  1. Not sure if anyone corrected you yet... but Bowey is on contract and meets the eligibility requirements. Realistically the only player worth protecting is Schmidt... I think Myers is far more useful than what CDC makes him out to be but his contract is a tad to long and that 6m is a bit too much. Here's hoping GMJB can target some useful young defenders that are on the exposed list and find a way to snag them up. I'd definitely use some draft capital this year for that. However I kinda want Kent Johnson in the draft if he's available at the 9-11 range.
  2. I think we'd have a good shot to sign him teams know we have good for talent and he'd be in that age range that fits the bill for this team. Johnson probably be fine I'd probably do it if they give me an asset for the cash they want to move out. Anyways Jake is likely untradeable until his investigation is over which probably will take awhile... If we can trade like a meh prospect for their 2nd and Johnson then that could work out for both teams. Can then use that pick to target a good expansion draft exposed player
  3. On this team Schmidt is a right d which is a little thin on youth on that side... Juolevi does seem to have the hockey smarts and ability to play but he needs to fix his issues with agility.. guy can't turn and it hurts his defence. Think this is probably due to the injuries so I hope it's a matter of him getting comfortable with how his body works... Anyways I'm down to trade Schmidt if he wants it and we get good return.. otherwise keep him so he can get accustomed to the new team before we ship him off.
  4. At first I was like hmmm yeah this could work.. then I saw Johnson is 30 and has fairly meh point totals If rather try to target Alex Wennberg UFA from Florida... If he hits the market that is.. 26 years old with a good mix of speed and skill.
  5. Vegas got stacked because teams offered up good assets to offload contracts or to pick a player they'd rather lose as opposed to another player... In reality Vegas isn't going to do us a favor for a 3rd round pick.. Looking at the roster in a general sense we should be able to protect our main assets and if Seattle is willing to take a stab in the dark at a random prospect that hasn't had any games in the NHL then that's just the price we pay in an expansion year. Going to lose someone no matter what here may as well let them scrape at the bottom of the barrel
  6. 4 year contract on Hughes or Petterson is a straight up non starter... That puts them into UFA after the contract with very little reasoning... A bridge deal would have to align to a 3 year deal at most. Either way just pay those two kids they are studs and we all know it. The trickier contacts are the ones that come after
  7. I'm impartial honestly. I wouldn't mind trading Pearson and signing one of these two. Would be an upgrade imo. Granlund seems like he would be a good playmaking winger next to Horvat. Leivo or Virtanen on the left and bam maybe we save a few $ with a 1 year show me deal while upgrading a bit.
  8. OEL and Ekblad are both pretty top-tier dmen whom are young or at least capable top 4 or better defensemen for the next 4-5 years at the least.. Juolevi I think he's given a hard ride and honestly speaking between him and Rathbone there's an argument that Juolevi is better suited to slide into the lineup sooner and contribute. Rathbone has the higher upside but is all boom or bust. Yeah I am apprehensive of trading 2 firsts as well but teams use firsts so you can get young top tier defensemen sooo I am less apprehensive in doing it for Ekblad. Maybe we can swing the deal for OEL for a 2nd instead but I'm doubtful on that. As for the scoring... I mean we still have the same 5 forwards that have shown consistency in their contribution but more so you are adding 2 dmen who have shown the ability to score from the blue line and that drives play offensively and adds scoring throughout the lineup. It's less than ideal but if you have a d-core like that signed for 5+ years and hoglander and podkolzin coming up the next couple years then you have the time to replenish the system. At least that's my reasoning..
  9. By your reasoning if the 3-4 years from now is your goal then Ekblad and OEL in 3-4 years will still be on this team and will be contributors to the lineup. Having this mentality of status quo is a trap that keeps you in the mid tier of the league and never pushes you to a position of being truly elite. Besides if you think about it, Pettersson and Hughes are going to get paid so if you want to hit the Tampa Bay levels of insanity then you need to have the ELC contracts being high-end contributors to the lineup alongside the elite talent we have now... Thus the hope would be Podkolzin / Hoglander / Rathbone would be high-end contributors in the coming years and to a lesser extent hopefully Lind / Woo / Lockwood and etc would be depth contributors. I feel ya there. Looking at the outlook we would have 12 contracts and 26.6m of cap space free. If we think that Pettersson and Hughes are going to cost 10 and 9 respectively then that would leave just 7m for 8 more contracts. even at the min ELC that wouldn't fit in the cap structure. That said that's next years problem and we're going to lose someone to the expansion draft so maybe we can make a deal to have Seattle take Myers and the 6m tag along with it... or maybe they just take him anyways lol. Can't forget about Ferland too, if he can't play next year then we'd have to think he's gotta retire or at least be on LTIR so that 3.5m could go a long way to filling out depth for us...
