[Official] Toronto Blue Jays Major League Baseball thread
Gollumpus replied to The Stork's topic in Off-Topic General
...sigh.... The more things change, the more they stay the same. The Giants were up 6-1 in the bottom of the 8th, with one out. The Giants starter (Gausman) was indeed looking to be a bit gassed, so he was pulled and the game was turned over to the bullpen. Pretty standard. They looked a bit rough, but they got through the inning without any further damage. Now, in previous years, the Giants bullpen would act like a bunch of guys who had no idea that the strike zone was located in front of the batter, not behind him, or even in his ribs, but it's the first game of the season and hope springs eternal... Sure enough, the Mariners score 6 runs to take a 7-6 lead. The giants did manage to get a run in the top of the 9th, so I'll see what happens next... regards, G. Edit: Yup, lost it in the bottom of the 9th. There's been a curse on the Giants bullpen since after the 2014 Series. -

A loss to the franchise, and to the greater world. Schmautz was the epitome of a player who was part of a tough team. He had the offense, the skating and the checking, and he could (when necessary) fight. I have a recollection of one night vs Chicago, where Keith Magnusson was being his usual self. He provoked two fights with Schmautz, and there were something like a dozen punches thrown over the two scraps. In the first fight, while skating backwards, Schmautz threw around 10 punches into Magnusson's face before the altercation was broken up (Magnusson didn't land a single punch). Later in the game, they had a rematch, where Schmautz threw only 2 - 3 punches before Magnusson decided to save face (in a manner of speaking) and just went to the penalty box. Magnusson did get a bit of revenge a number of games later, where he goaded Schmautz into a fight, but he (Magnusson) kept his gloves on and turtled... the dick. regards, G.

Brief answer: before we get started, I'm assuming you haven't seen any of Dr. Who, rather than you haven't seen season 11 (yes? TL;DR below). This show has been around for over 50 years, with a couple of gaps in production of varying length, sometimes a couple of years, sometimes around a decade. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who Also, to get the time period correct, there's "season 11", which was filmed back in the 70s, and "series 11" which is part of a more current era, and covers the 15(ish) year period which started filming in 2005. I believe I was referring to the period with Matt Smith as the Doctor (2010 - 13). This BBC show had really low production values, but had very interesting scripts and themes which made up for a lot. It's quirky, funny and filled with all sorts of sci-fi babble which doesn't make any real sense, but can be explained away by "it's future technology". It's the classic western/cowboy TV trope of the hero(es) going from town to town and putting things right, only in place of a horse, the Doctor (and friends) use a TARDIS. The Doctor is a very interesting character, who is very smart, and is able to figure out just how to solve impossible problems, and resolve impossible situations. He is non-violent in nature - the Doctor would never use a gun to solve a problem - but this being said, he is not above tricking the bad guys into blowing themselves up. *The Doctor regenerates.* The character of the Doctor was kept fresh by having the actor in the role changed up every now and then (the longest serving Doctor was Tom Baker, at seven years the shortest term is shared by Paul McGann and Christopher Ecclestone at one season each. Each actor portrays a different, primary personality type, some seem to be very ordered in their thinking while others appear to be a bit manic. Some Doctors are kindly, while others are rather gruff and abrupt in nature. If you were to go down the Dr. Who rabbit hole, be aware that there is a lot of stuff to watch. I'm not sure that I would start with the first series (1963) as it just might be a bit too "old" looking. (sample) Later into the 70s might be good, if you like your Doctor being rather manic. The David Tennant Doctor is perhaps the most liked of the modern day crowd, and might be the best place to get your feet wet: TL;DR version: I would avoid the latest Doctor and series of episodes. The writing and storylines have taken a substantial downturn, so much so that their audience share has dropped through the floor. regards, G.

On April 1st, a few years ago, Band Maid released a couple of MVs under the name Band Maiko. They also changed up the maid outfits to geisha attire. It was said that these changes would be permanent..... There were interesting challenges which the band took upon themselves in writing these songs, in particular writing the lyrics to suit the formal Japanese dialect of the capitol region. Little things mean a lot. regards, G.

The background wall gives me a "Dr. Who" season 11(ish) kind of vibe: regards, G.

First place: A "dream" I've had, for quite a while, is to take a single baseball season and tour with the Giants. See every game and every team (thanks to the NL/AL cross-over games), home and away. This would require a lot of organization for accomodation, transport, game tickets, etc. etc. etc. It's something for when I win a very large lottery prize and could afford to pay someone to handle the logistics. Second place: would be to set up shop in SF for the season, with season tickets. There would be fewer games to see at Oracle (formerly AT&T) Park, but roadtrips to one of the farm teams that are fairly nearby could be interesting. I understand that there are some good restaurants and breweries down there, so maybe get mildly day drunk and go on lots of cable car rides when the team is out of town Third place: I'll have to settle for going here, which is kinda' cool. regards, G.

It is also quite interesting to see/hear what artists from other countries/cultures do with musical genres like Punk. I put some of these guys work up a few days ago: regards, G.

This situation brings to mind a scene from "The King of Hockey", an old film on hockey (surprise!). There is a part where the star player is sent to the penalty box, which he doesn't mind because he can chat up the woman he is courting. The woman's little sister asks him, "Why aren't you skating?" His response is, "...That referee out there is penalty crazy." When they showed this on HNIC (in segments over several weeks), they altered the scene just a bit, and when he makes the comment about the referee, the guys at the CBC inserted a few seconds of footage of Paul Stewart (the scene starts at 21:00ish, but sadly, doesn't include the Paul Stewart insert). regards, G.

This is a band which has been around for a lot longer than I recall them being together. Parts of this I like (a lot), other parts don't quite do anything for me. The drums are great, and I also like the bass: https://transductionrecords.com/artists/54-71 regards, G.

I gotta' admit that I am an idiot with regard to my past history on this topic. Initially I wasn't that interested in Punk as I viewed it as being too nihilistic, it was lacking in music ability (a quote from a review of a band back in the day - "Played their instruments with more energy than skill), and I avoided going to concerts here in Vancouver with various friends who were fully embracing this genre. I missed so many opportunities to see such great bands, and I kick myself quite often when I think about those times. Vancouver scene: The Disrags DOA No Fun Pointed Sticks The Subhumans Tim Ray and AV (maybe more New Waveish?) UJ3RK5 The Young Canadians (aka The K-Tels) Perhaps a decade after Punk started to wind down, my interest started to ramp up, but as noted above, there wasn't a lot going on with that scene. regards, G.

What are you Listening to...Video Game Edition

Interesting note, I rarely played any kind of video/cmpt game with the music track playing. I suppose I heard it enough to recognize the main theme. regards, G. -

Well, he seems to have put on some weight, he's wearing a hat, and he has his back to the camera (and one can't get a good look at his face in the reflection)... regards, G.
