  1. His shot seems to leave a bit to be desired, but his playmaking game seems to have taken a step up. If he could start scoring like he used to and have the 20 goals, he'd be all over the news with his dominance, which would be thrilling. 20 goals right now would give him 45 points in 40 games, besting even Petey in points. Personally, I'd love to see him scoring more, but I won't complain so long as he's still producing. Assists mean goals and goals mean wins.
  2. I just realized that Markstrom's played more games as a Canuck than Cloutier, which blows my mind. Cloutier is still 30 wins ahead of him though since we were so good back then.
  3. Source? I'm skeptical of that given that Stecher grew up as a fan of the Canucks and is playing for his hometown team. Strikes me as a dream situation.
  4. Not likely as a pending UFA.
  5. I think a big part of it is how much more these players will grow. If Jake is perceived to continue growing and become a steady 50-60 point power forward, there's a case that he might be the more valuable player, but taken at their current value with no value placed on any potential future growth, I don't think there's enough extra there from Jake to make up for the big difference in offense between him and Ehlers/Nylander.
  6. Certainly big for him indeed, but not as much for our cap situation.
  7. Not yet I think. He's scored 3 points in 12 games. I do agree that he'll be getting a raise at this rate, but I don't think it's going to be huge. I'd expect it to to be maybe $1.5M (he's at 975k right now). However, if he scores at a 25-point pace or more, then we're probably looking at over $2M per year.
  8. He plays like he's 230 even though he's more average. I'm betting he's somewhere between Hansen and Virtanen, which is fine for 10th overall.
  9. Well that depends on how old he was in the 50s. Could be in his late 60s still theoretically.
  10. I noticed Gudbranson started wearing one as well. Kassian at 28 years old might be the youngest player without a visor left now. EDIT: Looked it up. He's the third youngest. O'Reilly is about 2 weeks younger and Andrew Shaw is the youngest at about 28.5 years old.
  11. I think a factor in the bust claims are also relatively unrealistic expectations at #6. As high as the pick is, you're still not really guaranteed a star at that position. A 50-60 point forward is probably about par for #6. Regardless, I don't really care about what happened 5 years ago. Just happy that he's continually improving (even if it's taken a long time).
  12. I'll give mine assuming a specific season for each player (I also ignore left/right side defense positions): D. Sedin (2010-11) - H. Sedin (2010-11) - B. Boeser (2019-20) J. Miller (2019-20) - E. Pettersson (2019-20) - A. Burrows (2010-11) T. Vanek (2017-18) - R. Kesler (2010-11) - R. Vrbata (2014-15) T. Pearson (2019-20) - B. Horvat (2019-20) - M. Samuelsson (2010-11) C. Higgins (2011-12) A. Edler (2010-11) - C. Ehrhoff (2010-11) Q. Hughes (2019-20) - D. Hamhuis (2011-12) C. Tanev (2019-20) - K. Bieksa (2011-12) S. Salo (2011-12) R. Luongo (2010-11) C. Schneider (2011-12)
  13. Why would you put Daniel at centre and Henrik on the wing
  14. I'll bite (note mine are also somewhat relative to expectations): Almost 1/2 Way ( Merry Christmas) Report card Team...…………......….B..............Not consistent enough, but still better than last year. Not the big improvement I was excited for in late October, but a more realistic scenario of on the egdge of playoff contention. Pettersson....................A.............I expected him to improve only slightly, which is pretty much what he's done. A bit above a point a game so far. Miller.............................A+..............I predicted about 55 points, so he's on pace to smash both that and his career high. Horvat...........................B+...............Pretty similar production to last year. Continues to be amazing on face-offs. Par for the course at this point. Boeser..........................A.............Despite the negative reports from some fans, he's producing at a career-high pace and if he can remain healthy, will smash both his assist and point bests. Pearson........................A.............I was hoping he could mantain a 40-50 point level and he's actually done it so far, to my excitement. Sutter............................B-............His offense is underrated, but has also recently fallen off (might have to do with injuries as well). Virtanen........................A..............On pace for his first 20-goal and 40-point season. Continues to slowly get better and better each year. Gaudette.......................A-...............Did not expect him to be so strong offensively so far. Doesn't get an A because his defense is lacking. Roussel.........................B..............Hard to give him a grade given his limited action, but he's been solid so far. Takes a few too many penalties, but he's a heart and soul guy that gets the team going. Lievo.............................A.............. Already set a career high in assists and was on pace to rival his 14 goals from last year as