  1. Nice to hear an article focused on Podz, because he's obviously my favorite player.  But gotta say, it shouldn't take having a child to motivate you to get to another level.  Regardless, if that helps Podz great... It seemed to help Bo during the bubble playoffs as well but...

The young man just needs to get out of his own way and kick some ass!  He is a bull, through and through, it's all about confidence for him.

I don't believe we've even seen what he could be in the slightest yet.  I expect a game changer.  A guy that can almost single handedly put the team in his back and will a win by using that blistering snap shot or physically imposing his will and just bowling his way to the net and score.  Hopefully this is the year... And if so, his effectiveness will correlate with the team making some noise, should they make the playoffs.

Overblown or not bad optics with the stick smash on Delia, the sulking etc. he's fine as a vocal leader and Alternate but a bit too temperamental to be a full captain.

Everything is overblown in this market.  JT would be a perfect captain in a market that is looking for more media attention.  This market and especially media are so 'karen' like to begin with... Hughes is the best choice of the three.

I have to say Alvin has really grown into his role. Probably his strongest presser.

I think this is really a watershed moment for the team. I can't exactly explain why, but this team is becoming something.

I totally agree with your assessment of Alvin.  He's gotten very articulate... Less hesitant more confidence in his ability to convey thoughts on process and direction.

Until this presser... I was feeling pretty skeptical about the management and the team as a whole.  I'm not saying I'm ready to crown this team as 2024 Stanley Cup champs but maybe... As you alluded to,  maybe this organization is you know... Showing signs of being a well run organized team.

    Great move

don’t let this fester with the Vancouver media, just name your guy and get to work.

petey and Miller will be A’s I assume

secondly, I don’t think petey has the right personality to deal with the demands of being a captain and Miller is just TOO honest sometimes to be in that role every day thus hughes is the right call

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Petey reminds me of a slightly more reserved Naslund... If that's possible lol!  It was to much on Nassy.  It appeared like he wasn't having as much fun playing when he became Captain... Especially when the team started losing and not reaching expectations.

Miller is to overtly emotional to be a captain... Similar personality to Kesler... That's why I thought Henrik was the best choice last time the management chose a captain.

Hughes was the best choice for this emotionally scared market...  But time will tell if we keep losing... It might wear on him as well.

Ultimately, I'm just glad it wasn't the other two... It would have been a gong show with Miller at the mike every game and it would have stressed poor Petey out to the point he'd want out sooner than later.  This way, both those guys can just focus on their season and speak up when they feel the need to do so.

    Best choice!!!  Captain Huggy!

Thats why Benning drafted him after his 5G WJC performance. I don't think he will make it on skill alone though I'd like to see him get his nose dirtier this year.

I think this year we'll see him round his game out.  He has tons of potential.  Kinda what Virtanen was supposed to be but without the blazing speed.  He's not slow but he ain't fast either.  Ultimately, he has all the physical tools to be a good middle six NHL player, just not sure if he has the level of hockey sense needed to stay in the show.... He's really young so, might just be a maturity thing.  This year should tell us what we really have in Klim.

Even if we lose on the deal, I would take a 7th and give up a 3rd to move that contract.

    Hold your horses!!!

Maybe a 4th... Maybe.  Otherwise it would be a bad move.  See how camp goes see who goes on ltir.  Go from there.

Good 4th liner.  Problem with him becomes when he gets moved up.

Don't think that it was much of problem last season.  His average ice time before January was 10 min.  Shot up after January to 14-15 minutes per game.  Tocchet played him and Joshua earned his trust.  Work in progress?... Well yah!  Last season was his first full NHL season.  He played 72 games.  He can skate and is getting better at using and taking the body.  He's progressing, thus year should be a big jump for him.  He'll earn 3rd line time but will probably mostly stay on the 4th.

A factoid about Willander I found amusing. He chose for his walkup song "Life is a Highway", which contains the lyrics "From Mozambique to those Memphis nights, the Khyber Pass to Vancouver's lights", which is very fitting and Vancouver is the only NHL city mentioned in the song.

    I think he knew.

I always though it was "Vancouver's riots"... That would really make him a canuck!!!!:bigblush:

After seeing Tom Willander and his frame and his entire approach, I was impressed.

    This is a serious dude.

Then to hear him speak about why he choose to go to Boston U, to gain as much development as possible, with a family background in Sports Science, a super serious dude.

His has all the tools and his pathway and demeanour suggest this guy is not one who accepts second place very easily and that he is laser focused on a extremely thought put path.

I don’t think he is going to be playing ‘Fortnite’ or wanting buck bunnies around.

The best part about Tom, he is apparently Uber competitive.

His coach on J20 said to scouts that Tom had to be coached to lighten up on his own teammates in defensive drills, because he was so fierce and good at defending that his J20 Coach at Rogel didn’t want Tom breaking the spirit of his offensive players.