  10. I agree on the notion that we are robbing the forward group's depth to show the defensive core but that said a great defensive core can lead to immensely more forward viability after all the puck needs to move from the defense in the first place. Hoglander and Podkolzin potentially coming up the ranks it may just be a problem for this year only. I personally put a high value on a defense that can hang with the best of them around the league. A group like would easily be the best group the Canucks have ever had in the back end and with Markstrom + Demko in net we have insane insurance to be contenders. The fact that the top 3 guys would be in control for the next 5+ years gives us the time to recoup any kind of deficit in terms of prospects, picks and depth players.
  11. Pie in the sky type of dream scenario here. Trade 1 - Arizona and Vancouver VAN Receives: Ekman-Larsson, Oliver ($1,250,000 retained) ARI: Receives: Juolevi - Eriksson - Virtanen - 2021 1rst round pick Trade 2 - Florida and Vancouver VAN Receives: Aaron Ekblad FLA Receives: Boeser - Stecher - Gaudette - 2022 1rst round pick Trade 3 - Detroit and Vancouver VAN Receives: Future Considerations (nothing) DET Receives: Baertschi - 2021 3rd round pick Trade 4 - Ottawa and Vancouver VAN Receives: Future Considerations (nothing) OTT Receives: Roussel The Arizona trade is pretty standard stuff on what we think the offer should and will look like. Maybe we can get away with something cheaper... maybe not... The Florida trade may be a bit sketchy for a former 1rst overall big all around dman. Yet Dadonov and Hoffman leaving leaves a big whole on the RW side (even with Hornqvist) Boeser really seems like the starting point here which is unfortunate but there's no way around it. Stecher provides a young RHD with control that can eat away 15-20 minutes a night. Gaudette has upside to fill a center need. 2022 first round pick unconditional. Detroit will be looking to stock up picks so if Marc Staal was worth a 2nd rounder then Baertschi surely is worth a 3rd at the most. Ottawa has lost some veteran leadership and Roussel has less money owed than cap hit, we may need to add a pick here. The layout of the team is below here. Gives us a top 3 defense corps that we'd never seen before which would hopefully carry the forward groups to bigger and better things even though its downgraded with the loss of Boeser and to a lesser extent Virtanen / Gaudette. CapFriendly.com Armchair-GM User-Generated Roster FORWARDS (13) Right wing: Tyler Toffoli ($5,250,000) - Josh Leivo ($1,750,000) - Wayne Simmonds ($1,500,000) - Zack MacEwen ($925,000) Centre: Elias Pettersson ($925,000) - Bo Horvat ($5,500,000) - Brandon Sutter ($4,375,000) - Jay Beagle ($3,000,000) Left wing: J.T. Miller ($5,250,000) - Tanner Pearson ($3,750,000) - Nils Höglander ($891,667) - Tyler Motte ($1,500,000) - Micheal Ferland ($3,500,000) DEFENSE (7) Right: Aaron Ekblad ($7,500,000) - Tyler Myers ($6,000,000) - Brogan Rafferty ($700,000) Left: Quinn Hughes ($916,667) - Oliver Ekman-Larsson ($7,000,000) - Alexander Edler ($6,000,000) - Jordie Benn ($2,000,000) GOALTENDER (2) Jacob Markström ($5,500,000) - Thatcher Demko ($1,050,000) BUYOUTS (1) Ryan Spooner ($1,033,333) DETAILS Roster Size: 22 Salary Cap: $81,500,000 Bonus Overages: $1,700,000 Cap Hit: $80,551,879 Cap Space: $948,121 The above is including Ferland on our team which if he goes to LTIR would give us some flexibility throughout the season with Sutter, Pearson, Edler and Benn coming off the books next year I believe this gives us flexibility to sign Hughes and Pettersson to long term deals that fits under the cap structure. Podkolzin and maybe Rathbone or Edler resigning at a low cap next year perhaps that gives us the ELC flexibility to fit all of this in. I know losing a ton of these firsts is not the best 3 but considering that this shores up the defense crew for the next 5 years (at the least) this gives us the time to recoup the picks. Well let me know if you think the Florida trade is feasible or not. When dealing with top-end and highly touted players like Ekblad it's really hard to determine if anything is fair or feasible... Or just let me know if there is anything that we might be able to shift around to make the cap more manageable or the bottom 6 crew better
  12. Well one has to remember that cap hit is different than actual salary... A team not wanting to spend over 70m would only care about the actual dollars. In the case of Erickson after a 3m signing bonus he only requires 1m this year and then a total of 4m next year and considering they would be clearing OEL whose owed a bagillion dollars total having a return of 5m back is likely appealing to them
  13. Let say Arizona takes 1.25m off the OEL contract putting him at a 7m cap hit would one do a package that included Rathbone and a cap dump (+ more) to get the trade done? I like Rathbone, from what people are saying they say he's good and played well in Harvard the past 3 years but considering we have LHD of Hughes and a LHD OEL that would be under control for the next 7 years I could live with losing such a prospect for a sure thing now that has a great complimentary skillset to our stud rover in Hughes. At a certain point these prospects that develop into great prospects becomes valuable for reasons like this. We can't forever be in rut of the future.
