[Discussion] If exposed would Seattle take Myers

Well to be fair THN probably had Myers protected by the Canucks. I would think that a Myers at 50% retention would have some value. -

I get ya there. Would be nice if we saw some actual picks be acquired lol This year with the covid crisis hit it. It's understandable that Jim choose not to uproot the players that didn't want to be moved. It was a humane decision rather than a hockey one. The problem with all of those contracts you mentioned isn't the cap value but the length. If they were a year shorter we'd have no issues but yeah they are a problem typically. Even Myers is a useful player but if his contact would've ran out a year earlier than it's line up with Horvat Miller and Hogs contracts renewals. The coming years the cap value of the players we acquire is going to matter though. But specifically with Pearson you can typically stomach a disappointing top 9 slotted player at the 3m range. -

There is little chance that Juolevi gets traded prior to the ED.. Juolevi is not worth an ED slot and I wouldn't be trading assets for a player to later expose him to the ED. Hamonic is likely going to resign here and Schmidt plays on the right efficiently so those 2 right-side defense provide more to me than Myers does.. That said I do think he is a good player and gets a bad rap around here for his deficiencies whilst ignoring the good parts of his game. In general our defense could use a shake-up and Myers has been here for 2 years so that would be one of the options to move off the 6m contract and look at other options. I admit I haven't looked hard at the RHD options, but looking at the list (in no particular order) https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/free-agents/2022/caphit/all/defense/all/desc/right?signing-status=ufa: Barrie Vatanen Ceci Montour Larsson Hamilton Poolman Pysyk Hakanpaa Seems like a few options from ranging from high-end and likely too expensive to stop-gap 1 year show-me-what-you-got type deals -

you're definition of quality seems pretty liberal here... I mean even with Pearson protected canucks have an extra spot to protect someone... hell you can protect Lind and Gadjovich if you want to expose Motte... This makes some sense.. Myers at 3m for 2 years seems like a good add for any team -

Yeah Bowey meets the exposure requirements. But there may be an ability to acquire an ED-eligible player from a team that can't protect them all. Thus the discussion on Myers, Bowey gives us the option if we want to or not which is a great option to have anyways. I mean the whole team struggled soooooo.... The year previous Pearson had 45 points... Like I'm not like a super fan of Pearson but people always seem to harp on a single bad season and fail to recognize the previous history like a singular snapshot is a clear indication of the future. I think he is and will be a consistent top 9 forward for us with the ability to play the PK and second PP and can step up to top 6 when injuries occurs... That has value to me and a 3.25m contract over 3 years does not break the bank for a player like that. -

goblix replied to goblix's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Yeah regardless he's not going to get exposed and quite frankly his 3y and 3.25m contract isn't a bad contract for a 28year old top9 forward that will kill penalties and can provide offense it's not a great contract but it's not a bad contract either. -

Yeah I doubt in the room it would do anything. But to the organization itself probably some animosity there... or maybe it drives him to be better who knows lol. If anything it may cause damage in the room if he was taken by Seattle and the players did not like that... But as a GM I think you sometimes have to be shrewd as long as it makes the team better. They do require protection slots... However they do not meet the exposure requirements of games played though which only means we need to ensure we have met that requirement with another exposed player check this out too fun little ED tool: https://www.capfriendly.com/expansion-draft/seattle -

I disagree with Pearson and Motte, they are definitely replaceable players but I don't think that necessarily means that they aren't protection worthy. On Schmidt I'm not going to get in that discussion here as well Agreed otherwise JB could really fill up some valuable exposed players but I think they will still cost a pretty penny to acquire so I doubt we will be able to add more than 1 or 2 players in that regard Yeah I agree that Schmidt is a better player and better value than Myers but that's why Schmidt is protected and the only option for Seattle is Myers and the others on the list Yeah I doubt Myers would be exposed as well.. If he was it'd be a pretty forward thinking move for JB though. I do think it'd be rather close for Seattle to pick Myers or a player like Lind / Gadjovich -