well. Motte.............................C+..............Can't seem to score points this year, but is a good energy guy. Beagle...........................C+.............Good leader, great faceoffs, and great defense, but his offense is getting worse as he ages. Schaller.........................C.............Definitely better than last year, but has fallen off a bit recently again. Baertschi.......................N/A...........I'm in the crowd that thinks he's still an NHL guy and don't think he's been given a fair shake. He'll get another shot somewhere else hopefully. MacEwen......................C..............Provides some energy, but isn't hugely impactful. Graovac........................C...............Good hard play and surprisingly good on the PP, but not a super complete game. Eriksson........................C-...............Solid defensive play, but brutally anemic offensive play. Ferland..........................C............Haven't seen much of him, but he leaves some to be desired for me. Edler..............................B+.............Solid and arguably still our best d-man. Makes the occasional defensive gaff, but is generally a smart player. Hughes..........................A+.............Is pushing for the "title" of our best d-man as a rookie. The best rookie defenseman we've had by a country mile. On pace to put up borderline unheard of numbers for a rookie defenseman. Tanev.............................A-...............Playing with Hughes seems to have revitalized him a bit. Better offensive year than usual. Benn..............................C...............Offense is poor and defense isn't amazing either. Myers.............................C..............Surprisingly good defense sometimes, but does make some big mistakes too. Offense is less than expected. Fantenberg....................C+............. Better than expected. Good #7 guy. Stetcher.........................C+.............Par for the course. Less exposed as a bottom pairing defenseman. Markstrom......................A-.............Great goaltending. Sometimes struggles with consistency, but overall has been an above average starter for us. Demko...........................C+............Started great, but has fallen off lately. I expect him to pick it up eventually. DiPietro..........................N/A..............8 minutes isn't enough to grade him. I'm an optimist, sue me.
  15. I can't speak for everyone, but I know I recall many including myself feeling the price we paid for Gudbranson was a bit steep. Obviously, it got even worse when he wasn't what he hoped he would be.
  16. I think a common trap I've fallen into in the past is evaluating the play of 3rd pairing defensemen outside of the context of their competition. I've seen many defenders look good in sheltered 3rd pairing minutes, but then struggle much more with top 4 minutes. Both Stecher and Hutton come to mind. It's worth keeping in mind Tanev plays against the McDavids, Eichels, and Ovechkins of the league whereas Fantenberg is shutting down the 3rd and 4th lines most often.
  17. None of those three players played full seasons in their first years. Tanev played 29 games with 13:47 ATOI. Edler played 22 games with 11:27 ATOI. Bieksa played 39 games.with 16:06 ATOI. You seem to be suggesting our young kids can just fall straight into the lineup and replace Edler and Tanev, right now, who are averaging 23:38 and 19:50 per game, respectively and both against the top players in the league. Sure, maybe a young kid can get 30 games with 13 minutes a game, but don't kid yourself thinking every young defenseman is a Quinn Hughes-calibre defenseman who can play 20 minutes right away.
  18. And since Edler injured himself too much as a young guy. His shot was as hard as Salo's, though less accurate. It's not the same anymore though. It's also worth noting that slapstots from the point historically are very low percentage shots. Good for creating chances though, but then, so are wrist shots from the point, which Edler uses more often now.
  19. It's incredible how clean Hughes' slapshot is given his small frame. All about the technique, as Petey can attest to.
  20. Went home from work early! Feels weird to be home by 4pm.

  21. Updated (12/23/19): Defensemen: Career Points (Alex Edler - 383 points) Career Games (Alex Edler - 841 games) Career Goals (Alex Edler - 98 goals) Career Point Play Points (Alex Edler - 176 PPP) Other notes: - Edler (46 PPG) is 2 powerplay goals from surpassing Salo as the all-time leader in PPGs, who has 48. - Edler is 5 assists behind Dennis Kearns for the all-time assist record. Kearns is at 290 assists. - Edler is 2 goals from becoming the first Canuck defenseman to score 100 goals with the team. - I don't track this record, but Hughes' 14 PP Points are 4th among rookie Canuck defenders. Kearns set the record in 1971-72 with 17. - As of right now (prior to tonight's game vs the Oilers), Hughes has 0.72 points-per-game, which is exactly what Dale Tallon had when he set the Canucks rookie defensemen records in 1970-71. Back then, they only played 78 games in a season though, so Hughes has four extra games to work with.
