playing more PP than he ever did in detroit?? you know his PP mins was skewed when they put him on PP1 with QH right to test.. they are going right back to their 4 forward 1 defence so where's he going to get his pp mins from? we are playing and deploying him like a defensive defenceman against other teams top player. i expect him to be a -15 to -20 player by the end of the season next year.
hronek took over detroits PP1 this season. regardless of what his pp time is.. he was playing on the top pp unit of detroit.. is he going to get that opportunity to play with the EP/Miller/Kuzmenko here? no he's going to get the garlands dries beau.. great opportunity there.
3 games 4 nights... First 4 games as a canuck getting used to his teammates and 6 weeks off with injury. A little to soon to have a concrete assessment yet maybe?

Not enough money... Bruce is top notch... Better as a NHL analyst, not just canuck homer radio guy. He's a treat to watch and listen to.

Wait until Hronek's ready.... We could win all 13 games the way the team is playing... And even when overmatched, Demko shuts the door. Seriously... I know its a snowballs hope in hell but this team doesn't act like they are playing out the string. Look at the usage of Hughes and Demko. If we were trying to mail it in... If the players where mailing it in, we'd have lost many more games then we have.
This team wants to win badly... Petey, Kuzy, have been producing like mad, Demko, JT, are on fire right now. Joshua, and Aman are playing really consistently and getting better every game. All the Abby guys have been playing well above expected. Delia is looking rested and solid. Just wow!
I predicted (tongue and cheek) when Demko got back... We may win out and.... Miss the playoffs by 1 point.
Even if somehow, someway they make it?.... Is that a good thing, being the draft that it is???
f**k it!!!!! Let's goooooooo!!!!!

Obviously I want the team to land the best pick possible. I'm sure that goes for everyone here. That said, you can't expect professional athletes to purposely lose and expect them to want to stick around.
I think my main issue is that I just don't understand what people are advocating we do when they complain about winning games like Drance does. There may be some minor things like allotting ice time differently, but it's not like that won't be noticed by your star players. If the team is down 3-2 with 5 minutes left, we get a powerplay, and Tocchet sends the 4th line and bottom pairing out on the powerplay, I'm sure that wouldn't sit well with Petey or Hughes. We could sit Demko, which would probably have a more significant effect on the tank than anything, but are you really willing to piss off your star goalie (as well as the rest of the team), especially after he was out most of the season and is trying to reestablish himself? That hardly seems fair to him.
+1
Especially when management is attempting to create a strong culture in the locker room. Coaches purposely choosing to put out less competitive line-up. That would be a mistake for sure.
No doubt, this is an awkward time... With hindsight, management should have let Boudreau go end if last season. But really.... The mistake was made by Aquallini, by hiring Boudreau BEFORE Jim Rutherford. Anyway, here we are.... Gotta say that I am enjoying the product on the ice both in Van and in Abby.

I think waiting one more year to buy out OEL would be good. If we honestly think we will not be contenders next April either. If you compare the numbers between a buyout this summer, and a buy out next summer.
https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout-calculator/oliver-ekman-larsson
We can still save 7 million of cap if we wait a year than if we bought him out this summer.
I just can't see us hanging on to him longer than that if he continues to decline. But if we can bring in Hronek, and one more better D, we can regulate OEL to 5/6 position. With less minutes, I think he'll be fine for another season. Depends if we buy out Myers or not this summer.
Appreciate the cap friendly link. If it looks like OEL's season decline was mostly due to injury BEFORE his reported injury. The management needs to assess whether they feel he could be effective as a #3 LD then keep him for next season and consider your suggestion for buyout summer 2024. Otherwise, after this season looks to be the smart move for sure. Saving big next season and then having the cap go up significantly after 23-24 season to counter the stiffer cap buyout cost for 25-26 and 26-27 seasons. Not ideal but workable. JB's parting gift is a doozie.... Similar to Gillis's parting gift with Luongo's cap recapture penalty.

Didn't know there was a quota on blaming lol! How about blame JB for both!

Good assessment. I agree with pretty much everything. But I don't think I would call the Delia move a "miss". He was expected to share the AHL duties, not take over as the #1 guy on the big team. He cost pretty much nothing. Critics might say that the Canucks should have had a better contingency plan in place in case of injury to Demko, but I don't think that is fair. Given the team's lack of cap space it was hard to do much to cover the contingency that Demko would struggle and get injured, and that Martin would also struggle.
To me, the biggest question mark is re-signing Miller. I did not like that move when it happened and I hated it in the early part of this season. But now it looks like it might be ok. The price tag was on low side of the "market" rate, but I was not sure the timing made sense. But I think that JR and Alvin have built a team that might be surprisingly good over the next couple of years, and that would make the Miller re-signing look much better.
If the Canucks were a stock, I would buy now.
James... It's posters like you that make it worth my while combing through these threads on CDC.
100% agree with your post.
If Demko's healthy and playing at his peak, with structure and systems that are bought into, even with very little change with the lineup, this team will compete for a playoff wild card next season.
Though a tanker mentality, I'm concerned if the team will even lose a few more games? (should be happy right?!)
Regardless, I like what I see... Beyond Petey, Hughes taking huge steps thus year in their evolution... the bottom 6 is shaping up to be the best one since 2010-11 team as well.

