[Signing] Canucks sign Karel Plasek
-AJ- replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
We'll see if he can make it in Abby next year. His numbers in Europe haven't seen much change over the past few years. So long as we're not close to the contract limit, this is fine. -
Depends on if he improves off this year. He spent most of the year playing at a 13th forward level. He has to put up more points to justify being so mediocre (at best) defensively). IMO unless he steps it up back to 2019-20 regular season levels, he's headed for the AHL or Europe.

I get the feelling we should be careful to judge Olli too much based off this year, particularly the ending after he was ravaged by COVID. That said, his dearth of offense is a big concerning and I hope he picks it up eventually. I'll try to hold my breath for next year in hopes of a noticeable improvement.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the kid learned about it and then to be a jokester and troll people, put it as their favourite book, not necessarily to imply they agreed with it or anything. Teenagers are like that
-
So glad it looks like his dad is doing well.
-
From what I understand the right side isn't totally alien to Hughes either. Probably worth a shot to see how he does.
-
Probably too early to say I'd guess. Demko's already shown some pretty high highs, so Dipietro already has a ways to go. I wouldn't likely say it's impossible that Dipietro could be as good though.
-
I think he does have starter potential, but he's not quite there yet.
-
I'm guessing we just deal with him as backup next year probably. Dipietro probably isn't ready for full-time backup duties yet. Should be ready in 2022-23 though.

[proposal] Jake Virtanen for Tyler Johnson
-AJ- replied to Patel Bure's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I don't think we have the cap room for this move really. Johnson's also not likely to find his game again, given that he's nearly 31 years old now. He's starting to enter the decline stage of his career. -
Pretty sure he was comfortably over 100 mph at the All-Star game.

[Report] Canucks sign Travis Green to contract extension
-AJ- replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Sounds like no changes then. TBH, as much as I've been supportive of all our management/staff, I'd prefer short contracts here. I'm getting a bit antsy. -
It's actually the perfect way to describe him, haha.
-
Yeah, I think anything $2M or under and a 1-year deal would be perfect. I could live with two years, but at his age and decline, 1 year is safer.
-
Biega was more physical and could put up a few points though too. I hate to slather it on Chatfield, but I think he's a 9-10 d-man on most teams and as others suggest, is only getting time because he's a RHD, which is dumb to me. I don't think playing D on your off side is so hard that you have to cripple your team by playing a much worse guy. I'm not sure if Green or Baumer makes that decision, but it seems a bit over the top to me.
-
I will give you this--there are plenty of examples of top-end teams with excellent 3rd line centres that are closer to 2nd-line guys or even better. Jordan Staal on the Penguins of 2009 comes to mind. The Penguins in the mid 90s also often had three really excellent centres. It does happen, but more often on top-end teams. Even the current Penguins have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to offensive centremen.
-
It's entirely possible, but I really don't think Horvat himself can carry teammates to make 3rd-line wingers into 2nd-line wingers. All we'd likely see is a big drop off in offense from Horvat and some frustration. What wingers would he have? Assuming Hoglander mvoes up to play with Petey and Boeser, that leaves Pearson and...Highmore for the 2nd line? What for the 3rd line? Boyd and Sutter? It's really lacking IMO unless those guys take a big jump. There's a chance Podkolzin is ready to jump in, but we can't be certain of that yet. I do think Miller likes centre far more though and plays better in that position as well. It's a bit of a conundrum, but I think we'd lose too much by demoting Horvat to playing with line mates that aren't 2nd-line calibre.
-
Horvat is too good to be on the 3rd line, IMO. He'd be wasted with mediocre line mates.

Wowee, that didn't go so well. - Pettersson was injured, but also played worse than expected. - Miller regressed as I expected, but by a bit more than I expected. - Boeser improved as I expected, but by more than expected, which was a pleasant surprise. - Horvat had a regression for the first time in his career - Hughes put up slightly fewer points than I expected and was a lot worse defensively without Tanev - Gaudette sucked and then was traded - Edler majorly regressed. I was very far off here. - Schmidt had a very tough time adjusting to the team, but got better as the year went on. Still not as good as I hoped. - Virtanen was a nightmare. - Pearson regressed even more than I predicted - Hoglander performed almost exactly as I predicted, though with a few more goals and fewer assists - Sutter was close to what I predicted, but not quite and injured--again - Juolevi wasn't a regular in the lineup and struggled a lot offensively - Myers outperformed my expectations. - Roussel's nightmare continues - Motte performed better than expected, but had injuries - Hamonic performed as about expected, but slow to start and a hot finish - MacEwen couldn't put up points this year - Eriksson barely played and he sucked when he did - Beagle was about as expected, but injured more - Benn was far better than expected, but traded - Canucks finished 24th in offense. Not exactly strong. They did struggle defensively at 26th in defense. - Fans definitely want Benning and Green fired. Not sure if they'll get another chance or not, but early news suggests at least Benning will. - Demko actually played more than Hotlby, about 60/40 in favour of Demko - Edmonton did not struggle. Nugent-Hopkins wasn't great, but McDavid was legendary with 105 points in 56 games. - Lafreniere struggled to start, but picked it up later on. Won't be winning the Calder. - Stutzle probably won't be a finalist, but had a solid year. North Division Standings Prediction: 1. Flames - 5th, BIG WRONG 2. Maple Leafs - 1st, Close 3. Canadiens - 4th 4. Oilers - 2nd 5. Canucks - 7th, yikes 6. Jets - 3rd, very wrong 7. Senators - 6th Extremely close division, maximum of 8 points separate 1st and 7th. Big wrong--27 points between Toronto and Vancouver.

Now Official - Canucks Lottery pick from 9th position
-AJ- replied to grandmaster's topic in Canucks Talk
The Canucks have drafted 9th overall three times in team history and drafted the following players: 1973: Bob Dailey 1983: Cam Neely 2013: Bo Horvat All good picks, so let's hope the trend continues, assuming we do pick 9th. -
With the season officially over now, this thread is re-opened to assess our predictions!

[Report] Jussi Jokinen announces retirement
-AJ- replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
I remember how surprisingly good he was for us. Kind of a neat surprise. -
Crazy to me that Horvat won the Cyclone. He's not a horrible choice, but I'd have Boeser above him and Demko winning it for sure. I think I forgot to vote this year. I think all the other picks are good ones.
