  1. Benning clearly likes what Gaudette brings to the table and I think he hopes that Gaudette makes the team, but I hope we judge him on how he actually is, not what we hope him to be. We've made that mistake with McCann and Virtanen in the past, so it's best to play carefully here.
  2. Better than Dr. Recchi I bet.

    Jay Beagle | #83 | C

It's these kinds of players that prevent you from becoming Edmonton 2.0.

    Brendan Gaunce | C/LW

These off-season moves put Gaunce in a very very difficult spot. His defense is too good to be in the AHL, but his offense is holding him back right now. I think he'll be in tough to hold down a regular spot unless he surprises with a lot of offense compared to previous years.
  5. Reminds me of a certain #37.
  6. This is by far my favourite deal from today. Jimbo did well on this one for sure.

    Jay Beagle | #83 | C

I think this deal has a higher chance of being a good one than the Roussel one. Both guys look like gems, but both look pricy for now. I can see Beagle evolving into a Manny or Ryan Johnson kind of guy. This is also very foreboding for Gaunce. He has almost no hope of making the team now unless he explodes offensively or something.
  8. Am I the only one who thinks of Roussel as a former Canuck? I remember him nearly making our team on a tryout or something like that way back at the beginning of his career.
  9. When does free agency open tomorrow? Is it 12pm noon PST?

  10. Goldobin performed very well at the end of last season, but time is really running out for him. With a load of prospects (most notably Pettersson) coming up soon, he needs to prove he's a top six guy over a full season soon or he'll lose his job.
  11. I really hope we re-up Baertschi. With the loss of the twins, our offense is very weak and he helps it keep up a bit. While there are guys who could potentially take Baer's spot on the top line, it's risky to count on Leipsic or Pettersson when neither are particularly proven at the NHL level. Even if one of those kids can take up 1st line minutes and produce well, Baer would be great to have as a second line winger. Baertschi has a fair bit of leverage in this contract negotiation IMO, since we need the offense he provides, unless we can get it via the FA market from someone else for less.
  12. I would generally agree. When Archie first began playing, he was far more valuable than Gagner, but he slowed down as time went on and Gagner just continued being his old self. Archibald had a solid 9 points in 27 games, but only 4 of those came in the last 15 games. Gagner scored 7 points in the last 15 games, so nearly twice the rate, though he was playing with the twins to end the year. I could easily see Archie being more valuable, but at this point, I consider them fairly equal in value. Archibald's value may be slightly inflated to us due to our general lack of size though.
  13. Internet died for like 2 hours due to a thunderstorm (presumably). A interesting middle point of not having power and normal life.

  14. He will be given a chance, but he's far from proven himself at the NHL level yet. He's competed at college, but even the AHL would be a significant step up from college. I think he has a shot, but he's sitting on the outside looking in until he proves himself.
  15. I'm looking for Gaudette and McEwen to have great years in Utica. I think Palmu starts out pretty strong, but is used as a 3rd line energy forward. I'm guessing that Juolevi will start slow, but end stronger.
  16. The degree to which Baertschi is underrated is crazy. Leipsic has had his moments, but I'm not certain he's proven enough to have a spot over Baertschi right now.
  17. Demko is still pretty underrated I guess. I'm going with certainty here a bit. My list: 1) Elias Pettersson 2) Thatcher Demko 3) Quinn Hughes 4) Olli Juolevi 5) Adam Gaudette 6) Jonathan Dahlen 7) Kole Lind 8) Michael Dipietro 9) Jett Woo 10) Lukas Jasek
  18. This kid is a big steal in the second round.
  19. Never thought I'd be heavier than a nearly pro hockey player, but here we are.
  20. A bit concerned about his size, but I trust in Jim. If this kid can move the puck like Jim says he can, he could be a very exciting defenseman for us in the coming years. Good pick, Jimbo.
  21. It's crazy to think of the diversity in this year's draft. I can think of 10 players that I'd be fine with Jim drafting. He'd have to do a lot to disappoint me here. I look forward to seeing what the scouting team and Benning decide on.

    2. Brad Marchand

      Brad Marchand

I mentioned before that I had a dream where the Canucks selected a random Korean league player with their first round pick, so as long as they don't do that, I'll be fine.

    3. King Heffy

      King Heffy

The only guys I'd rather not take are Hughes and Boqvist, but I'll trust Benning's judgement regardless.  We'll have a lot of people moaning about the pick tomorrow no matter what.

      Joe,

don't count yourself short on your drafting ability,

as most Canuck fans can attest to ,we have been very weak in that department.

Now we have Mr Benning ,so it seems to be much better over the last few years,

and of course if we ever go the right way at that stupid "LOTTO DRAFT" and a bit of luck(our first ever 1OA PICK in almost fifty years) we could be a contender much sooner than expected.

  22. I'm seeing a very large shift in a lot of draft rankings recently. A lot of people are placing Boqvist well outside of the top 5 and Kotkaniemi is surpassing Wahlstrom according to some people. Very interesting. I really have no idea what to expect outside of the top 2 this Friday.

Maybe due to Kotkaniemi and Dobson have played in big tourneys as of recent, and had very decent results, its a recency effect?

    3. goalie13

      goalie13

It always surprises me when rankings shift while there is no hockey being played.

  23. I heard they were adding historical teams, but I don't see anything about that here. The additional legends are an exciting idea for me as a hockey history fan. I probably won't ever play this though, as I don't own a modern console anymore.
  24. If he can continue to be an AHL all-star, I wouldn't mind keeping him around for a while until he drops off.
  25. This is an interesting point I haven't considered until you brought it up. We all talk about how bad a coach WD was for guys like Virtanen, but how about Granlund? He clearly thrived in WD's system and has died out in Green's system.
