I am not a fan of trading Horvat, but I do really love Ostapchuk. I watched him in the playoffs and he actually reminded me a bit of Horvat.

[Report] Sharks name Mike Grier as GM
-AJ- replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
Pretty neat. He has experience with the Sharks too. We'll see how well he can do with a difficult situation in San Jose. -
Pretty sure the Sedins were far better skaters at 30 than at 25.

[Rumour] Brad Hunt, Nic Petan to test free agency
-AJ- replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Hunt was a pretty solid offensive 7th d-man, but wasn't particularly great defensively. By all accords, loved in the locker room though. Losing Petan will hurt Abby, but we've had a few other signings that will probably help fill the gap. -
Proposal: blockbuster with Columbus
-AJ- replied to Hogs & Podz's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Don't think Columbus does this deal, I think. I suspect they are a bit more future oriented and not as interested in Myers and Miller, both of whom are probably already in their primes. -
A lot. I thought Hodgson was the next Linden. Ronalds Kenins the next Hansen. I was a bit hesitant about the Loui deal, but figured we'd get at least 50-60 points for a couple years before his decline. I did not like the Boeser nor the Pettersson draft picks and wanted Jeremy Roy instead of Boeser and Gabe Vilardi instead of Pettersson. I also didn't think Hughes was the best pick at #7. In short, I'm fallible.

He did play for Canada in the 1994 and 2002 Olympics, so I suspect he wouldn't have been allowed to play for both Canada and Japan in varying Olympics. Still, you're probably right in that it could have an effect on the growth of the sport there.

Yeah, culture makes a big difference to be sure. Not only do we start 'em young, but they have a high level of competition to face off against to improve quickly.

Love to see hockey growing in new markets.

[Signing] Canucks re-sign Brock Boeser
-AJ- replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Honestly, we're paying based on the assumption that he returns to form here. 2021-22 Boeser was not worth $6.65, but 2020-21 Boeser definitely was. 2021-22 Boeser was on pace for 53 points, but 2020-21 Boeser was on pace for 72 points. All that said, Boeser is my favourite Canuck off the ice, so I'm pretty happy about this. -
The one-way for Rathbone probably indicates that the team is hoping he can be an NHL guy soon. I really do hope his all around game is polished enough to play a bottom pairing role now. Also glad that Juulsen and Lockwood are back, as both are NHL depth and huge pieces of Abby when not in Vancouver.

[REPORT] Russian NHL prospect arrested for "draft evasion"
-AJ- replied to CRAZY_4_NAZZY's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Gross. Has to be worrying for other KHL prospects. If anyone wants to play in the NHL, they wouldn't sign with CSKA now. -
Quick sign him before he's gobbled up instantly!

[Signing] Sabres re-sign Craig Anderson
-AJ- replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Heck of a long career at this point. He'll turn 42 by next May. -
[Rumour] DiPietro on the Block, Montreal has Enquired
-AJ- replied to Warhippy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Agreed. I think a 3rd is probably still reasonable value at this point. -
[Rumour] DiPietro on the Block, Montreal has Enquired
-AJ- replied to Warhippy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
We could spare it with the rise of Martin, but I do feel like we need another goaltender prospect coming up in the pipeline soon. Who else do we have that's developing? We have Silovs, but I'm not sure he's likely to make the NHL at any point. -
[Signing] Kings re-sign Kevin Fiala
-AJ- replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Big money, but I have a feeling Fiala will earn it. -
Fiala is real good. Was really impressed with him in the 2020 playoff qualifiers. I'm guessing the Wild knew they wouldn't get a deal that worked for both sides, so they traded him away as an RFA. Looks like a fairly even deal. Fiala is as good as a pretty high-end 1st rounder and Faber is still pretty young and not a certain thing yet.
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but a 35+ bonus deal can only be a one-year deal, correct? Any longer than that and I think it's not eligible for performance bonuses, so we would have to sign him to a one-year deal. I'm not against it if it was reasonable and pretty heavy on bonuses to hedge against injuries and poor play, etc. All that said, it would be as a stop gap for missing a guy like Miller though, not any sort of long term solution.

I actually felt like Demko's scorpion save was better.
-
I do have the feeling that burying him in Abbotsford would be a poor idea unless he's somehow even worse than last year.
-
Not sure on the exact number, but I think about $1.2M is the maximum that can be buried in the minors, so that much would be saved and the rest would be dead cap. We'd also have to replace him with someone else too, so there's that to factor in too.
-
He's pretty old, but honestly, still very good. I personally think he can still be a #1 defenseman in the NHL, but at 37 years old, I'm betting that changes pretty darn soon.