"I'll be honest, I didn't think it would happen this quickly. [Bains'] hockey sense is elite of the elite."
"He dominated the Western League and really made it look easy. Then, to be able to come into training camp, come to Abbotsford and basically throw that all out the window. You see a lot of guys come in and say, 'I got this all figured out. I got I know what I'm doing.'"
"But we challenged him in ways. We said 'you're going to find ways to produce but it's going to be through a method that you completely didn't have to do for four years in the Western League'. We said that we're kind of going strip you down and build your back up as a pro."
"From day one, he bought into that challenge and he turned himself into the first unit penalty killer. His puck management has improved, and his pace has improved. He's bought in and it shows you the maturity and we're extremely excited about him."
"It'll be a massive offseason for him. I know we can get his lower body stronger, and continue to work on his pace. But when you're that smart of a hockey player and you have the intangibles as he does, you're going to find a way."
- Ryan Johnson on Arshdeep Bains' success in the AHL as a rookie
I know RJ is a top notch PR guy when it comes to his players... But to say Bains is "elite of the elite" when it comes to hockey sense. I'm excited. This will be like found money... The difference of this management group compared to the last, when it comes to amateur and especially pro scouting... AND DEVELOPMENT. Is like comparing NASCAR to Formula One.

Can't really get a full read on his overall hockey sense or his drive, but the kid smooth as silk. Pretty incredible puck skills.
This could still be a sneaky good pick up for us.
Obviously we're all skeptical that this could be another Goldobin - but a 6'3 Russian with Krav's hands is a player worth taking a chance on.
Yah.... I hope he works out because as you said, Goldy also had high end skill. However, from first couple games, he looks to me like a even more skilled, higher IQ version of goldy. It will come down to his will and conditioning. Hopefully doesn't turn into a tease like goldy did.

Calling it now...
So the canucks with Demko playing lights out for the rest if the season... Kuzy, Petey, Hughes continue to have elite seasons and Hronek when healthy, will be a revelation and give us a truly elite first paring with Hughes. Won't lose another game thus season. They'll go like 19-0-3 rest of the way.
Us fans and the rest of the league is in shock at this never seen before turn around!!!! We'll be on here sayin "Even better than the Boudreau bump!!!!" "So much fun to watch!!!" "What an exciting team!!!!" "I love coach Tocc!!!" "Hronek was worth the draft picks!!!!" "Demko is bubble Demko again!!!"....... ......................."we might make the playoffs!!!!!"..................................................................
.........And end up missing the playoffs by 1 point.
Just preparing myself is all...

Demko is my favorite player on this team. When healthy, he's been the best player on this team... period. All last season and the bubble, hands down the best player. Single handedly got us to game 7 against Vegas. Vegas was so shaken by his 'out of this world' play they lost their confidence to score and bowed out next round. THAT is our goalie Demko. I believe we could win a cup with Demko... I believe he's that good, top 3 when healthy.
Saying all that.... I'm really worried abouy his health. The year of his draft, after his season ended in Boston college, he had double hip surgery. Not so much because of injury but he was fighting restrictions in movement in both his pelvic sockets. In an interview some months later, he was excited by the fact that his range of motion had increased and he was really happy with the results from the surgery. HOWEVER, after I read that interview, I was crossing my fingers that, that would be the last time we have to deal with his hip challenges.
Anyway, I've had it in the back of my mind that there will be only one thing that could stop Demko from being an elite goaltender for years to come and that would be injury. I'm not sure of exactly where his injury is this time but am nervous about his long-term health.
All in all, though he's my guy, I'd be open to trade Demko BUT it would have to be for top return or its not worth it, period. If all goes well and Silovs continues to show improvement and Demko gets back to full health and his game back. Then reevaluate then, take calls and sell high and get max return.

Except Tryamkin, fanbase loves that big idiot no matter what for some reason. I am excited to see what Kravtsovs got, but I think people really do tend to get out of hand. I seen people say he's good defensively and called him a powerforward. But that's the nature of other team's prospects, they're more overhyped. Then when they come here and don't meet those lofty misguided expectations the fanbase turns on them and they suck.
He's not a two way guy and he's not a powerforward and we don't even know if he'll be a legit bottom 6 guy, let alone come close to those 9th overall expectations. He has 10 points in his career. I want to see him in action, but I think we should tone down the expectations til we see him play. Buuuuut, we won't. People already have him slotted in the top 6 for us at some point.
I don't see many pencilling him into the top 6... Think you're missing the point. We gave up minimal assets to get one with much higher ceiling potential. Whether he works out and becomes a quality player for the nucks or not, it's just refreshing to see a trade without overpaying, for a change. Baby steps, low expectations after benning regime.

Except they got one of the best defensive fwds to come along in awhile.
This makes TO a much tougher team to play against.
My thoughts are that Dubas couldn't get a decent defenseman in a trade without losing his shirt, this was the next best option. Can't say I don't like it. Hell of a way to put all your chips in play. "All or nothin' 2"

Price is high but it's due or die for Dubas.
Even though RoR is a great character, cup winning third line quality f/o center.... And will make them a even stronger team, they should have focused on acquiring more veteran D.

Michkov may be scoring at a rate that is comparable to or better than Ovechkin but there's a SERIOUS thing people are missing and I truly don't give a randy shart how skilled you are because it matters.
Draft height/weight
Matvei Michkov. 5'10" 148 pounds
Alexander Ovechkin 6'3" 200 pounds
One of those bodies is NHL ready and proved it by literally running through guys in their rookie year. The other body .....
Yes he may be as skilled as anyone else in the world and yes he's listed as heavy as 172 pounds in some places, most others have him at or around 150 pounds. If we end up with him great, we hope that home run swing lands in the stands. But that is a very tiny frame to expect to come over to the NA market of heavy hitters and grunts and expect to see success from.
See; .
Okay... Maybe he turns out to be more like a Kucherov? But Gilbert... Come on now.