buying out a 4.3m cap hit leaves us 500k in kickback this year. signing a backup goalie with a ton of options is likely 2m tops... sooo overall that gives us 1.5m to 3m relief.. With Iain Clark (reported that the talks are going good) as the goalie coach i'll give it a go with pretty much any backup in the league that wants to sign cheap or there is DePietro if Canucks feel like they can play Demko like 50-55 games but I'd prefer to sign a backup myself yeah I gave you reasons why Schmidt likely had issues... hell on this team all of our defensemen had issues defendind, you don't get a team -37 goal differential because of a single player... Hughes had problems, Hamonic was bad at the start, Edler and Juolevi got turnstyled consistently, Myers gets too many penalties... etc etc etc Clearly if all of these players are having issues then the onus is likely on the system they are playing. Our defensive system is way too passive, the forwards and the defenders played out of sync with each other all season which caused inefficient transitions and deadly turnovers. The lack of practice time probably the main reason why they never did right the ship but I'd hope that the coaching staff takes some reflection in assessing their systems play. -
Expansion protected list: Forwards: Boeser / Horvat / Miller / Pettersson / Motte / Pearson / ??? Defensemen: Schmidt / Juolevi / ??? Goalie: Demko So this leaves us with exposed players of: Myers Roussel Virtanen MacEwen Lind Gadjovich Holtby That's pretty much it really.. I'm not listing Beagle or Ferland because of medical reasons and I doubt they claim Virtanen given his legal issues at the moment but I still put him up there... Given this list would there really be any choice for Seattle other than Myers here? I guess I could see them pick a prospect like Lind or Gadjovich but they are unknown quantities that really didn't take advantage of the chance they had this year.

This is what I'm saying. A guy goes to a new team is hard enough at times... Add on a very unique experience in the pandemic and you are writing him off for this single season... He's 29 not 32, he's been a consistent 30pt, + player in his career not a 15pt, - player. But hey let's just chuck him out on the curb... Our cap situation is not as dire as you or others make it out to be.. It's not perfect sure and there is some finagling to do but a virtanen buyout and a holtby buyout frees up around 6m on it's own. If you want to go cheap on a 3C and a bottom 6 defeneder then this Schmidt business is unrelated -
From the reports of Eliot and other media members it sounds like the players themselves would want a short term deal to out weight the stagnation of the cap. Of course from other reports it's said that the cap is going to be the same for the next 5 years or something ridiculous... I doubt it personally I think when fans come back teams will make money and the NHLPA will pressure for the cap to increase Guess what I'm saying is I don't think our cap situation is the main reason why Petey and Hughes are likely getting short term deals

But by your logic if we have Rathbone and Hughes we wouldn't need more offensive defensemen at that point ? People are overplaying this down year from Schmidt... he's a 30pt defender, a + player, and a 5 on 5 beast the previous 3 years and was pretty good in his 2 years in Washington as well... He didn't have a good year adjusting to a new team, new system, shortened schedule and a covid crisis... I feel like these aspects in consideration leads to an assumption that his play will be a considerable contribution to this team for the next 4 years in his contract. I also do not want Bogo or Galchenyuk... especially doesn't make sense to go with a cheap option after clearing out 6m in cap space... a mediocre 3C like Galchenyuk does nothing for our depth and Bogo is just an alright defender but more-so seems redundant when you likely have Hamonic resigning here. -

yeah i guess that would be a draft deal regardless hinging if your player is there or not. I guess i find it kind of hypocritical that you want to move out an "offensive" player in Schmidt to draft an offensive prospect in Clarke, granted prospects will project 2-3 years down the road but if our 2 main offensive dmen are super young in Hughes and Rathbone I'm not sure of the dire need to draft an offensive dmen so early especially to go up X amount of spots and giving up assets along the way to do so. I also seem to think that Clarke being pretty well the only RHD dman in the top end of the draft he gets a lot of notice and praise. I do think it's valid to his toolset but he likely gets more time of day than most. I guess what I'm saying is I don't think his projectability is any higher or more interesting than the other players in the 3-10 range. I think Schmidt has a lot more to give, he played with Theodore and was utilized in a shutdown-ish type role at some point. He's got a ton more two-way ability than what we've seen and it'd be a mistake to move from him. I'll keep Schmidt, keep the 9th and try to expose Myers in the expansion draft to see if Seattle will take him and his 6m off our books for us... we can also try to snag an expansion viable player from Tampa or Carolina at a below market price due to expansion draft exposure.. -

