I was listening to the Skyrim OST recently. What a masterpiece.

Hmm...so is the NHL's info misleading? It specifically says "first- and second year NHL Players" and not "pro players". I guess they just weren't clear, which is annoying. Regardless, thanks for clearing that up.
-
I must have misunderstood the list. I thought there was a minimum number of games for a player to be exposable. I assumed the GR meant "games remaining in order to be exposed". Maybe it's not very clear. NHL.com says "All first- and second-year NHL players, and all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward protection limits." Doesn't Juolevi fall into this category as well as MacEwen? I would think this would also include Lind and Gadjovich who haven't even played a single NHL game yet.
-
I keep: Boeser, Miller, Petttersson, Horvat, Motte, Gaudette, Virtanen/MacEwen (if Mac plays enough games to require protecting)--I'm pretty sure Lind and Gadjovich don't have enough games to be eligible, but I might be misunderstanding the rules. Schmidt, Juolevi (assuming he plays enough to require protecting), no one? Myers is the only other eligible non UFA defenseman, but I don't want to protect him. I think we might have to re-sign Hamonic and/or Edler to at least have enough defensemen to protect and expose. Demko We are very immune to the expansion draft this time around. EDIT: The rules are stupidly complicated and my list is dumb. Regardless, we don't stand to lose much in this draft I think.

[Speculation] Teams Calling on Schmidt and Motte
-AJ- replied to CRAZY_4_NAZZY's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I appreciate your apology. I'll be honest, I'm not sure a 2nd is equal to him and you may be right. I guess I'm remembering that Demko was an early 2nd and Boeser was a late 1st. As good as Motte is, he's still a bottom-six forward. That said, I really really don't want to trade him and I think we'd need to be massively overpaid to justify it. Maybe that is a late 1st rounder, maybe even as crazy as a higher 1st round pick, I'm not sure. -

Because I write about hockey I think I'm an expert? I write because I enjoy writing and enjoy hockey. You don't have to respect my opinion, but I'll respect your choice not to respect my opinion. To each their own. One of the beauties of a public forum like this is that we can all share our opinions. However, there may be a better way to discuss our varying opinions than in such an aggressive manner. -

Does me writing about the midway point have anything to do with anything? I'm not sure I see the connection. -

I'll be blunt, I'm not sure Motte's even worth as little as any old 2nd rounder. Those are the kinds of guys who are glue for contender teams. Maybe I take a top 40 pick for him, but I'm not sure about lower than that. -

Demko's walking into 2019-20 Markstrom territory here. I'd say he's top 10 in Vezina this year so far and if you put the homer glasses on, you might be able to make a #5 or so case.

NHL proposed changes to draft lottery

I'd be okay with these changes. -
White, because it's actually crashing out of ice, which looks white. Honestly though, I'm fairly indifferent. Just keep them the same iMO.

I always enjoy making report cards to assess the players and I figured the midway point would be a good time to evaluate. I enjoy how looking closely at each player can make you realize some things you previously didn't about their play. I'll post my grades below, but the primary purpose of this thread is for others to post their own report cards. My own scores are based of a combination of expectations for the players and overall player ability. This allows worse players to get decent grades if they're better than expected. I also used a minimum of 9 games to be graded. Forwards 1. Gaudette – D Dramatic reduction in offense this year when improvement or maintaining last year was expected 2. A. Roussel – D Contract aside, Roussel needs to be producing more, creating more energy, or taking smarter penalties (or else not taking them at all) 3. B. Horvat – B- Horvat is struggling offensively a bit compared to prior years and his face-off percentage has also dropped. He still remains a key part of the team though. 4. B. Sutter – C Sutter had an offensive burst to start the season, but hasn’t produced as much as he should recently. His defense has always been good and he’s appropriately getting some good attention now, but he can be better. 5. B. Boeser – A Boeser has been better than expected and is looking the best he’s ever been to this point in his career. I consider him the team’s MVP so far. 6. E. Pettersson – B+ Pettersson remains a key player for the team, but he’s not setting the world on fire. Doing about as good as expected other than the poor start, which knocked him down to a B+. 7. J. Miller – B+ Offense is keeping up for Miller, but some egregious defensive mistakes have made him frustrated at times. 8. J. Virtanen – F I want Virtanen to succeed, but he’s frankly largely failed so far. 9. J. Beagle – C Par for the course for Beagle 10. N. Hoglander – A- Much better than expected, but has slowed down a bit lately. 11. T. Pearson – C- Pearson’s poor performance has slipped under the radar. His lost top six level play hurts the team. 12. Tyler Motte – B+ A fan favourite and has become a key bottom six forward for the team. 13. Z. MacEwen – C MacEwen is a fan favourite for his emotional and physical play, but he needs to put up more than 1 point in 15 games. Defensemen 14. A. Edler – C Still has good defensive moments sometimes, but foot speed is falling off and struggling offensively 15. J. Chatfield – C Not much was expected, but he hasn’t brought much. 16. J. Benn – B Benn isn’t flashy, but has stepped up his game to become a solid bottom pairing option for the Canucks this year. 17. N. Schmidt – C+ Schmidt has been improving as of late, which saves him from a C, but he needs to keep it up in order to see his grade rise more. O. Juolevi - B- I'm excited by Juolevi's start to the season, but I admit I was hoping for more than 1 point in 15 games. His defense has been sound enough and above expectations that I just barely give him a B- over a C+. 18. Q. Hughes – B+ I was very close to giving Hughes an A-, but his relatively poor defensive play makes it too much for me. His offense remains incredible and arguably even better than last year. 19. T. Hamonic – C+ Hamonic’s job is not to put up points, but he hasn’t been particularly amazing defensively either. Firmly mediocre. 20. T. Myers – B Myers is roller coaster defensively and occasionally makes great plays, but also makes boneheaded ones. His offense has improved a fair bit over last year though, which gives him a decent grade. Goalies 1. T. Demko – A The #1 contender against Boeser for team MVP right now, Demko has warmed up into the season very well and after a poor start, has become a very solid starter for the Canucks. 2. B. Holtby – C- Holtby hasn’t improved over last year nor has he improved as the season has gone on. His numbers remain noticeably below average. Post your own report cards!

