PP in the league (15g 36a 50 pts) as opposed to Bieksa's 6g 16a 22 pts. "We're still talking about different possibilities, but like I said earlier, playing on this team is more important than individual compensation," Gillis said. "That's our expectation with everybody. It works with some but it may not work with others. I can't tell you what I expect. We'll just see how it goes. If he's unwilling to accept what we think is fair and allows us to be competitive, we'll go in a different direction." Hours later, the Canucks went in a different direction. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=567612 Ehrhoff, who tied for seventh among NHL defencemen this season with 50 points, also seems to realize that if he wants to stay in Vancouver he'll have to accept less than what he'd get on the open market. "I just want something that is fair and obviously if I end up staying here it's natural that you have got to come their way a little bit," Ehrhoff said. "It's just meeting at the right point, you know." Although he has only been a Canuck for two seasons, Ehrhoff said he too has a loyalty to the team "I'm very appreciative for what this organization has done for me in the short two years I have been here," he said. "Like I said many times before, I like the group of guys, I like where this team is going and we were very close this year and I think we can be a very good team for years to come and I'd definitely like to be part of that." 3. "But it was pretty obvious at the time that Ehrhoff, and rightly so IMHO, felt that he shouldn't have his salary determined by an arbitrary structure that said no one on the Canucks' D could make more that the $4.6 million Gillis awarded to Bieksa. Gillis broke his internal cap to retain Edler two years later. At the time of the Ehrhoff negotiations, I honestly believe that a $5 million to $5.5 million cap hit (on a reasonable term) would have gotten an extension done. Gillis refused to go above an offer that was identical to Bieksa's. That all said, the biggest mistake that Gillis made was not in letting Ehrhoff (and also Salo, Samuelsson, etc.) go. It was in failing to replace these players. " Sid is me x 3 I agree. Gillis did not replace the skill sets these players provided to the team's success and successful style of play. You can' t blame GIllis for trying to sign Christian for less but insulting him and refusing to offer a fair deal helps define Gillis' weakness in his arrogance/intransigence that ultimately led to his eventual downfall. Gillis arguing that he could replace losing Ehrhoff as the team had Salo and Tanev implies Gillis was a poor judge of talent and did not recognise his team's internal synergies, success and strength.
  4. One GM was a full time amateur, pro and NHL professional Director of Amateur Scouting, serving multiple NHL teams for a decade in this role. This GM also served as an assistant GM for six years,as well. The other GM negotiated contracts as the foundation of his talent evaluation skill set.
  5. Concussions are like when a computer gets dropped a few times- maybe there was a problem before with the computer but dropping it creates a whole new set of issues and compounds existing issues. A player that can no longer cognitively function at the highest levels often begins experiencing/accumulating other injuries.
  6. I guess if Santo and Burr were not injured this past year then Kes would not be getting slagged. Ditto Booth,MayRay,etc.. That's hockey.
  7. Marty turns 39 in a few weeks time. What a player. Hate NY but would love to see Marty hoist the cup and get the Conn Smythe / MVP award.
  8. Gillis tied up $19m of Aqua man's dough for a brain injured player that continued to suffer injuries as a Canuck. That deal helped shut the window by denying Kes a second line winger when blowing the remaining available cap space on a multtiple, severely concussed player. Gillis also recieved 35 year old Reinprecht in that deal,a player that never played in the NHL again, while paying out $2.175 m to ditch him in Chicago. $21m for a third liner and a third rounder.
  9. Looks like LA is headed for another cup win. Don't really like Chicago and New York so it is all about watching talented, exciting hockey for me.
  10. Ovie showing why the IIHF World Championship tournaments are relevant to Europe(eans). Shirokov with a great effort.
  11. The Booth and Luongo deals come to mind, amongst others.
  12. Good article. Lots of character definition/history. Scouting in the family and blood makes me feel comfortable having JB up front: He is a scouting rink rat, a guy so addicted to assessing and projecting players that even in management Benning continued to attend many junior and college games. He inherited the scouting chromosome from his father, Elmer, who at 73 has spent nearly four decades tracking amateur players in Alberta for the Montreal Canadiens. “He’s very smart, very honest,” one scout said. “He knows who’s going to play and who isn’t. He knows what’s going on all the time. And don’t let that quietness fool you. He’s intense. When he walks on to the draft floor he looks like he’s ready to fight Mike Tyson.”
  13. JB would be involved since the moment he decided to take the position. He is intense and thorough and will be engrossed in every aspect towards improving this team.
  14. Experienced NHL/Canucks d man that worked his way through organisations to command respect takes the position. I 'm an optomisitc Canucks fan today.
  15. Benning is a good fit and Trotz has had the good fortune of having an all -star d man anchor his team and cement his employment. Let's hope the Canucks secure an all star d -man as their first move during or after the draft.
  16. It has only been a few weeks and they can't get the story right.
  17. Watching Horvat play live has been instructive. Biggest stage of his playing career and he has showed up and played well defensively. He has not been offensively impressive so there is bound to be criticism. Horvat could be looking at another year of juniors after his 9 game NHL trial and that reality has bummed out a lot of fans who thought he would come in here and be the instant saviour.
  18. Skilled players want to play a skill game. Gillis dismantled that to a certain degree and Torts brought that to a conclusion. I hope the next coach and GM concentrate on puck possession and that begins from the back end. The team needs to focus on the most talented, available offensive d man it can afford and work out from there.
  19. Scheifle with the play of the game. Canada was lucky to win that one.
  20. Speaking of ridiculously long, the NHL playoffs began April 16th and will end in mid-June. Last year it ended in the last week in June. The NHL should use a different format to end the season in May again.
  21. Bieksa playing a huge role on this team and he is firing rockets today. Tight game so it's a good one.
  22. Two mile Gas and Diesel Bar, Anahim Lake, BC Looks like a one horse town and the cops are serving coffee. With that said,I am sure somebody has a bar open in a basement in that small place.Be serving up double shots of Grand Marnier or Drambuie in that coffee for the Habs fans.... In Anahim Lake there are two general stores, one of which provides fuel and propane, a gas station, medical clinic, a restaurant, take out restaurant, and RCMP Detachment.
  23. After what Messier did to tLinden in '94 I will never be a Rangers fan. Great hockey being played and I am enjoying it. Slats,Gretzky and Messier not so much.
  24. It's the individual's exceptional skills on display that is the show. It's not just about teams and that is what I don't understand with some fans and players. Anihim Lake,B.C. is fairly represented.I can imagine the bars were open early up there.
