    Brendan Gaunce | C/LW

The more I look at it, the more it seems Gaunce had an amazing season, even if shortened a lot by injuries. I didn't realize it until now, but Gaunce had somewhat of an offensive "explosion" this year. Just take a look at these statistics: In addition to setting a career high in goals and points, he did it in 20 less games than his 5 points last year, meaning a 77% increase in points-per-game production. Also, keep in mind, all of that was while starting a paltry 14.9% of his face-offs in the offensive zone. Additionally, despite that low start percentage, his +/- was at 0; better than last year even though last year had a 42.2% offensive zone start rate. I'd be genuinely curious to see what his Corsi would be if he was back up to last year's zone start rate.
  2. Gotta say I agree somewhat. He started real strong, but became exceedingly average as the time went on. Maybe a bit too complacent.
  3. From what I've heard, they will be re-signing all RFAs this summer if they can.
  4. Goldobin did what I didn't think he could do in the last 10 games of the season--make me want him on the main roster. Very good ending to his season. I hope to see him in the top six next year, barring any surprises.
  5. Very good to hear. Must feel great to get that kind of praise from Hank.
  6. Yeah, He finished with a higher save percentage than last year. Still not great, but an improvement while also doubling his usual number of games played is a good sign. If he improves at all next year (along with some good defense maybe), he'll actually make Demko work for his full-time job.
  7. He reminds me of Hansen too, but let's not forget (as another poster reminded me) that Hansen was also an elite shutdown man. If Jake adds that to his game, we have an elite middle six forward on our hands.

    Brendan Gaunce | C/LW

I both agree and disagree with this. I disagree that Gaunce didn't put up a lot of points in the AHL. As some have pointed out, Gaunce had 38 points in 46 games with Utica before being called up to the NHL in 2015-16. For comparison, Shinkaruk had 39 points in 45 games in the same season. Gaunce was probably the second best offensive player in Utica during that season. Since that season, he's gone back down to Utica twice for brief stints and has found his touch both times, scoring 4 goals in 9 games in those games. He's an offensive player in the AHL, but hasn't transitioned that to the NHL. Whether or not he'd even be able given the opportunity is another question altogether. I would agree that Gaunce will probably never be given a great shot at an offensive role. I think Green sees him as a defensive specialist and loves him in that role. I'd be surprised if he ever gets any sort of extended offensive role and suspect he'll never break out beyond 20-30 points in a year.

    Brendan Gaunce | C/LW

It seems to me that the way Gaunce plays defense really doesn't show up much at all on the stat sheet. It's largely just positional play and calmness with the puck. He rarely makes mistakes, but also rarely makes breath-taking plays. At this point, he's looking like a Brandon Sutter lite, except that Gaunce hits more and harder than Sutter.
  10. Final Update for the end of the 2017-18 season. This will have a lot fewer updates with the twins gone next year. Only Edler will continue to set new records unless we have a superstar rookie *cough* Pettersson *cough*. All Skaters and Forwards: Career Games (Henrik - 1330 Games) Career Goals (Daniel - 393 Goals) Career Assists (Henrik - 830 Assists) Career Points (Henrik - 1070 Points) Career Powerplay Goals (Daniel Sedin - 138 PPG) Career Powerplay Points (Henrik Sedin - 369 PPP) Defensemen: Career Points (Alex Edler - 334 Points) Career Powerplay Points (Alex Edler - 153 PPP)
  11. 831 assists is insane. That number doesn't get enough credit.
  12. I like him most in this last game. He does look like he's got some nice hands and a smart head on his shoulders to feel the game well.
  13. I feel like I've heard that he can't, but I'm not 100% sure.
  14. And so many knuckleheads lost their brains after he was extended.
  15. I would hope that Jake can get about 25-30 points next year. That's enough to satisfy me along with his current level of play. Gradual improvements are all I need.
  16. Gaudette wins the Hobey Baker! I'm pretty pumped to see what this kid can do at the top level next year.

Getting a good taste of the NHL now. Not a liability which is good to see. It will let him know what to expect for next season and how to get ready for it

Really like how smart he plays; he’s always on pucks.  I would like to see him be physically stronger though.  I’m sure he knows that’s where he needs to improve.  He seems the hyper compete type, that will put in the off ice work too.

  17. I figured this would be a 15 minutes announcement sort of thing, but apparently, it's an entire show.
  18. True true. For some reason I was only thinking of those guys offensively and in their aggressive play style. Leipsic is basically them, but currently without the defense.
  19. I see him probably best as a third line guy, like Burrows and Hansen. That said, both guys showed the ability to play top 6 minutes if needed and I think I could see Leipsic in a similar vein.
  20. He looks excited, but maybe a bit too excited. Seems a bit scrambly for my liking, but he does have his moments where he's doing the right thing. Still a work in progress, but it's exciting.

A mixed bag. Some scrambly moments but a few bright moments.
  22. I really dislike it when people put Matthews in the same league as McDavid. Matthews is a superstar forward. McDavid is a generational talent. Stop acting like they're on the same level.

I agree it's because he's a Leaf, but he was a 1st overall. The Leaf fanbase is trying to convince themselves that they also have their own "McDavid". Makes them feel special.

Media driven to some degree - the number of articles Sportsnet/TSN that poke at that issue and imply that Matthews may even be more "rounded" and such is part of the issue.

Well AJ you must hate me then because I consider Matthews better than McDavid.  Better defensively, better shot, makes his team better and also a tad bit cheaper.  McDavid turned it up stat wise when he knew his team was out, all these points are garbage points.  I think people are too enamoured with his blazing speed, Matthews looks like a complete player.  Now 5 years from now McDavid could learn to backcheck and when that happens no doubt he'll be the best player in the league.

I bet both are counting the days to free agency though.

  23. I wouldn't be opposed to giving Stech top 4 minutes ahead of Guddy unless he steps it up.
  24. A few weeks ago, I think I said something like $1.5-1.75M for two years, but given his recent strong play, I could see a $2M deal. Anything over $2.5M and it's a pretty hefty over-payment IMO.