It's too bad he's obviously slowing down this year. I had hoped he could keep going until he was 40 or something and at that point, a discussion could be open for jersey retirement, but as it is, he's a lock for the ROH I think.

Off Topic threads get longer. The US Politics thread is about 3 times the length and has been around for two fewer years. The God thread back in the day was also incredibly long and I think longer than the Virtanen thread too.

I posted a thread a few weeks ago and motivated based on that, I decided to write a short article trying to spark some positivity in these dark times. Calgary/Vancouver Evaluation - updated 3/29/21 - CAL TIED WITH VAN
-AJ- replied to Dazzle's topic in Canucks Talk
Based on how the season has gone so far, I would agree that the Flames have not "massively improved". Frankly, they've been much worse this year than last year. The Canadiens do seem notably improved this year, though I wouldn't say that's a Benning thing. The Toffoli lamenting is far overplayed by many, I think. -

I'm definitely not on the fire Benning train or even the fire Green train, but to claim we're close to Calgary and Montreal (especially Montreal) is ridiculous. We have played three more games than the Flames and five more than the Canadiens. Given the relatively low number of games, that makes a huge difference. For context: If Montreal lost the next seven games straight and we won our next two games, they would still be above us and with an equal number of games. Before: Canucks 9-15-2: 20 points - 26 games Canadiens: 10-6-5: 25 points - 21 games After: Canucks (2 game win streak): 11-15-2: 24 points - 28 games Canadiens (7 game losing streak): 10-13-5: 25 points - 28 games Calgary is a bit closer, but we can play the same game. If the Flames were to go on a 3-game losing streak from today on out and we were to win our next game, we would just be tied. Games played matters and those who ignore it are viewing our team as far better than it is. -
Bo is a borderline fringe 1st line centre. To say that the concept that he's not a top 6 forward is laughable is to be charitable.

I'm not sure Clark is really bad, per se. He brought Markstrom to stardom. I think it's more a matter of fit that ability. Not every goalie coach fits with every netminder. Demko is improving under Clark, but Holtby has remained the same as his last year in Washington--neither improved nor worsened. The Miller example is a bit perplexing, as Miller was very good in Vancouver, especially during the end of his tenure.
-
Seems to me like Clark hasn't been able to work his magic on Hotlby yet. Sitting at a very similar number to last year's save percentage. Demko has taken the starting role and I don't think Holtby will likely be anything more than a backup at this point in his career. It's odd because it sounds like the swan song for him, yet he's only 31 years old and should really still have another several years of being an NHL starter left in him, but he's fallen off pretty hard in the past two years. I'm not sure if he even gets picked by Seattle at this point. He's only likely to be a backup if they want it and given his recent numbers, he's bordering on becoming an AHL starter-calibre netminder. Below .900 isn't great, even with a bad team. I'd bet that Seattle takes a forward off our team instead of Holtby. I suppose the consolation is that Demko has improved as the season has gone on.
