Crazy. I don't dig into the super advanced stats, but even the moderately advanced stats strongly work against this. OEL blocks fewer shots than Hughes (and that's saying something), but also has a worse CORSI. Hughes does start more in the o-zone, but it's not so significant as to accommodate the difference. Hughes also has more takeaways, not to mention the literal +40 gap between them in +/-. Even on the PK, Hughes is head and shoulders above OEL, with similar usage. Hughes is a Top 15, maybe Top 10 d-man in the league right now. Currently, OEL plays like a bottom pairing defenseman. Let's just hope OEL can at least become a 3/4 again.

Agreed. I also think shooting more will be helpful. A lot of the snipers in the NHL have 1.5x to 2x his shots right now, so simply increasing his shot frequency will help.

Here's a list of the top 10 shooting percentages combined since 2017-18. Kuzmenko's rate is not sustainable long-term.

Petey is on pace for 40 goals in 81 games if he plays all the remaining games in the season, which is just one shy of the current record for most goals in a season by a Canuck centre, Ryan Kesler with 41 goals in 2010-11.

[PGT] Vancouver Canucks at Anaheim Ducks | Mar. 19, 2023
-AJ- replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Not sure if it's been mentioned already, but Hughes tied the Canuck record for the most assists by a defenseman (set by himself last year) at 60 assists. One more and he'll break his own record. -
This. Klimovich has had huge development already in Abbotsford at a young age. Hoglander has rebounded in a big way in Abby. Podkolzin re-found his game in Abbotsford. Silovs is developing well in Abbotsford. Even others like Bains and Nielsen have become impact players.

Great game for Martin tonight. He's gotten his game back in Abby.

In my estimation, Pettersson is not yet a Selke-level player, but in one sense, he's weirdly close to becoming one. His only huge shortcoming on that front is his abhorrent face-off percentage. He's also not amazing on the PK, but there's some evidence that his PK results could be more the results of poor linemates or goaltending. Honestly, if he simply gets his face-off percentage to 50%, I think he is a top 5 Selke player.

Gotta agree. I loved Marky and it hurt to let him go, but even at the time, I felt it was the right choice. I think we'll have similar feelings with Horvat years down the line.

[Report] Jordan Binnington suspended 2 games
-AJ- replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
What a baby. Glad he was suspended. -
In a weird occurrence, Boeser has taken 4 face-offs in the last three games and is 3 for 4. On the season, he has won 18 of 45 faceoffs for a 40% rate. Not good by any means, but better than a few centres near the bottom of the league. There are 23 RWs who have taken more than 30, but less than 120 face-offs and among them, Boeser ranks 13th, so he's not anything particularly special, but it is noteworthy that he is the only non-centre who has taken face-offs for the Canucks (though others who are listed as centres are often playing on the wing, like Joshua).

New Salary Cap. New Player Representative
-AJ- replied to Sharpshooter's topic in General Hockey Discussion
I expect it just to go up $1M next year, but to possibly explode for 2024-25, maybe to levels of $90M+. -
Fun fact--with Pettersson's 8 shorthanded points this year, he has beaten Gerry Minor's record of more than 40 years (7 shorthanded points) for shorthanded points by a Canuck centre. Minor's record was later tied by Messier, so Pettersson beating this record wipes that abominable name off the record books. Bure has the record shorthanded points in a season for all positions at nine, just one more than Petey has right now. Pettersson has also tied the record for most OT goals in a season by a centre (three), which was set by Miller just last year.
-
With his first assist tonight, Boeser set a new career high with 31 assists. Currently, his assist rate is higher than any other season in his career. Midway through the game with two assists, he's on a 45-assist pace in 82 games.
-
The rule is that you cannot be older than 26--exactly, to the day. Because Kuzmenko was already about 26.6 years old at the start of the season, he's older than the minimum of 26.0 years old at the start of the season.

Hits and Misses - Evaluating Rutherford and Allvin
-AJ- replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Canucks Talk
Pretty early to judge a lot of their decisions, but at the very least, signing Kuzmenko to this one-year deal was a hit. The next biggest positive IMO is Joshua and Aman, but both aren't huge pieces. Mikheyev is good, but does cost a fairly pricy contract. Worth it? Probably, but still not exactly a steal. The jury is still out on the whole Horvat-Hronek deal and we won't really have a solid answer for about three years given Raty's age and even Hronek's relatively young age. -
75 Year Anniversary of Larry Kwong's 1st NHL Game
-AJ- replied to HKSR's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Have to agree with this. I've only vaguely heard of him. Just the one NHL game, but still a barrier-breaker. -
The gap is only about two years, so it's not that different. Miller just turned 30 and Horvat is about to turn 28 next month. That said, I agree with the principle of not being hasty to make judgments on the deals just yet.

[Signing] Canucks re-sign Phillip Di Giuseppe
-AJ- replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Great news for Abby. -
Agree with this. I was just at a game in Abbotsford and I was stunned at how dominant Hoglander was. He looks far to good for the AHL.
-
I was at tonight's game and I gotta tell you, the Hoglander playing tonight is not the same one as a couple months ago. This guy is absolutely dominant every time he's on the ice. We've got to give him another shot in Vancouver at some point.
-
I strongly suspect they'll try this out. He's the #2 RHD Hughes has needed for a long time.
-
Nah, we still have that pick, but stronger play against weaker teams as of late will likely secure our fate outside of the top 5 picks this year.
-
To be fair, there was almost no chance the Isles pick became Bedard. Still, yes, they chose to invest in a 25 year old #2/3 RHD rather than a much younger, though less certain thing in a mid-round 1st.