Hard pass. Why do you want to move to 5 vs just picking at 9? Who are you targeting at that pick? This draft it seems the 4-10 range are clumped together or at least I've heard as much. Trading a random future pick like that could also bite us Reading Schmidt away while his value is low is not ideal and I think he'll have a bounce back season.. -
So - Who Should The Canucks Take At The Number 9 Spot?
goblix replied to Patel Bure's topic in Canucks Talk
Meh BPA.. though to say who with the variability of consensus. Probably McTavish but if I'm game for anything Benning and co. chooses because they've earned the benefit of the doubt. I do hope we can snag Brent Johnson Inn the second or mayyyybe third pick Comitted to UND so I bet Judd bracket is going to pick him up lol -
[Discussion] Discusion - Emil Pettersson
goblix replied to kenhodgejr's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I'd give him a shot if he wants to take minimum 1 year deal and is able to play winger position where he can be utilized as an offensive top 9 forward. Perhaps more of a reason to get a player like Reinhart whom can play Center or RW so can see how things turn out between the two down that middle. Having Podz on the wing to fetch pucks could be interesting. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Vasili Podkolzin
goblix replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Maybe a few details here and there, little things like where he wants him to be to accept passes for transition and stuff like that. He does seem like a player that gives 110% effort out there but sometimes players that buzz around like that seem good but in reality they are creating needless chaos which is fine in the offensive zone but in the other 2 zones could potentially be deadly. -

Well... The difference is when boeser came up he was playing behind the sedins. Pettersson came up with the intention that Horvat was going to be the main offensive driver course he blew up everybody's expectations QH well our defense was starved for a talent like him but still came in with a veteran core group around him.. didn't edler and myers take the PP at the start anyways? Anyways this is all I'm saying. If we got the talent in the top 6 seems better to control his start. Hey if he jumps in training camp and a few games on fire and also maybe during games jumble the lines around to see what happens -

goblix replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Penciling Podz in to play with Petey and Boeser is a ton of pressure and quite the leap of faith... I know we've been treated to some excellent young kids performing but it'd be far more beneficial for us to have Podz protected put into a role where he can focus on building his NHL game rather than the need to dump him in the deep end and score. Miller - Petey - Boeser -- Lotto line Pearson - Horvat - Hogslander -- Shutdown line Motte - [Reinhart] - Podkolzin -- Protected Scoring line Highmore - Sutter - ??? -- Energy / Checking line My dream would be to get Reinhart out of Buffalo... I'd probably do a conditional 2022 // 2023 first pick and a prospect like Woo for him mainly because I think we could sign him for 6/6 or something reasonable. He can play Center or Wing, is young enough to hit some good years with this core group. An alternative would be to sign UFA Alex Wennberg which likely would be a cheaper option. -
I'm sold on Reinhart, although I think Buffalo is going to want a lot more than that... Not sold on Nuge... more than half of his points has come from the PP... and that of course is likely because of McDavid... I know he didn't have great wingers with him 5 on 5 but we need players that can push play and contribute 5 on 5... Reinhart on the other hand has 10 PPG out of his 25 goals which is pretty similar to Boeser... I also like his versatility to be able to play Center or RW so could be an option to move anywhere in the top 9 to shake things up

Most GMs I'd probably say no maybe not... GMJB is a scout to his core though so he may have the gumption to draft based on best for the future rather than hoping on immediacy Anywho either position on that kind of argument is just conjecture at this point... Question back at ya (and/or anyone): At 9th overall if a GM were to pick a player with immediacy in mind whom do you think they would pick (the now pick)? Now immediacy be damned which prospect would you pick up at 9th OA (your dream pick)? **using the general rankings of prospects in that range, let's say like 7-15 are in play

From the profiles I've read most are saying that he's reliable defensively... Anyways most of us only watch highlights here and there so I'm not overly gonna dispute that one way or the other. As long as he has a good character then his overall skillset fits pretty nicely on this team. Quick dynamic possession player, more of a playmaker but has a decent shot and a wicked backhander. Might be a winger but seemingly can be a center so the flexibility is there. sources: https://thehockeywriters.com/kent-johnson-2021-nhl-draft-prospect-profile/ https://lastwordonsports.com/hockey/2021/04/26/kent-johnson-scouting-report/ I know most people want a defensemen but honestly these guys are typically 2-3 years out from being ready anyways. Johnson here will likely take 3 years himself as he needs to put on some weight, not to mention most of these defensemen are LHD and we got 2 pretty good young ones in Hughes and Rathbone.

This is April 19th draft update from McKenzie and Button but thought it was worth the bump up since the season is over and it provides a good profile for the key prospects: At the 9 spot Kent Johnson looks pretty appealing to me... BC bred in Port Moody but more-so he just seems like a solid kid, solid size (needs to put on weight), with solid skill.