  14. This whole thing is ridiculous. If you look at the draft videos you see many times Benning asking bracket if he wants to trade picks. Benning saying to Judd “Hey we got your guy” when selecting Hughes. Picking Pettersson over his supposed preferential pick of Glass. These are examples of collaboration and a GM respecting and being a good manager of listening to the people he appointed to the position they are hired to. It seems like Judd wanted to shake up the scouting department to the way he wants but Benning being an experienced scout throughout many levels of that department he has his own ideology and likely did not want it to look the way Judd envisioned.. To each their own. We shall see how things turn out but I am a general fan of Ryan Beich and lets be honest Judd isn’t the lone cowboy sniping out great draft prospects. Judd is a great scout, one of many, wish him the best in his next gig.
  15. I trust in Holland more than previous regimes. Holland has a history with AA so I'd imagine he likes him long term and is confident that he can resign him. Valid Top 6 forward that is one of the few players that can skate stride for stride with McDavid. Their defence is still meh and their goal tending is in a worse situation. Can't fix everything at once though so if AA looks to be a legit winger with McDavid and they can sign him long term then works for both sides
  16. Stecher for Barrie straight up toronto gets rfa more of a defender. canucks gets UFA offensive Defense man
  17. Was musing on the effects of fatigue specifically after the Boston game. A tired team on 3 games in 4 days it’s hard to differentiate from effort, passion or just straight up fatigue taking effect. Benn sitting out as a 7th, Bailey and other Utica players that have earned a look up here. We should be utilizing that kind of benefit with regards to tough stretches in the schedule and specifically but not exclusive to veterans. Edler is a warrior and has played well in the new defensive look. He’s settled into a proper 2/3/4 role and off the PP. that said he looked tired and super slow. Benn likely would’ve been a better option in either the Boston game or Carolina. Maybe the travel itself is the problem but a mental day off of the NHL game is worth the look into the benefits from fatigue. We can also move this towards the forward group. Beagle looks beaten up and could likely skip a game along the way. Erickson is the same as Edler in that he could use a rest day every now then. i understand that there is a need to ice the best possible players to give the best chance to win but a couple of fatigued players causes holes and can break a system and thus should be thought of in terms of decision making. As an added benefit you actually get to see what you got in Utica which could impact TDL decisions. I know this isn’t a new idea, basketball rests players all the time but the NHL seems to be lagging behind in that mentality. What are your thoughts on rest and swapping out for “fresh” depth or what players in Utica are you dying to take a peek at in the NHL
  18. Wait who in that list is worth a first on their own? Anyways 5 for 1 deals never happen so really not much of a discussion here.
  19. A lot of these are just paper trails for players to have a backup or a deadline from the team. Contracts can still be signed and arbitration avoided. The most interesting is Binnington and how much the arbitrator would value a Stanley cup or even if that is even a viable argument towards the value.
  20. I don't think Canucks would want to go into next year potentially without their 2 first picks in 2020 draft. Also we are pretty well capped with Boeser contract coming up.
  21. Ah so this was the final piece to Sakic's puzzle. It all makes sense now
  22. Hmm forgot they still have Horton in IR retention this year which would free up 5.3m not entirely sure how the cap magic works with these perma injured players but I'm assuming they will be able to skirt around and get that 5.3m available. so they still need to do some work on the cap but they aren't in as much trouble as i initially thought.
  23. Agreed... they traded out Soderberg and now Kerfoot and Barrie which were #4/5/6 on their top scorers of their season... on a team struggling for secondary scoring.... out: Barrie / Kerfoot / Soderberg in: Donskoi / Kadri / Burakovsky also not sure how Leafs are going to sign Kerfoot, Ceci and Marner with 11 mil in cap space
  24. can just bring the kids up / down based on injury needs. Biega as a stop gap for immediacy whilst they travel. but I can see the allure in creating depth in the NHL to provide stability in the AHL they got spread too thin with all the call ups last year