    Yup.

    Yup.

    Yup.

    Yup.

    Yup.

    Yup.

    Etc…

Never has the Canucks ever drafted a guy like this in the first round.

Never has the Canucks ever had such a smart and fierce defensive prospect in our entire history.

    Matty Ohlund pre eye injury?

Elder with way more Moxie and Mojo and less goofy breakdowns and a RHD?

The Canucks were drafting a player for Quinn Hughes.

    Full Stop.

    This was their guy.

No doubt and they got their guy.

Specifically for Quinn Hughes and this prospect is taking the College Path instead of staying in Sweden.

Is this the next brainiac defender that has the size and physicality that Tanev never did, but equal skating and game speed intelligence that may rival Petey but without the puck?

Look at pictures of Nick Lidstrom and look at his focus and stare.

Miro Heiskanen has that same laser focus and I think Tom Willander has signs of it in his eyes too.

One of the subtle but un thought of aspects of a Nick Lidstrom’s effect on the Red Wings dynasty wasn’t in games.

    It was in practice.

You had to beat Nick Lidstrom and Chris Chelios in drills to make the cut.

Then game day your playing other defenders not named Nick Lidstrom and or Chris Chelios…

If Tom can bring his compete to a Rick Tockett and Adam Foote practice, how much better could Tom make our own players?

Couldn’t hurt to make defensive practices way harder for our amazing forwards as a push?

100%  Phatty!!!!  You hit all of points I think relevant as to why he was drafted by this management at #11.  Many people here think we picked him for position over bpa... How about... We picked the bpa, whom happens to also be our #1 position of need.

Not focusing on his physical traits.  Leta look at his mental make-up.  This starts with looking at what kind of personalities we already have in our core.

Petey: soft spoken stoic, gracious with a quiet, intense ultra competitive nature.

Hughes: soft spoken but wise beyond his years.  Understands and seems to enjoy being a leader.  When speaking, teammates listen.  With a quiet intense ultra competitive nature.

JT: outspoken, wearing his heart on his sleeve, emotional, firery competitive and also compassionate personality.  Speaks his truth willingly and with conviction... Sometimes, even when timing is wrong (work in progress).

Demko: fun loving, grounded, thoughtful, stoic, unwavering rock solid, dependable, fiercely loyal,  quiet intense competitive nature.

These are our core guys as of today... Hronek might be added to this group in time but no read as of now.  Personally, I predict Podz could become part of this core, IF and that a big if... He builds more self confidence.  In my view, that's whats been holding him back... Some of that us due to immaturity as well.

That brings me to Willander... Obviously we just drafted him, and don't know him that well yet.  BUT gotta say... Just from the few interview I've see with him and other scouts and coaches that have gone on the record to talk about his person and competitive nature.... I LOVE, LOVE what I hear!  Willander might just turn out to be that addition to our core to COMPLETE it.  Make it well rounded.  His personality is what I was hoping Podz could have and may still have elements that are sorely missed in this current core.   I see Willander being the bridge between a personality like JT (one end of the spectrum) and Petey (the other end of the spectrum).  His confidence in self (even a bit cocky in a good way), super articulate, highly intelligent, somewhat stoic by nature.... But OVERLY competitive nature similar to JT.  This guy single handedly can really get this team to a place only the real elite teams are (Tampa, Vegas, etc).

You can have all the talent in the world but if you don't have the right mix of personalities in the locker room... Chances are really slim that your name will be engraved on the most storied championship trophy in sports.

    Let's goooo!!!!

    This. This. This.

This trade showed the core that management believes in them. Also, we were never out-tanking those bottom 5, they are pathetic. We were 1 lotto ball away from winning it all. Had we tanked, and lost Bédard to 11th place, what would the fanbase have said then?

if you’re not tanking for bottom 3, there’s no point. We got our guy, who fits a positional need at 11, and added a top pairing RHD to boot.

This is a very refreshing management group, they know what they’re doing.

I wouldn't go that far yet... They've been better than the previous regime but that ain't sayin much.  Tomorrow will go a long way towards building a positive outlook on this management team an franchise alike.  Hopefully tomorrow ends up being the 'tsn turning point' this franchise has been lacking for over a decade now.

    *schtick

    Shtick
A shtick is a comic theme or gimmick. The word entered the English language from the Yiddish shtik, related to German Stück and Polish sztuka, all meaning "piece", "thing" or "theatre play"; Theaterstück is the German word for play. The English word piece is sometimes used in a similar context.

Thank bro... Cool... Nice to find out the origins of a word within our English language from time to time.  This being one.... I actually knew it was spelt different.... Was just to lazy to do anything about it.

    Cheers
